  1. Boy, iI remember waiting until January or February to get the albums on vinyl. What a great day in the winter that was. Does DCI not make everything immediately available on Season Pass?
  2. Slightly off-topic, but it kills me when people say things like "We don't think these things through, Harvard, we do it old school." Harvard's the oldest school in the country. The Cooler is the most gregious example of this I can think of. I guess I'm medium school, because I can remember seeing some of those, but never really did any (83-88, and a pithead to boot. Anyone who thinks the pit has it easy cause they don't have to march or carry should volunteer to move that stuff one time.)
  3. Has there ever been a female director of a top 12 corps? I remember Andrea Birbilis from Northern Aurora back in the day, and... um... I once thought the Long Island Kingsmen's director was a woman. Nope. Noel Borden, not Noelle. D'oh!
  4. I'm going to be Biased Boy and say check out the Knights 1983. For a treat, see if you can find Boston 1983. They had like seventeen horns and three drummers that year (he said, hyperbolizing). It's a kick of a show.
  5. I'll take Madison 75 sops. (82 if the 75 Boys are busy.) Garfield's altos/mellos from 1984. (Cavaliers 86) BD baris from 1988. (BD 84) Phantom's contras 1996. (SCV 1987) Soloists-Jeff Kievit (Muchachos) and Dan Moore (Knights)-sop, Bonnie Ottt (BD) and Pepe Notaro (everyone)-French horn,Barbara Moroney (Garfield)-mello, Dave Lang (Colts)-bari. Tim Salzman can write it, Wayne Downey can teach 'em. Give me a snare line of Robbie Robinson (XMen), Rob Carson (SCV), Pat Petrillo and Pete Castellano (Bridgemen), Nate Baruch (BD), Tom Float and Ralph Hardimon (Anaheim), and Rich Viano (Star of Indiana). Just let me have Garfield 93's tenor line. For cymbals, I'll take SCV 87, and Madison 85 if SCV is busy. Suncoast Sound 85 is the bass line di tutti bass lines, so I'll have them. My all-star Pit has Martha Leeson and Joey Gaudett(SCV), Paula Williams (Spirit), Bob Blomberg (Knights), Cliff DeArment (Blue Stars), Kirk Gay (Star), Bob Morrison (XMen), and Todd Wake (Madison Scouts). Fred Sanford will write it. Bob Dubinski will clean it. Pat Scollin and Kent Cater to tech. Give me Anaheim 74 and Madison 88's rifle lines, 27's flag line from 1975, and Phantom's sabres from 1996. If they must dance, I'll take the Bridgemen from 1982. Peggy Twiggs, Tam Easterwood and Mike Turner can cook the book. Kari Zimny will clean it. DMs-Scotty Poulsen (Kilts), Dan Feeney (Madison), Duffy Silk (27). I'm torn between Becky Wood and Ashley Tappan(Star) and Kristy Spears (PR)for the "Hot DM who also rocked" spot. Take 'em all. That puts the membership rolls around 200, but still...
  6. Don't miss it. Don't even be late. -Oscar Hammerstein II
  7. Wasn't her first gig after aging out of corps with the Crossmen? I sat at the rails at Madison for semis in 85 and I could swear I saw Barbara in overalls with the Xmen staff that night. She rocked, pure and simple. The comparisons to Bonnie Ott are valid, IMO.
  8. Thanks. I don't drink, so your smiley guy can have mine, too.
  9. If you buy the idea that any corps can "win the night," a la Sarah HUghes at Salt Lake City, then it makes for some exciting competition. I know I thought SCV won the night in 83.
  10. I saw the Kilts in exhibition at the 4th of July fireworks show in Evanbston, IL in 1978. The next year Evanston had a full show, with Kilts, Saginaires, Pioneer, Cavies and Phantom. Phantom was on first because they raced to Soldier Field to do another show. That 79 Phantom corps was so good they could have done 7 shows that night and won them all. That's how I got hooked, and that explains my love affair with the Phantom Regiment. For a long time (till 96) it was like being a Cubs fan. Which I am as well.
  11. Buy the DVDs! That seems to be the solution! Sorry, wrong thread.
  12. Still sucked. And people who tell me what I am and am not entitled to are entitled to my fut in their arse. It's my drum corps as much as yours. And that broadcast sucked.
  13. I will not. delete - GD Wait, no I won't. It sucked. So why would I buy it?
  14. All y'all who are propping DCI up with the whole "Be glad you got anything" party line can be first in line when the revolution comes and you're made to eat your CDs and DVDs. That might be better-tastring than the table scraps you seem to think we're entitled to. And, of course, this is the first year that you didn't get it for free. (Unless you're a cable pirate, and more power to you. Or in jail.) It's called a cable bill. Still sucked. I deserve better, and so do you.
  15. Well put. All y'all. Keep on keeping on. And on. And on and on and on...
  16. Permit me. ESPN2 doesn't show us Gonzaga and the university of the Pacific doing their tip drills and their layup drills, at least not for five minutes at a time. we don't go into the University of Nebraska weightroom to see the Huskers pumping up for Saturday. Sports fans know the hard work, etc. that goes into gameday. So do we. Why shove that down my friggging throat?
  17. The #### with that way of thinking. DCI insists on cutting the performance content out of their show, they get no money from me. No joke. Why does DCI insist on spending 5,6,8 minutes showing me kids telling me about how they want to do their best, instead of showing the corps DOING THEIR BEST? We all know that's what the objective is, and any casual ESPN2 watcher would know as well. In short:This bites. As expected.
  18. I wouldn't say the Colts jumped quickly; they were a top 25 corps since 1982. Their program did get more sophisticated eventually, but it certainly wasn't Spirit/Suncoast sudden. I agree with everyone who's said that good staff is key. Without it, Spirit and Star would have been Memphis Blues-not to slag off on MB3, cause they rocked, but Spirit and Star both had MVP staff people early on, like George Zingali, Dennis DeLucia, Pat Scollin, Bob Dubinski, Jim Ott and Tom Float, which bumped them up big time. Spirit also, I think, had geography on their side-the first corps in a long time to tap the wealth of band kids in the deep South who wanted to march at home.
  19. I'll take 9th.Put 27 ahead of us, knock off the Freelancers, Cavies, Bridgemen, and Sky Ryders. 1983 was not a great year.
  20. I got paid to march. And I didn't even march. I just stood there and played. Heh.
  21. How could North Star not make an appearance at DCI East?
  22. The 1987 DCI video has some footage of the Railmen, talking about corporate sponsorship being the next big thing in corps.
  23. Sky Ryders 87 had an awesome visual show, and maybe the best guard ever. But I'm personally over WSS so I'll go with VK 84. Still one of the most confidently-sold concept programs I've ever seen. They knew they were going to break through that year, and it showed. Word to GMichael on the Sky Ryders show in 83. Good low brass (contra solo!) but nothing else. We spent all of second tour looking up at them saying "Whuh?"
