  1. Well myself and my son noticed the overamping of individuals killed the dynamic diversity. It is harder to have the wow moments musically without dynamic contrast. I think the trombones down from were meant as a wow moment and maybe would have been so if we had a nice soft delicate moment beforehand. I also agree with the comments about the show not working well together visually and musically so that is a major handicap and yes the percussion score has to compliment but I haven't really looked at the show to evaluate that nor would be qualified to really as I'm a brass guy.
  2. not really much difference between being 11th or 12th is there? They made finals for another year but a close call to hopefully wake them up to design needs.
  3. You are absolutely right though, the show should be for the kids but it's usually designed for the judges. I feel more the responsibility to have a show for the kids that the audience loves and that makes it enjoyable for the kids.
  4. ok so as it now stands nobody has stated an exact reason why bd was better than phantom in 2008 and why phantom didn't deserve it so let's go on the assumption that the judges scored phantom higher because they felt the corps achieved a level of competence and delivered a show that evoked emotion and appeal to the audience in a way that deserved high enough marks to win. Also if you know J.D. then you know he and Paul Rennick know they are capable of a high level of performance themselves and were not afraid to do it in Rockford. since 2008 was 10 years ago maybe we can move on to this year.
  5. yeah , pointless discussion about scoring past years and I don't think J.D. left because he got away with one in 2008.
  6. Bottom line in any year we can only give an opinion because it's impossible to give facts on why one should beat another , most of it is subjective unless you want to go back to the tick system.
  7. So just to clarify , the props are supposed to just be things they interact with in the new world not really a transporting thing. That info came from staff. The kids are really wonderful as always and was a proud moment to play with them as an alum. I assure you their efforts don't have them where they are but are probably saving them so far. I don't lay this all at Will's feet either, I think it's some good arranging getting the phantom sound but it doesn't inspire but that may be in part to the failure of the concept. As far as show design I like the idea but it fails to come across to anyone I know and that is a team thing and not just Will. I definitely agree that some experienced guidance is needed and soon before completely becoming undone.
  8. My experience with Yamaha and king trumpets is the Yamaha is darker and better in my opinion down low. The king is brighter and better throughout , especially in the upper range. My favorite over both though is my Bach Strad.
  9. I thought Phantom had the most complete package of sight, sound and theatrical elements. Right at the top of my all time favorites.
  10. I'll have to remember to cheer for the other team when they score at the next football game I go to. First I'll make sure my insurance is paid up. :P
  11. That was the artistry of it though wasn't it , keeping it in tune and sounding great together. You had the ability to cut loose but you had to know how far to go with it and make it sound impressive. I like the ensemble sound of the bflat but I really liked the edge you could get with the g horns. It really was an honor to get that g horn and play it for the first time. I played sop and yes I did notice a difference in pitch but had no problem switching. I also felt it was much easier to play upper register on the DEG.
  12. I wonder if the original poster was just upset that his corps wasn't well recieved even though they won. The crowd went wild for a few and I was most particularly surprised at the response to Phantom, obviously overwhelmingly the fan favorite. Of course other corps could get this respnse too if they were given a show made for the audience. Of course Phantom has always tried to please the audience first an the heck with the judges. I have never seen a show booed , only the scores at retreat. Talking to other audience members that night I only heard dissatisfaction at the scores. Nobody said anything about the kids not giving a good effort.
