  1. Well, considering Monique graduated from her high school in 1991, she would have been 26 her senior year?. No, she was 16 during that season and has written about her experiences that year quite extensively with her fellow comrades.
  2. Does this sound a little familiar? I remember a few years back a college band wanted to take a jab at a heated rival school who had football players accused of rape of a coed. The show idea was to have a school girl dressed in the rival colors, i.e. pigtails, very short kilt and knee high socks, knock at a door of a house front set on the 50 yard line and as she went in, the house would start rocking. The band pretended to portray the skit into something not associated at all with the rival school, but higher ups pulled the plug on this idea thankfully. Not something to joke about or mimic, but some schools and alums will hit below the belt when a incident like this makes the news.
  3. I once wore Madison's 97 tour shirt, The Pirates of Lake Mendota, the one with a skeleton horn player to a nursing home once. Didn't seem right but didn't think about either. I knew not to wear my BK 06 Dark Knights shirt living in the Denver area right after the Aurora massacre. On a brighter note, I wore my 05 Cavies CTA shirt with the bus on it? I was wearing it in Chicago in 08 and the bus driver liked it and let me on for free and wanted one. Another shirt I used to get weird looks was the BD (85?) 3/4 jersey with the Devil tympani player. In high school where I taught, they wouldn't allow me to wear my Crossmen shirt. Outsiders thought it was a motorcycle gang. Anybody else notice that Pearl vodka has pretty much the same fonts and style as the Pearl drum logo? I'll be in a bar with my Pearl drum shirt and I cannot tell you how many people think I'm promoting Pearl Vodka. Now that I think of it, the slogan on the back, "The best reasons to play drums", I should change mine to, "The best reason to play drums AND drink Vodka". Another is any DCI shirt I wear and other golfers will assume I play DCI irons.
  4. Lyons Colorado was the hardest hit area and has been the home away from home for the Velvet Knights during the 70's-90's. Bud and Sandy O'Conner worked with the corps and moved to Lyons and it was always a great place for VK to spend upwards to a couple of weeks (79) there instead of going back to the west coast during tours. In fact VK would hold a performance in full uniform for the locals before they left town. Former director Jack Bevins lives just outside Loveland and was one of many w/o the essentials and could not get out of his home as all roads were under water for quite some time. Former Muchachos Tom Pratt and Teddy Z have lived up in that area for many years, sounds like Teddy is okay. DM Ashley Drayer (07-08) from BK is from Loveland, believe she is okay but if you know the area, so many towns and cities were split by the flooding of the Big Thompson, Poudre, Platte Rivers and Boulder Creek to name a few, and now the flooding is affecting towns 70-90 miles away i.e. Fort Morgan and Sterling in NE Colorado. One interesting story is about bull snakes being found in resident's homes in the undamaged rooms. Wildlife experts have told folks that the snakes need to go somewhere and dry out so they enter the homes scaring the heck out of people. I remember the Big Thompson Flood of 1976 taking well over 100 lives. So far, that number is only 7 from this flood but hundreds are still missing. It is still a dangerous situation as round the clock coverage of this disaster continues on local TV today. If anyone remembers a early season show in Boulder Co in 1982 at Boulder HS, the stream running right behind the stadium is Boulder Creek that swelled up to 12 ft on Thursday.
  5. It's ironic for me to see this as I decided to pop in the 82 DVD this morning and then saw this thread. I have a lot of memories of 1982 being my age out year. A lot of them are in a thread titled "My tribute to Robert Lendmen". I'm having a hard time linking that page here. But my other memories would be the tie at DeKalb between Madison and Phantom and the crowd was really juiced up for their 2nd performances of the evening. I recall sitting in a parking lot watching Phantom's drum line warm up in Overland Park just being so impressed with their book. Also, lined up to do a parade somewhere in the Midwest and Madison next to us along w/ a couple of local bands and a drum major for one of the bands who really thought he was a bad A##, telling his band ," We are going to show these drum corps kids who they're messing with". And as he called his band to step off, one of the Madison snares played a really bad roll off and both corps busted out in laughter. My first time seeing Garfield in Whitewater that year and I could really sense the what I was watching was going to change the face of drum corps for years to come. Just a brilliant show for the time. For me, it was a great year to age out. A lot of people didn't care for Montreal, but I loved the experience. It really gave the championships an international feel to it visiting the sites on our days off and meeting the locals. Boy, I met a lot of gals that year, a guard member from Rivermen, Coachmen and Golden Garrison. We also had a 18 year old hanging out at our housing site in Varennes and she plunked herself down right in front of me during every rehearsal. Thanks to the Internet and FB, we have reconnected lo these many years. My favorite memory is when we were sharing a school with Phantom in the Midwest and pretty much everybody was feeling sorry for us and rightly so. Someone had donated T Bone steaks for our entire corps and as we broke for dinner, one of our instructors told us to go eat in front of Phantom's drum line who were still in rehearsal. Not the kindest thing to do, but I think he wanted people to know we were not as bad off as it seemed, but I could see the percussion section licking their chops as we enjoyed our best meal on tour. I could on and on, maybe some more later.
  6. The press box.com is not close to being a complete listing of show information. I am aware of hundreds of shows that are not listed on their site. In as much as it is a great website, I would wager the site is missing more shows than that are actually listed. One example: Press box website has scores for three drum corps shows on July 9th, 1983. Ypsilanti DCI North show, Cody Wy DC/NW show and Sacramento, a PDCA show. But on that date there were 15 drum corps shows in North America. The three mentioned above and shows in Gloversville NY Hanover PA Pittsburgh PA Fort Erie Ont East Haven CT Central Islip NY Schaumburg IL Lindsay Ont Olympia WA St-George de Beauce Que Laval Que and one in East London England a DCUK show DCI corps competed in all of these regional circuits as well as DCI sponsored shows and DCI only sponsored 4-5 regional shows, championship week and a few other biggies the entire season, DATR is one that comes to mind. The Toledo Key to the Sea show had so many corps, they had two shows of Prelims and two shows of Finals over two days involving 45 corps. And looking at that list , I only see three of that year's top twelve in the show as most likely everybody else was preparing for the US Open, another gigantic show.

  11. Based on the shows you attended, I would say lucky. The Cadets do a great job of promoting shows in their area and they were in attendance at all three. At DATR, I didn't buy 4 tickets until two days beforehand and I had choices of sitting in the club level between the 40's, 300 level between the 45's and settled on 100 level seats on the 45 yard line 20 rows from the field. Not normal for DATR. Plenty of great seats were available in Omaha, Boise wasn't sold out and it moved from Bronco stadium to a small high school stadium. I bought tickets last week for Allentown near the 40, another last minute purchase. Lake Highlands used to be a hard ticket, but with the TOC gutting that lineup, it wasn't as strong as in previous years. I think lineups had a lot to do with shows underselling tickets or selling out best sections in smaller venues.
  12. St Elmo's is a great choice, be prepared to spend some money.
  13. If you want to go hang with a lot of drum corps folks, Basey's on the west side of the stadium behind the Holiday Inn Express will be packed Friday and Saturday night. Not a big place but they put up a tent in the parking lot and you'll see about every instructor or director there sooner or later throwing down a few. Tavern on South just north of there usually has a corps alumni party, I think Cavies were there last year. And you can see Jack Bevins at his favorite joint, the Whistle Stop, 2 blocks east of the stadium across from Whataburger. A total dive, Jack forced me there, not my kind of place but incredibly cheap beer at happy hour. The block gets kinda scary late at night, best to walk around with company. The Whataburger draws a lot of homeless people in the parking lot though the drum corps kids usually go in big numbers and I have not seen them have any issues.
  14. And that right there my friend, is the next step DCI will take I hate to say.
  15. Alex, Are you sure that was Cadets 99? The reason I ask is a good friend of mine marched Cadets that year, we met up after the show and didn't have a conversation about that, but I do remember Crossmen in 98 having a pileup at DATR on side one near the front sideline. The bari or euph was marching across the sideline when that person lost his/her balance and took a fall and the Contras were following and because they couldn't see from the horn angle, about 1/2 dozen fell over each other. I remember the audience gasping as you could see it going on, but there was nothing anybody could do as each member went down one by one.
  16. This recap is screwed up. Madison earned a 7? on GE rep, though they were 1st in nearly every other caption.
  17. Nothing to worry about flying to a drum corps show alone. I have flown to San Antonio, San Francisco, New York City (for Allentown), Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Madison, Chicago, Louisville, Indianapolis, and Dallas among others to see drum corps. I've made so many friends in drum corps, I usually see someone else I know on the plane or the airport for that matter. I've also racked up enough ff miles that almost all of my flights are free which allows me to stay at better places than I normally would and business hotels can be the best places to stay since they are usually fairly empty and really selling rooms below cost as a drum corps show doesn't really qualify as a big weekend to them unless it is a regional or finals weekend.
  18. Has anybody seen the movie, We bought a Zoo ? The son Dylan is wearing a SCV tour shirt under his plaid shirt. The scene is about 28 minutes into the movie. I have this one and I want say of the top of my head it is the 83 or 84 tour shirt. I'll have to dig mine out and confirm.
  19. Doug Tholo Madison Dan Veerhusen Madison Jeff Fielder Cavaliers Al Go Blue Devils Mike Zapanta SCV
  20. 1977 DCI Championship poster. Still have it, but it is in pretty bad condition.
  21. Okay, so when I do drink, I don't during the work week, but this blew me away considering the dozens of times I've watched this DVD. Just to the left of the drum major podium along the fence at about the 46 yard line is a large cutout photo of Garth Algar from Wayne's World facing the audience. I don't remember this ever being discussed here, but I did a double take a number of times. It is very visible at the end of the opener and at the beginning of the Bottle Dance from a camera on side one stationed around the 30 yard line looking towards the 50. Is this in reference to Garth Ruhlin? And the reasoning behind it? At first, I thought it was a prop that was left behind by VK.
  22. Imo, DCI is committed to Indianapolis and vice versa be it 20k or 5k in attendance. I know a lot of fans/alumni who have or had attended Finals for years and they have slowly given up on Indy be it the fact it is in Indy every year. There is only so much to see and do there or anyplace if you have gone for at least three years in a row. I have noticed DCI is admitting and aware of this by constantly attempting to market new ideas to hopefully get undecided fans to attend. Some of these PR moves which actually are not all bad ideas include: The "official warmup area" in the park a mile or so from the stadium. The non top 12 parade on Saturday mornings which is been discontinued if I recall correctly. The DCI "2 pack seating package" which will get you the best seats for semis and finals, but for years and years, you needed to buy the Super 3 package the previous fall to guarantee great seats. This tells me there is a lot more great seats available than in years pre Indy. I know people who have bought this package and a lot of them are very happy with this package because they do not want to attend three nights of performances and they have usually had better seats for semis than finals. Last year, The world's biggest alumni party after semis which I attended for free thru a director, but as I thought about it, it wasn't that big a deal as there was just as many great gatherings going on at the bars and hotels near the stadium. I remember thinking this wouldn't have been worth paying for to get in. At the parade last year, DCI types were handing out flyers along the route. It pretty much stated to bring the flyer to the stadium with your local ID and get into finals for $10. Where those seats were located, I have no clue. But as with any business vying for entertainment dollars, just get em in the door and they should spend money on parking, concessions and souvies. Not a bad ploy to make the stadium look better attended than in previous years and at a huge discounted rate. I had told friends prior to 2004 that I thought I would never see DCI in Denver or points west in my lifetime again. But DCI did indeed made that happen and gave us another tease by going to Pasadena in 2007. But now that DCI has their HQ's in Indy and has modeled a touring schedule that doesn't need to change much from year to year (i.e. Denver, Minneapolis, San Antonio, Atlanta and Allentown on regular scheduled weekends) once again, I do not see DCI wanting or needing to move finals. As long as the PR dept continues to market new concepts to entice newbies to the activity and at the same time discourage the life long fans little by little from wanting to make an umpteenth trip to Indy, and as long as they make a modest profit from the other DCI sponsored shows to justify and cover the finals week budget, I'm afraid to say we may see a renewal in the Indy contract. But I sure hope I'm wrong.
