  1. It may well not have been, I just assumed it was. The voice sounded plausibly member age-ish to me, but regardless, it needs some fixing. The clips were quite short tonight at least, maybe they trimmed it.
  2. It may be; I too have only seen the play once, but that was a very long time ago. My point was more that they could've called the show Jesus Christ Superstar and been fine, instead of me scratching my head, trying to figure out everything that was "Judas" related.
  3. Here we go... We were down super low in the fourth row, but dead center, so I didn’t get much of a read at all in terms of drill. Perfect weather, and a friendly crowd. My only real show-related complaint was the bathroom lines. I felt especially bad for a few members of the Academy waiting ahead of us for the port-a-jons that had to give up ;) SHADOW: Messin’ with DNA! Very solid start! How often do you get to say that you saw a corps’ very first DCI performance?? The crowd gave them major love on their exit hearing that announcement. I’m not a drummer, but they seemed to have a particularly strong battery, and it was highlighted well. Also loved the drum colors! The DNA staircase ladders made things a bit cluttery; some of the performers climbing them looked nervous as well, which is never a good thing. I thought the judges underscored them by more than a little. This is one of those times I wish I had a full recap… MUSIC CITY: As Mel Brooks says, it’s good to be the King. Golden triangles looked fantastic behind the corps alongside their red uniforms, less so when they were elsewhere on the field. (You can tell how I feel about large props in general…) I think they really limited themselves with the whole “Coronation” theme. There’s only so much imperious strutting their “king” character could really do…but he just kept doing it. I was missing greater emotional range (and not just from him.) GENESIS: Hell hath no fury like a corps poorly scored. Speaking of emotional range, their narrator needs some serious work. I could tell she was trying, but it just wasn’t happening. That being said, there were a lot of positives for this show. A huge step up in demand and complexity in every regard. Give it a few more weeks, and I think the whole thing will click together quite nicely. PIONEER: Wait, was Joan of Arc Irish?? Brass sounded stronger than some of the previous Pioneer performances I’ve seen in years past. Their singer was quite talented, and integrated musically fairly well with the rest of the corps. Burning Joan of Arc at the stake gave the audience a nice set piece (as a different thread & poster would call it ;) to latch on to, but the rest less so. PACIFIC CREST: Hammer Time! The confidence and poise they marched with went a very long way in differentiating them from Pioneer, as did their staging. A solid & enjoyable performance all around, I don’t have much more to say. ACADEMY: Corpse, corps, cores, course, coarse… Their first big hit felt louder than the previous five corps combined, and the brass carried that quality and energy throughout the rest of the show. Fantastic staging, and what I’ll call “entertainment value.” Their theme was coherent enough for us to see and understand it, but didn’t get overly bogged down in trying to create complicated narrative details. Crowd loved it! BLUE STARS: “La Reve.” French for: “The Reve.” Possibly my favorite, their performance level was on fire tonight! Crazy high energy and fast moving, with every section really locked in. I was a bit nervous before they begin, calling your show “The Dream” gives you license to try just about anything thematically, but they elected wisely to keep what was happening on the field fairly straightforward. Hints of wonder, of conflict, and of growth. Gorgeous ballad. CAROLINA CROWN: Excuse me Sir, your horse seems to have sprouted gears… Brass was wild as always, they attacked everything with fantastic skill, gusto, and attention to detail. My problems with this show were all design related, not performance. So here’s what I got from it; The Old West. A stagecoach. Some sort of attempted heist. And….that was about it. The rest just wasn’t communicated to me clearly at all. What’s “Relentless” about all this? I wasn’t sure where the focus was frequently. I don’t know what they’ll be changing or adding before the season’s over, but I’m hoping for at least a partial makeover. I don’t intend any of this to detract from the performers though, who had a terrific night, especially their guard, which nailed tons of super exposed tosses. MADISON SCOUTS: Jesus Christ Superstar 2.0? So here’s my only catch with this one. It seemed to me like they wanted to give us music from Jesus Christ Superstar, but didn’t want it to be another straight-up Jesus Christ Superstar show. So they tried giving it an “angle” of sorts by focusing on Judas, (or at least intending to - some of it communicated very clearly from the guard and staging, but other parts didn’t.), but I don’t think they necessarily needed to. The music selection and arrangements were unique enough that it felt like a fresh JCS show, not a rehash of an old one. That being said…A heck of a night for the home team. No one works the crowd like the Scouts, and this was their night and place to shine. Crazy intensity from the brass, I don’t know how any of them had chops for their encore. Well done!

  5. Just got home, awesome show. Shadow had a really strong start, how often do you get to say that you saw a corp's inaugural DCI show?? Academy was fun, Blue Stars were on fire tonight, and Scouts wowed the crowd as usual. (Slightly) more detailed review to follow.
  6. Whatever happened to having the show in Camp Randall? I think it's been a few years since it's been there.
  7. Shoes announcing caption winners would be a fascinating turn of events. Something like the Sorting Hat, maybe? The Scoring Shoe?
  8. (I've got no ill will towards the mods if this comes down, but here's to trying!.;) " **** You! A Tribute to Expletives." Opener: **** Happens Ballad: Mother****** Percussion Feature: Dropped my ******* stick, ****it! Closer: Thank God this ******* piece of **** is ******* over! Epilogue: What's our **** score, you ********? What?! **** *** *** ******* ** **** *!!?! @$^!#!
  9. I'm think more corps should be honest and call their shows ABstRACtion . We're pretty much already there...
  10. I want to see a corps intentionally try for the lowest score possible. They can call it "Go for Zero!" Only caveats I'm putting on it are that they can't deliberately break rules just to get there via penalties, still have to field 150ish marchers, and must actually play something while moving. (I imagine sitting there motionless in silence for 12.5 minutes would in fact score you a zero.)
  11. I remember there was some minor brouhaha about this particular set in Carolina Crown's 2006* on here. Emphasis on the word MINOR. There were a few people chuckling at a vague, possibly suggestive shape, many squinting and not seeing anything other then an amorphous drill form, and zero people writing angry letters to Crown or DCI about it demanding sanctions of some kind. I'm making a conjecture here, but I'm willing to bet no one witnessing it live audibly gasped and shouted "HOW DARE THEY!" I feel really bad for the KSU band...If the university really wanted to cover their butts and issue an apology, sure, whatever, but I think that the fine is especially outrageous. $5,000? That could've been scholarship money instead. *Edited with the correct date. Thank you Cadevilina Crown, I should've been able to figure that one out! Whoops...
  12. And therein lies the dilemma. Do we reward the best show by the end of the season or the best show of the season? (I'm not advocating in favor of averaging myself, just posing the question.)
  13. Quite true, I hadn't thought of that. I guess I'll modify my wish to say that I'd rather hear tapes from earlier in the season.
  14. I caught that, too! :) Honestly, I feel like I didn't learn all that much from the GE tapes. Even I could give comments like "Thank you, mellos!" or "Great job, pit!" The majority of comments seemed to be in that vein, with a handful of exceptions. What would really be enlightening to me would be a GE tape of a corps that is not doing as well. What sort of critique and advice a judge gives a corps that's not being as successful would tell me much more about what sort of things they're looking for and at. Much (though not all) of those tape just told me that Bluecoats were doing, well...great.
  15. Fantastic pics! Any idea what the cyan flag Madison is carrying is? A number of members seem to be wearing something that color too.
  16. With $100 million? $49.5 million to bribe enough corps directors to eliminate the maximum age rule for me and me alone. Then one lucky director gets another $49.5 million from me as I bribe my way into their corps. What about the remaining $1 million? That's probably how much I'd need in PT and other health repair costs from marching a season these days...Come to think of it, me on the field right now might do more harm to drum corps then $100 million could undo...So scratch the whole thing!
  17. 2016 will be a particularly rough year in DCI... It will be discovered through BD's Benjamin Button themed show next year that Clara, the girl in the yellow dress, was in fact 108 years old, thus revealing that, yes, all those claiming they cheated with her in 2015 were correct...just for the wrong reason. Cadets will be switching to an intensely reflective mirror-like uniform, but will be penalized at show after show for accidentally starting fires on the field with them. The Colt's show will be so radio-play narration intensive that they'll forget to put musicians on the field. Bluecoats will add the next obvious step in electronic instrument evolution; placing hidden microphones in the stands and playing them back through on-field amps. Audiences will be quite displeased with the dramatic increase in nonsensical narration until they realize that it's themselves talking. Following their success with their Paris themed show, Phantom will continue their tribute to great cities of the world with an homage to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Pioneer's show, "Leviticus," will be considerably less entertaining than this year's.
  18. 1. Bluecoats: I'll be regretting I missed the experience of seeing them live for years to come. Thought my brain might explode out my ears during that last push. (In a good way.) 2. SCV: Fast, sexy drill, music arrangements were both sophisticated & utterly engaging. 3. Crown: The whole package. 4. Cadets: 10? Uniforms? Whatever...The gravitas & demand of the opener alone gave me near-continual chills. They completely dominated the field with their stage presence from start to finish. 5. Blue Knights: I'm biased to be sure, but they managed to do something utterly different & rather enigmatic while still taking the audience along with them on the ride. Blue Devils were seriously growing on me by the end, too. Layers upon layers of effect & nuance on top of that out-of-this world level of performance we've come to expect.
  19. FOR SALE: Herd of several dozen anthropomorphic horses.* Skilled in modern dance, amplified singing, and dressage. *CAUTION: All are highly proficient with rifles. Seller not responsible for injuries.Lassoing in slow motion not recommended.
  20. That's awesome...I'm blaming the camera work on completely missing that!
