  1. He made it sound like he's going to take the whole first season before really implementing any change. I sure hope he has good ideas how to make the activity viable moving forward. He wants to think outside the box to figure out how to get more revenue and sponsorships and to get DCI back on ESPN even was mentioned. I appreciate him doing this interview! I'm cautiously optimistic.

I first want to say that I appreciate the thoughtful and honest OP. Likewise, the myriad of responses and sentiments have added nicely to the conversation without devolving into madness. Thank you all!

I also want to add the caveat that I am not and could never be a DCI judge, executive, designer, writer, etc. I am a guy who marched in high school in the early 2000s, fell in love with DCI, and then I chose a path that didn't involve music. I walked away from the activity altogether and 2005 was the last year that I followed DCI closely until this season. I wish that was not so. My reasons for walking away had nothing to do with the quality of the product, but with me wanting to run away from that season of my life and the trauma that surrounded it.

After a dinner with friends who I discovered were also closet DCI fans, we spontaneously purchased tickets for the Southeastern Championship and I began to reopen that part of myself that I thought was long gone.

Attending that show was like stepping back in time for me. I felt so many emotions that I couldn't keep up. It was profoundly nostalgic and painful at the same time. This might sound crazy, but DCI has become a portal for me to face my past and to reclaim that which was lost. That's why the Colts show this year was cathartic and therapeutic for me. I was finding the courage to heal and to come home to a part of myself that I had determined never to look at again.

Isn't that the power of creative expression? Isn't that, after all, part of what this activity is about? I can geek out over scores and captions, but I did my best to appreciate every corps and that attitude allowed me to thoroughly enjoy the artistry of each performance, no matter the placement level. 2023 has brought me back and I'm here to stay.

I am now working through catching up on old shows and watching the evolution of the activity. We all have our preferences, but I find that I am just happy to be engaged again. For me, it is anything other than boring.

There are a lot of great shows to catch up on since 2005! Enjoy your journey!

I always find watching every summer therapeutic and it reminds me that I have a deep passion for music and this activity. Since moving to Texas, I am able to watch more shows in person than I ever could in Seattle. I enjoyed 2023 more than any year. I've had to work extremely hard to not care as much about scores and more about how the shows make me feel inside.

  3. I am trying to figure out what will be streamed this week on Flo. There is no information on their app detailing which days are going to be streamed. If I remember correctly, last year was Prelims performances up until the theater broadcast and then all of Semis and Finals nights.

Does anyone know if this is the same this year?

I apologize if this has been asked previously, but I couldn't find a previous post.

  4. I used to love BD, especially in the 90's. I auditioned for BD when I was 20. They were my first choice. I totally understand why people want to march their. Sadly, I have enjoyed very few of their shows in the last 20 years.

Sigh. I hope all the members of every corps have a great season and enjoy performing their butts of for us!

  5. I've had this same question for years! As someone who lived in Seattle for many years, I know how hard it was to recruit local members into the Cascades organization because there were so few marching programs. I moved to the DFW area over 7 years ago and the number of big, quality marching band programs here is insane. This area could totally support a drum corps. There are marching members, staff members and money in a lot of these programs. Let's do this!

  6. It was a crazy year, for sure. The Blue Devils and Bluecoats were both incredible and in different ways. It was going to be all about the numbers and math. Bluecoats needed more GE love and they didn't get it. It is crazy that Bluecoats were above Blue Devils in both GE and Music and still lost. I'm glad i wasn't judging, that's for sure.

Crown and SCV were both very close too. I was a little surprised Crown didn't beat SCV finals night - the energy from Crown was second to Bluecoats in the stands. The crowd ate up Crown in a very special way during that performance.

Regardless, it's hard to be too upset by any of it. I believe the Bluecoats had the best show, and a show we will remember for a long time. I believe they should have won, but it's impossible to be too upset because that Blue Devils show was incredible, and it has been a LONG time since I've felt that way. It was an amazing year of drum corps.

I completely agree. It was an awesome program!

I agree. It was one of my favorites all season, and it was only magnified live during finals week!

There were a lot of great ballads this year, and I'm not sure which is my favorite, but I really enjoyed these finalists' ballads:

Bloo, Crown, Cavies, BK, Blue Stars, BD.
