  1. "pretty decent" is not cadets quality. that's the problem. 2012 and 2013 were half-baked and mailed in. 2011 was saved by the drill. 2010, also meh.
  2. I don't think it does imply that. In this situation where (1) "If X, then Y," and (2) "X is not true," it does not necessarily follow that Y is not true. In other words, X is a sufficient condition, but not a necessary one for Y's truth. Anyway... not important. I vehemently disagree. My observation is that the paying DCI audience is (1) alumni, (2) parents/family of current members, and (3) band kids. In my observation, most alumni (at least those of my "vintage" -- late 90s) couldn't care less that trombones are now legal. Also, parents/family and band kids have never heard of DCP and are therefore underrepresented in your survey. In my opinion, DCP has largely become an echo chamber for alumni from the 70s and 80s who are trying to hold on to the "good old days" of drum corps. There are occasionally some good discussions, but on the whole, the posters here tend to completely overestimate the weight of their opinions as measured against the direction of the activity in the whole. Trombones? I guarantee that parents/families and band kids didn't even know that they weren't legal to start with, and have literally zero opinion about it now. Also, just for fun... here's a pic of the Madison Scouts trombone section from this weekend's rehearsal:
  3. they are being quiet because they have no idea what the show is... george needs to stop pretending he is a good program coordinator. otherwise, its gonna be another half-baked, 3rd place design
  4. Yeah, but you said... ...meaning that the 82 votes there were the important ones. Huh? No... I'd be willing to bet that DCP doesn't sell email addresses to third parties. (If they do, remind me to close my account) The fact that you got such a survey (as have I many times over the years) has to do with the fact that you are on some DCI mailing list or bought something from DCI at some point. The point is... you can trumpet a self-selecting, "home team" survey as being evidence of some consensus among the broader market, but that doesn't make it true. It's like going to a Rand Paul website and asking if Reagan was a better president than Obama.
  5. OK, even accepting that the posting audience here is "a market" for DCI (something I do not accept), let me rephrase: If you think that the opinions of 82 self-selecting internet voters is valid "market research," you should take a stats class. Further, if you think that DCI cares at all about the opinions of those 82 voters, they just don't. The DCP user base is not the group that DCI is marketing to.
  6. if you think dcp is "the market," i've got some oceanfront property in arizona to sell you.
  7. the cadets mellophone line was spectacular before mr. williams ever got there. let me think of a good example...oh yeah: 1982- 1989. i think we can all thank jim prime, michael klesch, robert smith [wrote the book in 89], and jay bocook for the wicked mellophone parts. without them, the staff wouldn't have anything to clean! and yes, vanguard and blue devils got a HUGE gift on finals night in 2001. :]
  8. d_grey, check out the recap... devils: 19.6 cadets: 19.7 what are you talking about? imo, the cadets were FAR superior to the blue devils in 2000. much MORE than the judge thought. [and 2001, for that matter.]
  9. i hardly see any reason for this. i have an opinion. i do not understand why you need to poke fun of it...thats what ramd is for. i'm gonna take the high road on this one, and HOPE that you don't represent the rest of the members of carolina crown...if i were in your corps, i would be a little upset. and trust me...i am probably the antithesis of a 'bando.' i was marching in dci finals before you even knew which end of the horn to blow out of.
  10. it's all good...i can see that you and i appriciate different styles of hornline... but seriously...check out the nuance with which the cadets played...the super fast section at the very beginning- they managed to play gently and quietly. moondance- able to shift styles in a heartbeat- classic orchestral to van morrisson. are you kidding me? they played the tar out of this tune, too. style was certainly in tact. ballad- put in the dvd, turn it up, and close your eyes. sounds like they are standing in an arch, huh? wow. farandole- check out some of the inner baritone/mello parts in the middle section. the most musical moments of DCI finals, IMO. also, their tubas [er contras, er whatever they call them] blew the house down from 11:05 to the end of the show...WOW. i would like to have seen this line right before or after any of the star lines. i bet they would have held their own, and buried them on the decibel meter. :]
  11. i don't know... cleanliness doesn't make up 'the greatest hornline of all time' in my book. i find that show rather boring, except for the end of the opener, and the very end. i'm still waiting for ANY star hornline, including blast or BT, to play loud. they nailed attacks and releases, but where's the volume, boys? my pick: cadets 2001. the most musical line i have ever heard...they had it all.
  12. cadets 2001. proved there is more to drum corps than playing loud. the most musical hornline i have ever heard. incredible.
  13. cool topic here.. whoever that was who referenced suncoast 1985: THANK YOU! i thought i was the only person on the planet who is in awe of that brass line. also- devils 93 high brass thing...awesome. cadets every year since 1992. amazing. star 1991 mellophones. almost perfect. peace..
