  1. How "wild" the wild days were gets exaggerated as time goes on. Some of the wild escapade and drug stories sound like Cheech and Chong wearing shakos but in truth, they probably wouldn't have competed at that level with quality if they were high all the time, especially in the tic days. Regarding the quality of the horn lines, don't judge by some of the recordings available. I'll watch some of the early PBS DVD's and think "That's not how they sounded" and it turns out I may be correct. I know someone who was with WGBH in Boston at the time they broadcast finals live and he has said they never quite mastered the positioning of the recording microphones for the broadcasts, especially when corps played to the backfield or marching members were not in the middle on the 50 Yard line. As far as the Fleetwood recordings, they can recapture the moment emotionally but the quality on some is terrible.

  2. When I was at the San Antonio Regional, some corps kids who had performed earlier in the day were sitting in the row ahead of me. Let's just say I smelled them before they even sat down. Good Lord.

  3. Why do I see a dozen tubas, yet all I hear is that low droning sound from the speakers? (Aside- 12 seems to be the number we've settled on. Most corps now write for 12. Not long ago, several had 16. I think Scouts had 20 one season. Back to the topic at hand...)
