  1. H.W. out may not be a bad thing. But he already did the damage in the membership ranks. I think, even with M.R., this will be a year to rebuild (aka Madison 07,09).
  2. According to Wikipedia and the USGA: "From the time of the 1912 additions of New Mexico and Arizona, until the 1959 additions of Alaska and Hawaii, the NGS placed the geographic center of the entire United States at a point near the town of Lebanon, Kansas. Since 1959 this location still stands as the Geographic Center of the Contiguous United States, while the geographic center of the entire U.S. moved to a point northeast of Belle Fourche, South Dakota." Since there are no corps from Hawaii and Alaska, let's say it is Lebanon, Kansas. The cities with large stadiums capable of handling DCI would be Manhattan, KS (Kansas State University), Lawrence, KS (The University of Kansas), and Kansas City, MO (Arrowhead).
  3. 1. 27th Lancers 2. Suncoast Sound 3. Bridgemen 4. St. Ignatius All Girls 5. Knights (with the gray and purple uniforms!)
  4. Lebanon, IL is hosting their DCI St. Louis show for the second time this year. Last year this show was so crowded that not only was the front stands completely full, but the hill on the one side of the main stands was completely full of people sitting on blankets, lawn chairs, etc. http://www.dci.org/schedule/detail.cfm?event=bdd27fb8-fd8b-4ff4-94fa-1d25705a854a
  5. I hear the new corps from Trapper Creek, Alaska is thinking of having their camps in Beaver Creek, Yukon. THOSE TRADERS!!!!!
  6. They sound pretty darn good for February to me. And I've been around this activity for quite a few decades. Really enjoyed them last year and looking forward to them even more this year.
  7. Might be easier to ask who does not have open spots right now. Seems like many of the top 12 and the majority of the 13+ WC corps are still looking for brass, plus everyone in OC.
  8. The link you provided has not been updated for a couple of years, and the last posts on their Facebook page are from 2009. This one may have died as well.
  9. Start writing emails. I would start with last year's number one and work your way down. Or maybe number 12 and work your way up. http://www.dci.org/corps/
  10. Last I saw, Madison also had openings in all sections, including the 20-man tuba section.
  11. If that's the case, there are some corps that would be in trouble (i.e., Blue Stars).
  12. I hate to say it, but only 50 horns at a mid-winter camp is not very promising anymore. Most corps in the top 12 are pulling 150-200+ horn player candidates at their audition camps, which gives you a good selection to pick the 72-80 summer members from. If you only have 50 to start, it's tough to get a solid 72-80 member line by May.
  13. Last I heard, Madison still had openings and their camp on 2/17-19 is in the Dallas area. Sounds like you should go check it out. http://madisonscouts.org/Madison_Scouts/Auditions_Overview.html
  14. The one surprise for me in this video is Gino stating that they still need mellophone players. They've always had a great mello line, so I would have thought that they would have tons of people trying out for those spots. I mean, who would not want to play those parts???
  15. For the corps in this range, it is all about veteran member retention and staff stability. Based on the number of age-outs in the left stands at 2011 semis, it looks like Blue Stars had a bunch of members aging out (at least 40+). Plus, their drop in placement and poor choice of show in 2011 cannot be helping their retention of 19-21 year old vets this winter. I see Spirit, The Academy and Glassmen as possibly challenging them for their eleventh place/finalist spot in 2012. As for the others, no predictions from me until at least the completion of March or April camps. Topo many variables still out there (i.e., show choices, tech staff announcements, camp pics/videos).
  16. And the 2012 season is off and running today. Many corps have their first major camps of the year this weekend, and thousands of young adults will be trying to make their dream corps all over the country. May they all have safe travels and enjoyable experiences!
