  1. Ahh...the Teem's garage...fond memories! I doubt any other corps has access to such a great after-rehearsal relaxation spot! With the larger membership in the corps this year we may have to have a drawing for those coveted spots in the garage lounge and by the pool! b**bs
  2. CorpsVets 2006 Scholarships Announcement CorpsVets Drum and Bugle Corps would like to announce its scholarships for 2006. Out of remembrance of friends lost and appreciation for our community, CorpsVets offers several different scholarships each year to help performers in different venues. The Jason Lowe Scholarship honors the memory of Jason Lowe, a young CV member and drum corps enthusiast who passed from cancer in the summer of 2001. Jason’s brave spirit and enthusiasm for this activity touched many. To honor Jason’s memory, a scholarship of $250 to offset the expense of member dues is offered to marching members of any corps. Interested performers may submit an essay describing why they should be considered to board@corpsvets.org by March 25, 2006. In 2005 the Jason Lowe scholarship was awarded to Timothy Byars of The Seattle Cascades. CorpsVets has enjoyed friendship with Spirit of JSU since our inception. The Lisa Abney scholarship honors both this inner-corps relationship and the memory of Lisa Abney. This $250 scholarship is open to members of Spirit of JSU to help offset their member dues. Interested performers may submit an essay describing why they should be considered to board@corpsvets.org by March 25, 2006. In 2005 the Lisa Abney scholarship was awarded to Joseph Allen. Rockmart High School in Rockmart, GA has been a gracious host to CorpsVets for several years, allowing us generous use of their facilities for rehearsals and the 2003 and 2004 and 2005 DCA South shows. As a token of our appreciation, the $200 Rockmart scholarship is offered to a Rockmart H.S. band senior to help alleviate the costs of college. The CorpsVets Board of Directors will award the scholarship based on the recommendation of Band Director Greg Teems. CorpsVets also awards member scholarships to needy CV members to alleviate the cost of member dues. Awards are made based on need and there is no set amount of awards or limit to the number of awards. Interested members of CorpsVets may submit an essay describing why they should be considered to board@corpsvets.org by March 25, 2006 Atlanta CorpsVets, an all-age drum corps and perennial DCA finalist, is in its 9th year of existence and is the only Open Class drum corps in Georgia. CorpsVets’ 2006 competitive show is a Trip to Vegas, featuring “Luck Be a Lady”, “Feeling Good”, “Copacabana” and other favorites sure to thrill fans! Although there are still some spots available, they are going fast! The next camp is February 4th and 5th at Rockmart H.S. For more information, go to www.corpsvets.org.
  3. So I know CV hasn't seen any other DCA South corps in competition so far...will Saturday be the first time any of DCA South has competeted against each other this year? I was getting excited about DCA Rocks the South as I was doing research on an article about what DCA South corps are playing this year (read article here:CorpsVets Home Page) Looks like there are some really great DCA South corps' shows this year! b**bs
  4. It must be the blonde in my summer highlights, but I'm confused. Are you saying that they catch every toss on an and count? I've always been taught that a 2 is 3 counts, a 3 is 3 1/2 counts, a 4 is 4 counts a 5 is caught on 4 and, etc. Of course thats when you're doing technique warm-ups. To match choreography I've taken liberty with the count structure. So are you saying that they take an extra half count to catch a toss? Isn't that just fudging with the counts or as a group tossing it a little higher and compensating with the spin to keep the same number of revolutions? Why would this make it cleaner? I will buy more visual if its higher, but a clean toss starts from the prep, not the number of counts.
  5. Were there any penalties for the guard(s) that were using the wood block/dr beat so close to the stands? A friend of mine called me from the show so that I could hear Madison...all I heard for half the show was the gock from the woodblock (ie whenever Madison was playing softer, the cell phone picked up the sound of the rehearsing guard over the horns). I don't know how bad this effected the enjoyment of Madision's show in person, but it was pretty glaring over the phone.
  6. And what's the problem/so surprising about that? I'm thinking Madision '90-'91 and whichever year they danced with bar stools- those guys really moved nicely!
  7. I think (just IMO) Star was more about the overall visual package, not necessairly the hardest work. So, back in the days of less than 39 inch rifles and less than 37 inch sabres, weapons wern't all that visual. Heck, weapons still aren't all that visual (and this from someone who spends most of the show spinning a rifle or sabre). During the British show, the maces really fit, but I guess it was a visual decision that weapons otherwise didn't fit in with their show.
  8. Likewise LisaLisaMoMeesa (and the rest of the Renegades, he## the rest of the Senior Corps guards- its July and we won't see any other Sr guards until next weekend!)
  9. So what are everybody's fav costumes? Personally I loved the white, one-shoulder dresses with blue lining and the big white feather in thier hair from '89 (I think). I don't know if they had a more "healthy" guard that year, of if it was the evils of white spandex, but it looked a lot better on the field than it did up close!
  10. I would love to come and bring the CorpsVets guard- but I can't speak for the whole group. We would need to see where we're at a little closer to the event (I don't know where we will be as a corps or a guard in 2 years). Sounds like fun though- keep posting updates on this event!
  11. Saw 'em in person 3 times over the last 4 days and I like the unis (including the hats that I saw for the first time on Saturday in Orlando). I wouldn't wear it on the street, but I think its perfectly acceptable for the field. What I thought was distracting was the loose hair- after they do the hair dance, I haven't yet seen all of them getting their hair back into a pony for the rest of the show. So instead of watching the intended show, I'm watching the girls mess with thier hair and then my eye gets dragged to the one that doesn't get her hair back up. Maybe its just me. Maybe it will be worked out as they do more shows.
  12. I saw the corps at Dothan and Orlando, so I'll add my 2 cents: Disclaimer: I am a guard person, so that's all I watch unless something else on the field pulls my attention away from the guard. Teal Sound: I watched their guard warm up and saw that they have a decent guard book- I think it got muddied up on the field due to nerves and inexperience. If they clean it up and learn to enjoy themselves on the field, they should have a nice little show in Madision. Kwanis: I thought the quality was pretty good for this early in the season. I think this Superheros show could be real entertaining if they had a lot of fun with it- thats not comming accross so far. The field is pretty dark right now with black unis and dark flags (not to mention the dark skies with all the rain at these 2 shows!), I hope they have some changes/surprises in store for us as this show develops. Magic: Strong guard- sweet rifle line! They performed pretty well in Dothan considering the skies opened up and poured on them. This is one of those shows that I can appreciate the technical proficiency of the guard without actually getting into the show. Some of the performers were markedly stronger than others. I couldn't really get into the music, so I hope they pull out something GE-wise to pull the audience in by Madison- I would love to see this corps make it into Div I. Crown: Saw this one from the front goal line in Orlando so all I could see was one side of the field. Great unis on the guard! Yellow and peach toga variations. Some real nice weapon work and nice dance moves. Really wish I could have seen it from the stands. They came on right after it poured rain, so there was some slipping around on the field. Spirit: Even though its Holsinger, I really like the music and I get distracted into looking at the drumline sometimes- nice cymbal moves and good staging of the drumline during their features. The guard gets divided into 3 groups a lot in this show (rifle, sabre, body and rifle, flag, body). The opener is very agressive musically, but the guard looks tentative. The guard book is pretty meaty and except for performance, the girls handle it well. I wish for more confidence for this guard and some GE punches- if that happens this will no doubt be a top 12 show in Madison (assuming the rest of the corps comes along too re: clenliness and tone, etc). Cadets: Sorry, I am not into this show. I hope its a work in progress and they wow me later in the season. It may be unfair of me, but if VK did this show, I would love it- they pander to the audience a lot- a lot of individual performance during Boogie Woogie- 5 male guard members come out in thier underwear and take up field space getting dressed, they end in an old time patriotic pose. Between the guard being in all different street-clothes unis and significant portions of the show being without a unison guard statement, I felt like GE was missing from the show. BD: Loved most of it! The body movement of the guard is exquisitely fabulous. Loved the "quiet" start of ragtime- its nice to not have your face blasted off all the time. They seem to take some chances in this show, so I think it may take some time for the audience to get into it. I know Channel One and House of the Risisng Sun, but had a hard time picking it out- hope that clears up. Cavies: I was skeptical, but that didn't last long. I think we will have a lot of fun with their "Tron" guard uniforms, but they really do fit in with the show. Of course my eyes were glued to the guard during the performance because (even with some early season dirt) they were fabu! Watched the victory concert at Dothan and realized that I love whatever it is the horns are playing! Loved the clicking of the valves in the rhythem section. The guard work really comes accross well with 4 ft pvc corners and 10 ft sticks that eventually form a big square that the boys get down and dance in. If someone comes up with something to beat these guys, I will be surprised.
