  2. Do prop-movers on the field count towards the 165-member limit? And I wonder what the tuition is for a prop-mover? After all, the prop caption head, assistant prop caption head, and prop movement techs need to get paid as well.

  4. Boston is back into hats again for 2023 as well. I hope this trend gains traction. I just think Headwear "finishes the look" of any corps.

  5. https://fb.watch/kXERd7dhJB/?mibextid=Nif5oz The Crossmen are proud to present their 2023 production titled “Meetings at the Edge” a captivating show concept that revolves around thought-provoking and transformative encounters. "Meetings at the Edge'' will take us on a journey to explore the physical and emotional “edge”, a phenomena that exists between individuals and groups, places and things. We travel to the edge, challenge the edge and push beyond the edge on the winding road that leads to your door. “We are excited for this show as each production allows us to present and explore different musical and visual concepts of the “Edge” that will connect with audiences on a personal and emotional level” said Program Director Ed Devlin. “At any point, the concept allows the edge to be various parts of the field and forms, shapes and graphics.” Meetings at the Edge musical selections includes: The Long and Winding Road – The Beatles Meetings Along the Edge – Philip Glass, Ravi Shankar Letter From Home – Pat Metheny The Windup – Keith Jarrett The Yellow Jacket – Shaun Martin “You can expect THE Crossmen sound on the field this summer,” said Brass Arranger Drew Shanfield. “Growing up in Pennsylvania, I have vivid memories of the Crossmen sound— a unique blend of groove, melody, power, and heart fused with a little bit of fear, aggression and the exhilaration of being on the edge. We have put all of that together to meet you at the edge in 2023 and are excited to connect and entertain audiences on tour.” The Crossmen’s 49th summer is underway at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma. The performers and staff can’t wait to have you on the edge of your seat as they travel the long and winding road across the country for over 20 performances. We look forward to meeting you at the edge!

  6. That was an illuminating read…thanks! Prima facie, I’d think it might appeal to some young adults of a certain age. But if they snag another Founders Trophy in ‘23, I’d be lookin’ for my ring.

  7. No, prop crew members are their own thing. Also, Kevin Shah posted a percussion chunk: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CtCuxO8ApBa/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

  9. Paying folks to do the manual labor of prop movement could cause issues in venues where there are Union theater-types. Unless the Corps hires Union prop-movers.

  12. I can see that as an argument for not having props. But if you're going to do it, do it right. A non-member crew can allow the members to focus on the show, help avoid injuries (both by members only moving the props in the show and having people more familiar with the props maintain them), you have extra hands to help in other areas, etc. I'm fine without props, but if you decide to take on the extravagance of props, you should do it right and safely.

  19. Haven't been to a show recently it seems. No age limits on the field prior to the beginning of a show. Overage volunteers help set up "stuff" and most synth operators are over 22.

  20. There’s a Reddit thread and one of the prop guys from last year explains it from his perspective. He comments a ways down explaining how it worked last season.

  23. It also doesn't help when show organizers on the Jr side treat the Srs like we have the plague. It doesn't matter if your Sr corps has members with multiple DCI rings...once you enter that world, you're a has-been. Bloody hell...at SoCal Dream's first show in 2006, they didn't even read off our score until AFTER the Jr scores were read, and only THEN, not until after I'd called out loudly and repeatedly for our score to be read -- finally had to go directly to the GE box and demand it from the announcer....anyone who was there probably remembers it, and I am NOT apologetic about it in the least. For &$#@'s sake, we were there! We did the show! We had people in the stands! I got it when Nightfire 96 didn't get one...we were in exhibition only and weren't going to get a score in the first place. But a corps in it's 4th year -- it's third in scored competition -- should not have to DEMAND their score be read...NO corps should have to do that, even if they WERE the only unit in their division that night. I never got called on the carpet for it by the staff...they might've felt the same way, but stepped back while me and my mouth let loose/ Of course....i ALSO won the pool that night re our score!

  24. This forum is full of surprises. In an activity that still calls itself "drum and bugle corps", the word we really need to avoid using is "senior" because THAT will evoke derogatory misconceptions that can never be dispelled?

  25. Troopers held all but one of their Winter Camps except one in Indianapolis area and they are holding spring training for 32 days in Tipton IN. They have the second shortest drive to Rockford MI after Cavaliers.

  26. I joined 1974 and first time I heard “that ain’t Drum Corps” was 1975. That was due to those “tink tink” bells. Then again had someone on FB say I never marched in a “real” drum corps because we didn’t have start and finish line. 🤦‍♂️

  27. It's more unified and easier to identify the corps. I obviously understand it in WGI, but DCI needs to be different... in a sense. My buddies always used football as an example. Imagine the Texas Longhorns wearing a uniform that wasn't burnt orange or white, but it was silver and gold. The longhorn symbol is not on the helmet and thr color of the helmet is purple. Who are they? I'm not trying to bash WGI or anything like that, but in drum corps it makes sense for things to be a bit more unified. It's just a better way to identify the corps.

  28. I only know about today's DCA from what I read on here. I never had those misconceptions after learning more about it, but I can see where they still exist. I probably was the same way before DCP. Just never bothered to learn about it. Must the crowds that still think introducing bells and xylophones in 1974 made drum corps go all to hell.

  29. Depending how many props have to be moved and how many times they need to be moved during rehearsals and shows, it would be tough having a fulltime crew. Even having part time volunteers would be even harder. More meals, sleeping locations, transportation, if needed, to and from the corps current location, how in shape are these volunteers? The logistics/expenses might never make this worth it. Watch some DCI shows in recent years where you see the props being moved on to the field and you'll get an idea of how many people would be needed. With many props designed to be moved easily during the show by mm, let them move them.

  30. Lol Brian played 2nd Bari when I was there. Couple of years I played 2nd Bari and marched next to him at parades. Let’s just say he would notice when I played the wrong note. 🥵 As for tune, balance and blend. Worked on that in the 70s with competing Westshoremen. That got taken to a higher level with non competing Hanover.

  35. i was a regular at the alumni show from inception til 11. and then....i lost interest. some of it was seeing/hearing a lot of the same stuff every year. some of it was some corps trying to branch out yet killing their identity or being vanity projects for certain arrangers. i still love alumni corps....if i am at a show and one is there. i watch and cheer. but often time...and mini corps too....some of the away from the stage/field drama got old, and there was some entitlement from some as if THEY were the show that weekend. they weren't...the DCA competing corps were.

  40. I HAVE been to Castleton and seen (and touched) the props. There are 12 pieces, all light weight aluminum, on rubber tires and are very easy to move, any they apparently don't all connect until late in the show.

  45. Well I said at the end of last season that DCI needed to absorb DCA so DCA can live. If I remember correctly people said DCA was struggling financially and most DCA groups already do DCI shows. While people only care about local think about all the other groups that don't compete because they aren't going to a non central location. Who drives farther than MBI and Govies? Now you have an option for every group to drive similar distances and possibly start groups in areas that are hot with marching bands. This would be the first time I'd even think of watching DCA now.

  46. The rep has the “SHOWSTOPPER” kind of quality and variety that I think will result in this one being more of a crowd fav than say past year’s shows, not that BD hasn’t had some iconic pop-culture kind of material before in their shows, they really are making sure many folks get on board from the very beginning of their show, this summer is gonna be a crazy one👀 fantastic opening material, lovely ballad selection, and it doesn’t look like they’re going to lose any steam and momentum with what they have to finish out the show😮 still a little bit of original works left to be heard, along with other corps(Boston with quite a bit of original works) so it’s safe to say the full product isn’t yet known for some!
