  1. Looking at some old photo's of Upstate New York drum corps and found one with 'Avante Garde' from Saratoga, New York playing matched grip !
  2. I think those were the same ones ! It could have been spring of '88 when I made these for Star. Oh yeah...they were heavy ! They consisted of a 1/4" thick fiberglass shell with my North style lug, and I used a simple Japanese style throw-off and buttplate with a set of standard 20 strand snares that were cut down to accomodate the 10" diameter. They may have taken the strainer and bottom hoop off to cut down a little on the weight and taped the snares to the underside of the batter, but this is how I made them originally. I don't think they made a 10" bottom head yet, but if I remember correctly...we used a diplomat.
  3. I just hate to steal REMO's thunder and I'm sure it's a very cool effect, but just have a listen to Star in 1989...I made the 10" tenor gok-snares that they used ! Rick Rogers, Jr.
  4. Got another one for you: 1986 Rochester Crusaders We decided on matched grip this year because we had a couple of snare players that could play their stones off matched, but looked pretty nasty with traditional. I can't recall, but I believe we were top 4 in percussion !
  5. Yeah...Robbie Robinson was in Crossmen ! Rob Carson was always a West Coaster. Robinson played extremely well, and I believe he won a DCI individuals on snare in the early 80's.
  6. Brian Callahan did Guardsmen (I believe) in 1981, and I know he did Troopers not too long after that ! They most likely played matched grip if he was there at that time.
  7. Yep...you betcha ! 53 and healthier than most 20 year olds...the martial arts thing, ya know ! Love ya Tom !! ...see you in Rochester, and best of luck with Brigs this weekend !
  8. I believe DCA only double panel the visual and music effect at the end of the year !
  9. Crusaders actually have a very good program, but I'm sure it wasn't performed as well as I know they can perform it ! Buy a ticket for Rochester next weekend and wear your corps jacket proudly !
  10. Just a question...didn't J-bars push the drums 'out and away' from the player so drill movement was easier ? Looks to me like this design is moving the drums closer to the body (again), and it appears that the bar would be in the way for movement on the tenor and snare carriers. Obviously, we're not seeing the whole drum connection to the carrier, but this is what I see !
  11. Yeah....I've seen that THERMAL GALLON coffee mug he uses....WOW !!
  12. Never thought of that one ! I play volleyball with officers in corrections and probation. I'll ask them after the game...over beer and wings !
