  1. Can I resurrect this thread from 11 years ago? Just attended my first DCI show of 2017 in Denton a few days ago. I was shocked and a bit miffed at how many corps were NOT wearing head wear. All because of Bluecoats from last year?? Please Corps Directors, for the love of tradition, I beg you, please don't go in that direction.
  2. Didn't know about the gala but this begs the question then of when did the schedule come out for the Moonlight Classic and when did the gala get scheduled? I really loathe when a corps misses a show, especially if they are in the area.
  3. Does anyone have a problem with BD and SCV not showing up to their own state's capital show?
  4. Is this the thread where we guess how DCI will slot the corps for the 2017 season?
  5. So.....is everybody good with the slotting?
  6. It actually is DCI's fault because they took over this show from the Cavaliers. I spoke with Dan Acheson about it and he said it was too late (at that time) to do anything about the traffic backup off the highway but that the local sheriff would have traffic control for the end of the show. It was just a matter of asking local law enforcement to help with traffic control and that would have helped with a lot of the back up. As for the parking issue, I have no idea what happened with that. People paid their $5 and then there were no parking spots in the lot they were guided to. So, they had to back track to another lot near the waterpark, causing the traffic to back up even more. Again, that is a DCI planning issue, not the host's. People were incensed about it, especially the older folks that had to walk all that way.
  7. First show of the season for me tonight. A very quick synopsis. Because of work obligations, I wasn't able to see Mandarins or Colts. My vantage point was also poor because I was fairly low and between 40-30. That being said, my favorite corps of the night was SCV. Great uniform look and first powerful and compact sound of the night for me. Perhaps it was because they were the first corps after INT. I especially appreciated the high mark time company front (Thank you Jeff Fiedler!) Also liked the flags behind the back drops in backfield. Also liked the brass playing back there as well. My impressions of the other corps are just too basic but I will comment on what stuck out in my mind. Love Pat Metheny's First Circle for BK. The closing theme to the show should be a much faster tempo and the marching should also be faster. Rotating circles may be too obvious here, but I was imagining Star doing their circles in '91 during "Roman Images." Cavies weren't as bad as I thought they were going to be. Seemed like a typical Cavies show. I agree somewhat that the cloaks blur the forms, but not to the point of distraction. Was told there are about 85 new young rookies in this corps. They seemed solid to me. Cadets didn't astound like in years past. Again I was low, so I totally missed on the GE from up high. A friend who was up there was amazed at the sound going back and forth on the field. Not sure what to make of BD. Again, not as horrid as some have suggested, but I agree to some extent that the show is out there. I love the PR version of the music from 2000, so I'm a little biased. I just don't get all the poles on stands. This show made me begin to despise props. Thought I would like Crown more than I did. Just didn't feel it as much. But I did like the brass book a lot. Nice control and sound. Guard was solid as well. Not a fan of narration, so it detracts for me. Spirit, not a bad show. Like the theme. Nice brass moments throughout. Guard nice job. Xmen, not enthralled by the theme. Some nice moments though. Blue Stars, also not sure about the theme. The corps seemed flat, but going on early will do that. Snare line especially looked like they were struggling to get thru their drill. Not sure what was going on outside the stadium, but fans had the hardest time getting in. Traffic and parking was apparently a disaster. According to some it took over an hour just to exit of the highway and finally make it into the stadium. And DCI charging $5 for parking and then not having parking spots for those people was a huge blunder. Fans were angry by the time they got to the gate. Also the general seating down low was also mishandled. People had specific sections for their general seating tickets. But when they got to their sections, there were no seats because people just sat anywhere. Reserved seating was sold out, but even people that had those tickets found people sitting in their seats. I would have been angry too had I paid big bucks for my tickets and then couldn't get to the stadium in a reasonable time frame.
  8. Can we skip the winter and spring and go straight into summer?
  9. Excellent photos! I think you have a few of the former Trooper I met, Ben Aird. Nicely done.
  10. Saw The US Marine Drum and Bugle Corps at the Texas State Fair today (10-08-2012). Very entertaining and just so great to hear drum corps again in the off season. After their performance, the crowd was able to interact with the members, and I was able to meet up with 2 Trooper alumni. Also met a former Madison Scout as well. One of the highlights of the show was when the drum major spoke to the crowd and read questions that were written down by the audience previous to the start of the show. In 2 of the questions read, the person asked about the "Marine Band" and the drum major got testy and said, "This isn't a band, it's a Drum and Bugle Corps!" Loved that! Oh, and by the way, The US Marine Drum and Bugle Corps uses 2 valve G bugles. If it's good enough for them, should be good enough for DCI!
  11. Well, when the Allen HS band has around 700 members, that's a lot of family members.
  12. Please, oh please, oh please Lake Highlands High School, move your DCI show to Allen and share the proceeds. The fans have suffered enough in that tight, cramped stadium with no parking.
  13. Whoops! I guess my good intentions of sharing photos in the Teal Sound thread is strictly prohibited by DCI, the NFL, and Major League Baseball. This policy really needs to be changed. I have a ton of pictures over the years from every show I've attended, including the first corps off the line, that I think most members would enjoy seeing.
  14. "Go Gahhhfieeee" "TAKE EM TO THE BEACH SUNCOAST!!!" Classic yells from back in the day. Still makes me smile. But a little off topic. I really am not liking when the stadium announcer times his (Dan Potts for example) delivery of the performing corps on the field right before a big hit in the music. It just really takes away the enjoyment of the opening set for me, especially if it's the first time to see the corps. "From Concord, CA...........THE BLUE DEVILS!" BAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!
  15. I asked a similar question when I was in college and had an opportunity to do a student exchange to Japan for a year after my ageout year in DCI. In fact, a fellow corps member gave me this advice. He said it's just a year out of your life and the opportunities you'll reap will vastly outweigh anything you would do by staying home and finishing my degree on time. I took his advice and went and it was the best decision I could have made at the time. And the funny thing about all that was, the university I attended in Japan was home to the only drum corps in the country affiliated with a college, the Royal Kilties. Who knows what opportunities will open up by marching your age out. Good luck in your decision.
  16. So, is it possible to get the results of the final totals? Still don't know who won and by how much. Thanks!
  17. Not to sidetrack the OP, but, how many fans showed up to Finals in the mid 80s? I could've sworn there were 30-40K fans that showed in Madison and KC. Am I way off? But I am surprised to read that only 15K fans have showed to Finals in recent years. I always assumed it was the same as back in the day.
  18. Could it be the judge is using more of a "tick" system or is it the dreaded "slotting?" And you don't necessarily have to have a drop to be judged critically. You could have a toss that a guard member doesn't quite catch correctly or not in time with the music, etc that could bring down the score.
  19. Wow, Charlie must be a multimillionaire. Looks like Troopers are out of the race. Unless....
