  1. Thank you all for your help. I'll check with the corps themselves. I think my other option could have been to give the money as a one time gift. I think there is a provision somewhere along those lines that allow you to give up to a certain amount of money to anybody you deem without the possibility of being taxed? Not sure on that but thanks again!!
  2. Okay, Here's my story. In the past, I have donated sums of money to certain corps and to Friends of DCI. I do understand when I receive a gift for my donation i.e. tickets, CD's etc.. that the value of these gifts must be subtracted and the remaining portion I can write off on my taxes. My question is, how does this apply when I choose to help out a certain member of a corps who is having a financial crisis? I would like to help them with their tour fees and dues. What documentation should I request from the corps other than a receipt? And for their non profit status to be considered valid, do I need to make a check out to the corps and then state where and who that money is be earmarked for? Since I do not want any gifts in return, can I deduct the entire amount for my taxes? Any help would be appreciated. Thankx
  3. Before you tell me, I realize how important it is for DCI to have quarters and semis in the evening to attract the local crowd and the school kids etc.. But does anybody else miss when semis started around 9:00 AM and went till about 5PM? Back in Boulder, Birmingham and Montreal, it felt kind of like a combination hooky day and NCAA tournament type day the way it was set up and the scores for each corps were announced a corps performance later. I know Boulder had no lights and I don't see any in my pics of McGill but there seem to be a lot of anticipation for 24 hours what would occur the next evening. And some of the best times I had were that Friday night before finals. And when was the last year of the all day semi shows?
  4. Maynard still around at 78 years young. He's playing tomorrow night in Denver at a local high school.
  5. I thought the US Open had the most professional looking logo in all of drum corps. A eagle inside a circle with stars and stripes making up the body and the words "US OPEN" "MARION, OHIO" and "NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP" underneath that. I have the decal under glass and at one time had a ringer tee with the same on the upper right chest. I remember how cool my friends thought that shirt was back home.
  6. Softly as I leave you should be Cavies, not Madison. VK- Jaws and Magical Mystery Tour. BD- Chicago III Suite. Troopers- My choice would be The Cowboys. Freelancers-Bellavia or The Bells Guardsmen- Tiger of San Pedro
  7. Same Question, different corps. Velvet Knights 1979. They had a hot 5 woman cymbal line too. Greg Meader (BD 80) and Lawrence Paproli? (BD 81) also marched VK with her. And I can't recall her name.
  8. I recall talking after 04 finals in Denver with some SCV alums who hated Mike DeAngelo. Don't remember the story but can anybody share why? I believed he was judging Percussion in the late 80's and early 90's.[
  9. Take it for what it is, but I had conversations with two different DCI directors who gave me the same number for Miami in 1983. A little less than 8000 paid. A big reason why DCI never returned. And this was the summer after the Overtown riots and with the Orange Bowl just a couple miles away may have scared off a lot of folks. That was a very turbulent time in South Florida. Just before the South Beach fashion model scene began.
  10. Even though it is cost prohibitive, I would love to have a corps golf bag complete with colors and logos!! I would have no problem paying $500 for one

  13. I read on a CG website that their budget for this season was around 30K. It had listed 4K which was allocated for instructor salaries. Are any of the corp's designers, captions heads, techs etc.. making enough to keep them around year after year? I know plenty who teach corps for the love of it and to give back to the activity, but with the way our economy is, how do they afford to take a summer off for minimal amount of money when the alternative is to work teaching summer school, private lessons or just taking a temporary job to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table? I know the majority of the corps are all working a on shoestring budget, but is the thought of making more money by switching corps the reason we are seeing well known staffers in new surroundings?
  14. I don't remember which John Belushi film it was, but there was a scene where someone is attempting to drive a car into a garage and Belushi is directing the car into the garage and as it hits a wall, Belushi says" That's good". That scene always brings back a memory for me with the Blue Stars in 82 in Canada staying in a small town outside Montreal (Varennes)? The director's wife was driving one of the buses to Olympic Stadium that day for finals. Our bus somehow got lost from the rest of the corps and we ended up on some really narrow neighborhood street. The kind of street that has cars parked on both sides as far as you can see. Anyway, Mrs. ??? asks me to jump out and direct her as we hit a dead end and she's gonna try and turn around with the help of a narrow alley. I'm barely 4-5 steps off the bus as she starts backing up and takes the side off some sedan on her rear side. Before I can get to the front as she pulls forward, she takes the rear bumper off another car. Trying to pretend she didn't know what she had done, I told her, "You're all clear now". Needless to say she went like bat out of #### down that street and I somehow kept thinking how we would be spending a lot more time in Canada than the summer schedule had mentioned!! Ah, the memories!!!
  15. William, If you don't mind me asking, what does your brother do nowadays?
  16. 1977 in Denver DCI. Marched in 105 shows. Have been a spectator at 317 others.
  17. Denver isn't that far for the corps. They left Denver last year on a Sunday after finals and performed in San Diego, what Tuesday or Wednesday night? And that was after spending an entire day in either Cedar City or St. George, Utah to rehearse. Next show after Denver would be either Salt Lake or Las Vegas. BK traveled 550 miles a few weeks ago overnight. The Denver show would retain its Saturday night status, then either a Grand Junction or Glenwood Springs show on Sunday or Monday, Salt Lake or Las Vegas Tuesday or Wednesday night, then a show or two in San Diego to seed that area for L.A. The other route could be San Antonio on the same Saturday, Midland/El Paso on Sunday or Monday nights, Phoenix area Tuesday or Wednesday night, Las Vegas Thursday or Friday night, and then a San Diego area show Saturday or Sunday night. All of these cities have drum corps shows in them or have in the past.
  18. DCI wouldn't allow the top twelve in any show a week before finals on the same night. Unless it ran like Allentown. NoCal will probably get the early season shows and as corps make their way west, look for Denver and San Antonio to be the big shows on the way. Possibly, Salt Lake Area, Las Vegas and Phoenix as well. Most likely, the Riverside and San Diego shows will lead up to finals. Too bad we can't George Wong's LA Odossey show back for one year. That would be the cat's meow!!!
  19. Spending part of my life in the hospitality business, the entertainment business and now on the government side, I can probably share with you why San Diego could have been eliminated as a possible venue among other sites. This is a partial list, but feel free to add on if I may have missed anything. 1. Stadium availability? Soccer teams, baseball teams usually have dates blacked out way ahead of time. Concert promoters have the same courtesy for dates months ahead of time. 2. Stadium Concert side seating? I believe DCI requires at least 25k seats on the concert side. But I could be wrong on that. 3. Housing availability? Are there enough school districts in the area that will allow for the corps to be housed in? Some districts will not allow it at all over local concerns, complaints of "noise" from neighbors. i.e. Boulder, CO 1978 If any of these three do not pass, then nix that city and move on. 4. Budget. How much will it cost DCI to rent the two stadiums they use during the week? And the cost to run them? What part does the local government willing to pick up? Stadium costs such as concessionaires, parking, ushers, grounds crews and security( usually police) overtime can run alone $50 -80 an hour per officer. How much to fly in and house and feed the DCI staff, judges, announcers, photographers, ticket staff and runners? At what is the cost to obtain local permits for parking, liquor licenses for parties, parades, standstills etc... How much to produce the CD's, DVD's, Cinecasts and telecasts that we all love and endure? DCI is usually (with the exception of Madison) held in a major city because of all the hidden costs to produce our toys. Travel is a big cost when trying to find a media outlet to produce our shows. Notice the proximity between Bristol, CT(ESPN headquarters) and Foxboro? My brother who is a TV producer and director but who has no drum corps attachment, but has watch the broadcasts and DVD's has estimated at least 25-30 production staff is required on site. Who pays for their per diems? Travel is another reason DCi will not be back in Jackson, MS among other problems. This is why DCI is in D.C., Denver, Orlando, Boston and now L.A. Not that San Diego isn't a major market. 5. Hotel room availability? Is there any major conventions going on the same time in the city selected? Some conventions can attract 80-100K people. I hoped that I have answered somebody's questions as to why their city isn't selected. I personally think that DCI feels they now have the numbers to put the championships nearly anywhere and hard core fans will attend no matter the distance.
  20. I heard Mike De'Angelo really PO'd SCV some years ago. A heck of an instructor, but I don't remember the judging snafu details. Somebody from SCV can probably give us that.
  21. Have they ever replaced the bleacher seats? I went to a couple of Super Bowls there and the seating was tight. As I remember, it is a very old stadium where they continue to add seats over the years. Fans will have to move their heads around the folks in front of them. Kind of like an old movie theater, before stadium seating. Fans may have been spoiled the past couple of years in Denver and Foxboro with their state of the art stadiums. So I will not be surprised when the main complaints will be about the traffic, the sightlines and once again, the parking prices. The way so many fans love to spend time with their sons or daughters corps during the week, that is where the traffic issue will come into play. I remember going to 8-10 different corps schools in Denver and everywhere you went, a Cavalier flag, An SCV plate or any corps bumpersticker would go by you on the highway. I would say, don't plan on watching any rehearsels in SoCal if its 30 or 40 miles from where you are staying. I think a different venue would have been better in California. On the brighter side, fly into Vegas the weekend before and stay in SoCal three nights. And there's free rooms at Jack's house(VK)!!!
  22. Yup, Some cities are looking as DCI as a major event now in their town. Parking will increase if stadium management or parking owners realize an event will attract to so many thousands of attendees. It's a trend all over the country. I attend DCI shows , concerts and sporting events all over the USA and am not shocked at the price gouging anymore. It is free enterprise. But if you walked into a McDonalds next to a stadium and noticed they tripled their prices for that day, would you pay as well? Seems like restaurants in airports are already doing that.
  23. She's at the church getting Maddied. Maddied? Maddied! Please tell me you all know this one.
