  1. The answer to #2 is the Saginaires and Valley Fever. Pit fever...catch it. On the same note, who was the last DCI finalist corps to play marching (ie non-concert) timpani in their pit?
  2. The pitheads would finish their show, then turn to the field and kneel to watch the "curtain call." It was a nice effect, but at encore shows, they had to march to the backfield double time to get off with the rest of the corps!
  3. Even though it didn't win, Garfield 82 is thought of by many as a mold-breaker. As are 83, 84, and 85.
  4. Gonna stop now, but yes, if one dish (or show, oy vey iz mir)( is worse than the others, it's the worst. That's how the language she works. Qualifiers and quantifiers. That's Garfield 1984. The worst championship show, in the opinion of one who's seen them all since in75. Done.
  5. No, I don't. Like any list of artistic entities, one is better or, say it with me, WORSE than another, in someone's OPINION. The point of the thread is to find out which Championship show people think is worse than the others, hence the WORST. Lots of people like Garfield's 1984 show. I'm not one of them. If, as appears likely, you have a problem with that, write it down, write "BURN THIS" on the bottom of the page, do it, then get over it. Brainiac.
  6. Sorry, just got back in. This is from a few pages back. I consider the Garfield 1984 show to be my least favorite winning show ever, and tremendously overrated at that. The drill in many places is plain unattractive and the drum book is not particularly exciting at all (and was not all that well played on the field either). Part of it is a personal bias against too much West Side Story in corps, part of it is because I think BD and Phantom outdid them that night, and BD just had a better show. In 84 I just think Garfield got a little more credit than they deserved. Now, 1985, THAT show kicks some serious azz. And whoever it was called this thread "passing judgment," well, duh. Read the first post, Brainiac. And I saw them on tour plenty.
  7. It's interesting how many folks are slagging the ride cymbal parts in the Largo. Interesting because PR has almost always lightened up one number in their arsenal, usually the concert: Think back to the Hall of the Mountain King in 78-79, or Pagliacci in 77 and 91, or even the Latin percussion in Spartacus for Dance of the Rebels. Topic? Phantom by a length, with what was up to that time the greatest visual program ever. (And no one drops a mallet either...)
  8. I remember seeing it somewhere like A&E or PBS or somewhere a couple of times-good stuff if you're into military bands. The most interesting thing to me about that clip is the flag corps actually spinning and tossing the Swiss colors. I don't think that would go over well with Old Glory.
  9. You're most welcome, but you might want to shout out to the Messrs. Wren, Hurley, and Brazale while you're at it. Although I 'm sure you've done so in the past, many times. Marrone, that was some drum corps there.
  10. 1976-Blue Devils 1977-Phantom 1978-Phantom 1979-Phantom 1980-27 1981-27 1982-Blue Devils 1983-SCV 1984-Blue Devils 1985-Garfield 1986-SCV 1987-SCV 1988-Madison 1989-Phantom 1990-Garfield 1991-Phantom 1992-GArfield 1993-Phantom 1994-27 (sorry) 1995-Cavaliers 1996-Phantom That's when I stopped seeing 'em.
  11. Or professional white guy Scott Van Pelt to holler "Tiger Tiger Tiger Woods, y'all!" Now that would be totally sweet!!! Man, this is gonna suck.
  12. If that's the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, then those numbers are probably close to right. That Tattoo is BOA or DCI writ large and for a worldwide audience (and mostly pros), like the World Cup compared to the Fianl Four-One is big woldwide, the other is big here.
  13. The best park & blow of all time IMO is Madison's Malaguena in 1981. Just awesome.
  14. It really isn't that hard. Anyone who's in a frat or sorority should be able to get it. And it's not "Young Bethany, You Should Always Indemnify Athletes."
  15. Tell me again, for the first time, why it's important to me that DCI reaches out to the average Joe who watches ESPN2? And in doing so further waters down the content of what once was an unimpeachably entertaining 4 hours of pledge drive television?
  16. ESPN2 gave screen time to a "Magic:The Gathering" tournament once. Oy.
  17. I'm concerned it will be too much like last year's broadcast, which sucked. Technically it was great, but I have no tolerance for all the up-close-and-personal stuff. Said it before, say it again, if this is how drum corps needs to sell itself to get more "fans," than drum corps doesn't need more fans.
  18. No, thank you. I'd like the 1986 version. Blue, black, and silver, with spats, please. Hold the ruffled bib.
  19. Ahem: DM:WHAT TIME IS IT? CORPS: KNIGHT TIME!!!!! Oh yeah. VK 85 yelled "Tastes great/Less filling!" I know Ist Canadian Regiment and I think someone else in 1981 yelled "That's the fact, Jack!" Seattle Imperials yelled "Yeah" that same year.
  20. After the crazy-go-nuts shows in 86 and 87 (outer space and the circus), when I heard Star of Indiana was doing Porgy and Bess in 1988, I immediately expected a big Catfish Row set and a double amputee emoting on the 50, pulling himself around on his goat cart. But I'll be hornswoggled if they didn't just play the music and kick it all over the place. One of the great mallet section performances ever, and the first show I ever heard that gave the snares and tenors equal voice (except maybe SCV 1980).
