  1. Yeah - I feel you on that one. 1970 Jacksonville, FL. Similar scenario. Ugly for a bunch of 12 to 17 year olds from the most diverse city (NYC) in America. We never knew what hit us most of the bus ride down was like that ... until we got to New York's 6th borough - Miami! Well Puppet we lived through it in some ways with corps who didn't take members of one race or another. The neighborhoods we lived in were segregated for the most part which did create some of that separation yet most drum corps "seemed" inclusive. I would sit on the bus and think about odd things (there weren’t cassette players even back). What would it be like if someone who wasn't Asian wanted to join the LA Chinese? Did CMCC have Caucasian members? Were the Royalaires predominantly Jewish because of where they came from? Oh to be young again.
  2. Again, there isn't anything you can't find on this thread except who stole the SCV flag and the colonel’s secret receipt.
  3. I will check tonight but I think I got that from corps reps and it's a PDF.
  4. Holy Crap, SCV was 11th in M&M on the #1 side. No wonder they were 3rd. Over 2 points from Madison in 1 caption.
  5. Good ones Bill, especially the smoking on the bus. I forgot that one. We also had to field strip the cigs when we were done. Then there was the waitresses who refused to wait on us because they knew someone was going to bail without paying the check.
  6. Ah yes, forgot the lines at the pay phones to call home, (or the significant other) you left behind. Had to make sure your new tour bus mate wasn't around when those calls were made.
  7. and stretching was hurry up and run to the starting line.
  8. I actually drove and taught both 27th and ECJ. I do think 2-7 had a member or two drive short shifts and I'm pretty sure they were not the only one. I remember on one tour, 84 I think, the kids on my bus set up a schedule to keep me awake. One night, one of the snare drummers (Rick Carr) came up to me and said what should I talk about? I said anything you want, tell me about yourself. He said: "Well I was born on a Tuesday....." Great drummer, funny funny guy.
  9. When we think back, it's pretty amazing what was allowed when we marched in the 70s and 80s. By all accounts the world wasn't such a bad place and our parents weren’t outraged with what we went through, in fact they accepted it and waited at shows to cheer us on. However, we know certain things would not be tolerated now, by the members OR the parents. Just think about: • The bus rides: Always breaking down, no AC, no bathrooms, one driver for 14 hours • Housing sites: Sleeping outside in a parking lot because there was no housing, sleeping in a basement of a closed church, no showers (cold showers were a welcome surprise) • Practice fields: They had more holes, bugs and no rest room facilities • Food: Well we all know many a corps that had dry cereal, BP&J and stale chips or a ham sandwich for a meal. The norm was at least 1 meal a day was on your own. Corps today would fold or be turned in to DCI for that. What did you go through, or know of?
  10. I know what you mean. On the right is a motor home. I wonder if that is Roman's? Everythime I ever saw him he had one. Also, the female photographer. Is that Jane Boulan? Ed Ferguson said she was a great photographer but I never met her.
  11. I sent an email but it bounced back. Paul I am interested in 2 mellos, 2 sops, 1 3V Euph and a 3V contra. Can you tell me what you have left? Looking for the best looking horns, I have a repair shop that can fix a brace or a leak etc. I also have a bari case if you have a nice horn without a case. Dale Powers dale@wgi.org
  12. 2 are sold, 2 are left. $150 each free shipping.
  13. I'm not sure if this one has been posted yet. It's SCV 1982
  14. I think both Oakland Crusaders and Senica Optimist were mergers. Crossmen were a merger of the 507 Hornets and the Keystone Regiment.
  15. Yes. In fact we received a note today that the parade can be watched live. The site is: www.pactv.org
  16. That will be nice to see. Ralph is a legend for sure in this activity. Weather is going to be great. Partly Cloudy High 56°F Huge parade that is only 90 minutes long and 9 drum corps at night in a very intimate venue. Come on down, have some lobsta, have a drink at your seat watching drum corps, Alumni corps are so much fun!!!!
  17. Love that stadium, pine trees and skating rink in the back ground. I think Anaheim Kingsmen won 74 World Open there without winning a caption.
  18. Weather forcast is for mid 50s, great day for a parade. The crowds are excellent and there are so many groups in this parade (including 9 drum corps) it's worth the trip. Hope to see everyone in Plymouth.
  19. A couple from MA IC Reveries Blue Angles Legion Vanguard Wilmington Crusaders Beverly Cardnals = North Star Spectra + Heightsmen = Alliance
  20. Here is a great picture of the Defenders in 1977 at CYO Nationals. We were on second or third, in the daylight obviously, and look at the crowd.
