  1. And yet... I read a lot of WWII history. Historians nowadays will point to logistics, industrial output, population, etc. and say, in effect, that the war with won by America the very moment Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Foregone conclusion. But it took a heck of a lot of people who believed that it was up to them, personally, to contribute to winning that war, sometimes at the cost of their own lives, for the United States to defeat Japan in World War II. The frontline participants have their place In the story still. Maybe it's just part of the picture, but it's in the picture nonetheless. Seems true in drum corps too. The kids have to do the work and perform. Yes, they're the most talented, but they still have to do it. And it does matter what they do. You can't tell me that if BD's drumline isn't nails on finals night 2019 that we're not talking about the defending champion Bluecoats. It's something that's planned for in October but has to happen on the second Saturday of August.
  2. I don't know about abstract performance art, but I've been saying something like this for years, about drum corps and other things: Don't tell me how to feel or what to think - show me what you have and move me. That's what the best drum corps shows do. And it seems as if most of the corps this year have delivered. For a while at the end of last decade it seemed like some drum corps had forgotten how to send a message without manipulative techniques. I would love to see a corps come out some year without a show title, without a show explanation, without telling me at all what to think and feel, and simply take me somewhere. This can be done, and it doesn't mean eschewing narration completely. It means enough clarity in the design, enough energy in the performance, and enough trust in the audience to make extraneous words unnecessary.
  3. I don't think that would happen. I'm pretty sure DCI gave the YEA! organization a fait accompli when the whole thing went down: either GH goes or The Cadets go. He accepted a conviction by pleading no contest to misdemeanor charges. Any corps that hired him would be risking far more than he'd be able to give them. Really the only thing his social media does is allow him to play the martyr/genius and wax philosophical about things, which is what he liked to do with the Cadets, as far as I know. It's not a legitimate avenue back in to staff/administration work with a drum corps.
  4. Still dream that I'm showing up at Crossmen camp and I'm so far overage it's amazing no one's noticing. Know I have to tell them I can't march but am having trouble doing it. Been having the same dream for nearly thirty years.
  5. Yes to Cadets 2013. Any tape with Prosperie is good value. 06 Phantom has just been reposted on YouTube and is fantastic not only for the comments but for clarity of sound. In both tapes he talks about compositional choices as well as points out performance nuances which really gives some context to the number given.

  7. Nothing in Western Pa. Glad it's available at home (fingers crossed for a solid stream).

  9. Hearing a lot of silence from INT's camp. (Yes, I did.)
  10. A go-to for me when I need a pick-me-up. Have listened several times over the past few days, actually.
  11. Of the three, I only marched the US Open - after its heyday, in 1992, but anyhow... Shorty Bartholomew told us that it was an honor for us to go on last at the US Open. After the show, I went to the track to hear the Blue Devils victory concert. Awesome. US Open for me.
