  1. I predicted cutting down brass significantly and micing it up was going to happen within the next decade as a cost cutting measure even before the debacles with SCV and The Cadets.
  2. I don't bump often, but I feel like I need to for this. I've listened to the "Shall We Gather at the River" arrangement that tedrick posted a lot over the past few days, and that last 30 seconds is just brilliant arranging. The whole thing is magical, but that add 2 chord at the end is pure bliss.
  3. Unreal. People who have followed this thread should really give this one a spin. Wow.
  4. Member safety needs to get a lot better. Victims have myriad reasons not to go directly to law enforcement after being abused. Law enforcement does not always act aggressively to bring justice to victims, though movements like Me Too and decades of activism before that have made it better. But it still needs to get a lot better. As it does, you'll see an increase in victims going to law enforcement more quickly. Any conversation begins there. Anything else is people reframing their victim blaming.
  5. When I use "standard procedure", it's not official terminology for public school teachers or anything. I use terms like that without even thinking of it because of my military background probably. For me, it's just common sense to protect myself in case a kid were to lie which can and does happen. Most of us do treat it as a mandate, and I'd be fine if it actually became one for us. How on earth any corps wouldn't address this by now is beyond me. It's becoming clear to me that a lawsuit like the one that's happening with SOA is the only thing that might change old habits in this activity.
  6. That's it really. It's not a requirement or anything, but it's definitely a common courtesy in my profession to help out a teacher next door or whatever if they ask you to be present while they talk with an individual student about something. It's not necessary very often, but it is a standard procedure for me.
  7. Are you talking about permanent dedicated staff from outside of any individual corps' own hiring who would be 100% focused on member safety? Would the DCI front office set that up and pay for it (rhetorical question)? Anything else is just corps policing themselves which is the real underlying problem, IMO. But yeah, I would always want another staff member with me when I meet with a student about something important. And on a side note, I never meet with any student one on one behind closed doors. Why would anybody who supervises youth take that risk no matter how mundane they think an issue might be?
  8. I don't think anybody would question the effort of SCV's marching members no matter where they perform in a lineup. And young people thrive on routine no matter what the routine is. But I think most people running corps would agree that it can be advantageous to go on the evening both competitively and logistically. I'll be paying more attention to scores than I have in years to see how that all goes. Really kind of fascinating to me to see how this goes if it goes.
  9. To determine if always going on first is a "big deal", take SCV out of it. What objections would any WC corps have to it?
  10. I know next to nothing about percussion, but I'll always focus on the percussion whenever I hear Star 93 or SCV 97. So many more, but those were the first 2 that came to my mind.
  11. yeah, i just watched the 86 Lancers show. mindblowingly musical especially in all of the slower/softer pieces.
  12. corps have specifically said they don't come up to my neck of the woods much (WA) due to low souvie sales in part.
  13. Tiny incremental changes are the sad reality of how the behavior of large groups changes. Agonizingly slow. There are still people who don't have much empathy and automatically blame victims for not immediately reporting it to authorities, but that sentiment is less prevalent now than 5 years ago. People at least consider why that didn't necessarily work in the past and how we can take steps to make it work better in the future.
  14. Crown did some of Barber's 2nd Essay back in 2002, but I'd love to hear a corps tackle it again. The scherzo section. I think "smurfs" every time I hear it so there's a show concept for you lol: The finale. Extremely rubato so hard to make work, but the brass writing and chord progressions are pretty stunnin
  15. Blue Stars brass has been a highlight of the entire DCI competitive year the past several seasons for me.
  16. 3-4 posters destroy every SCV thread. It's the ones who make everything about themselves, and it transcends labels like "hater" and "defender/apologist". It's like clockwork and accelerates when they're all on around the same time and it's self-feeding. Gets really old. I put them on ignore and ignore any posts by people who quote them. I know some on here are adverse to using block, but it works really well for me, and not just with this particular topic. I'm interested in answers to basic questions like does SCV even qualify as a nonprofit right now, and if not, is there any type of oversite or timeline or anything like that? Will the DCI board address this publicly after they meet? If it's a process that's going to take awhile, will SCV let paying auditionees know this? If I were of auditioning age and looking for a corps or my kid was, I'd want to know this stuff before ever even considering an audition or camp. How/why is there any ambiguity with this
  17. "As we look forward to the future, we do so with a spirit of honesty, transparency, and a deep commitment to learning from our past." "honesty" and "transparency" are nouns as used in the sentence. nouns don't have a tense in English.
  18. the antecedents of SCV's shut down aren't the same as other corps' looking forward to hearing more relevant details about the extent of oversite from dci because the comparisons to other corps that went through trouble recently will be impossible to avoid.
  19. i've probably watched star to star about 203950981724710 times now. almost every individual marcher has a unique route for all of those rapid-fire sets. just focusing on one marcher is like watching it new all over again. i miss drill like that so much.
  20. Sill waiting for the day that a corps does "Strobe" by Deadmau5. If the Canadian Brass arranged it and played it I think a corps can make it work.
  21. associated degrees are usually AA, AS, or AAS. I had to look it up, and an AD from Carnegie Mellon is "A full-tuition-scholarship advanced study program for highly gifted young professionals preparing for exceptional careers." So a full ride for an artistic prodigy is what I'm reading from it. Must be nice.
  22. Scott Boerma is a gift. I feel like this year's show was fantastic musically and will get some people wanting to go there to be a part of that. Didn't get nearly the attention it deserved musically, IMO. Can't wait to see where they go with the new vis team. I feel like they can up the difficulty by 50% or more.
