  1. yup... and the "T" stands for Tahou... it was a legal necessity not to use the family name...
  2. So sorry to hear this... I have lost a good friend and a great musician and educator...
  3. let me see what I can find... I'm sure Nanci is fine... we all still love her...
  4. I'll be glad to help... but I nominate Linda for Queen... although I'm going to miss those tiny feet (long story) back to finishing my 4th novel...
  5. Just because... so sad... this is like losing an old friend RIP Whoville
  6. As an educated outsider looking in... I didn't even ask or hear the figures on the success or lack thereof for the internet feed... here are a couple things I do know Not doing an internet feed will most likely have no effect on the attendance... people will come... or they won't If for whatever other reason they don't come, a few of that group might have bought the inet pack BUT The inet pack would do much better in 17 when Kidsgrove comes back... Drum Corps Europe seems to support that type of thing more... they just need a reason like supporting KS This issue is way beyond DCA (Or DCI for that matter) The entire entertainment media is running so freaking scared they are making stupid decisions... Trying to make up lost revenue from record sales (sorry CD) from high schools, colleges and drum corps is a crime... eventually, they will #### off enough voters (bando parents) that congress will step in...but that will take a long time... and we all know how much anyone wants to get involved in politics right now... next year, maybe some rich influential high school band parent will pick up the cause... the industry screwing the kids and the non profits is throwing the baby out with the bath water... but Hollywood is running so ###### scared they have no freaking idea what they're doing... All I know is not having INET feed will not kill DCA... there are bigger issues than that However, having the INET feed at a LOSS reducing the money distributed to the corps - could be devastating Unlike DCI, the annual revenue from DCA is often the difference between survival and failure... Would any of you insist on having the INET feed if it meant one or two of the 20 or so corps didn't exist next year??? This all sounds like someone made a wise decision.
  7. www.worlddrumcorpshof.org Special congrats to DCI Guru Dan Acheson - obviously well deserved... Also, appreciate the special recognition given to Stevie Gadd - arguably the best drummer ever... who I marched with in the 60's with Rochester Crusaders... I'm sure Colin Campbell is pleased and from high above Fuzzy Falzone is smiling down... When you watch any of Stevie's Videos, those in the know will think one name: Bobby Thompson... Colin taught the Bobby Thompson method and Stevie learned well... Rick Roger's election is most appropriate not only for his playing, instructing and arranging but his contribution to the design of marching percussion can not be ignored. It's a shame it is posthumous as he was taken way too young.
  8. Rivals on the field, Friends off the field... Ray was a true gentleman... He will be missed by all...
  9. Oh we recognize Long Island as part of New York... it's the Metro New York area we could do without... and yes, thank you for Sun/White Sabers/Excelsior holding up New York's long standing drum corps history
  10. thanks for the reminder Fran YES... big congrats to Frank Dorrite 2016 DCI Hall of Fame Class
  11. So - as usual - it's all Frankie Dorrite's fault? lol
  12. There is NOTHING in dca rules that specify lower or upper age requirements. PERIOD!!! It's all aged... Individual corps who are smart enough to deal with legal ramifications can have any rules they like... and require any medical/liability releases necessary. And not to shock anyone, but this is NOTHING new... 50 years ago (I was there) corps I was with had minimum age requirements... one of the common variances was that "under 18 allowed if a family member over 18 is a member to accept responsibility." All aged is All aged, but when it comes to individual corps... it's up to each corps...
  13. true Fran and don't forget they soon had some snot nosed kid playing a pretty decent horn too... What was his name? oh yeah Wayne Downey What was his first year with the corps?
  14. I'd say Costello-imposed... considering the effort put forth by both parties at the meeting brought by Doc Sebastianelli and featuring a major American Legion peace maker to bring the parties together - which basically meant Lefty and Cos in the same room... The truce brokered in this meeting brought both Cabs and Brigadiers to the '66 DCA championship and this uneasy truce was followed by the choice of the one man they both respected to take over as President for the '67 season, Vince Bruni - this move toward an acceptable neutral party guaranteed that the fledgling organization that was DCA would survive and grow.
  15. Thanks for the mention Keith... I'll share a little known fact... For the 4 years I was director of Cru, everyone kept asking: "How do you survive with two top corps in the same city? Especially since Empire is slugging their way to their first DCA Championship?" The answer was simple - communications, sound advice and keep it different... To accomplish this, I did something quite interesting that many would raise their eyebrows at... Almost weekly, I sought out the advice of the most knowledgeable drum corps person I knew - Vince Bruni. I would meet with him in his office or go to lunch and we'd discuss the direction both corps was taking and - most of the time at least - I would take his advice and sage direction. It was he who told me bluntly: "You must offer a difference - different style, different music and different schedule - otherwise, I'll kick your butt all over the field. Porkchop!" Some of this led to what I called our band director image... While Empire was out recruiting the heck out of the major high school marching band programs, I was out recruiting their band directors and promising them they would never have to worry about babysitting their band kids in my corps. Obviously, it worked - and brought us considerable success. Had we been able to practice the same hours that Empire practiced, we may well have had both Rochester Corps pushing for the DCA Championship, but not having the rehearsal schedule for that we were still able to stay in the top 5 and impress audiences everywhere...
  16. lol man... what a tough audience first there's no one here and now the few here are picky picky So John, why are there no signs on I-90 that say speed limit 40? They all say 65mph for the limit... and on rare occasions you will see a reminder sign "Minimum speed 40mph" just thinkin' out loud
  17. It says size LIMIT - so I assumed he was discussing the 65 which is a limit... as someone said, any more and you are open class - consequently it's a limit... The 35 minimum performers for any corps is NOT technically a "LIMIT" it is just that - a minimum number of performers to be eligible for a DCA contest... Glad to help the semantics of the situation... Just mark me - "Old and Retired" .
  18. 65 not counting non playing drum majors and A sections unless this has been changed recently...
  19. sad... no post since 1/22/16 a million and a half views, almost 38000 posts and Whoville just wastes away... I'm as guilty as the next... just sad that's all....
  20. While DCI mourns the loss of another of its founding fathers... Bill Howard - long time power behind Madison Scouts... and we send our best to Madison, DCI and his family... Great man... but it again brings to mind that DCI owes a lot to DCA... Bill Howard marched Rochester Crusaders and was a good friend of Vince Bruni's... The advice and recommendations given by the leaders of DCA who by 1972 found themselves on sound footings, was critical to the success of DCI in the early years. He will be missed, but his legacy lives on... both in Madison Scouts and DCI
  21. The scary part is that I would be willing to do it but someone would have to remind me how to post pictures on here... I think I have the tools to do it, just need some friendly reminder Nanci showed me years ago... but ONLY if her majesty approves... after Christmas I'm starting on my next novel which will take up much of my time. It requires much research as it's a Civil War Story - and civil war buffs demand accuracy... That being said... I can still check in when I take a break from writing... G G Grandfather Captain Henry N. Grimes, 49th Infantry, Army of Tennessee, CSA whose story I'm writing would agree to that
  22. Ah well... I wasn't implying that the problem was with her majesty, queen of the tiny feet... just so few left and I'm guilty as well, as I only peek here once in a while and spend all day on FB... It's also a natural part of getting old and being retired for real from the activity... It was fun following Kidsgrove this year (again)... but that's all I did - hung out with old friends... Guess I have to get my kicks now when I can - following the exploits of my son-in-law as Mr. Mascari expands both his writing/teaching and adjudicating... Hell, for the first time in my life, (remember, I go back to the Crusader Rabbit days and even the parking lot at Clifton HS 1972 - with a tip of the hat to Ray Priester and the gang) I might have to root on the Skyliners... they will certainly have upgraded percussion arrangements this coming year... the last time I rooted for Sky, Pepe was still picking his "seat"... and we (Cru) were playing "Devil at 4 O'clock" off the line... Best wishes for the Holidays to all in whoville
  23. no posts since 12 November? does this mean 37776 number of posts is it? another Facebook victory? Sad
  24. I tend to agree with Kamarag... I guess I can claim to being somewhat an expert on all aged, weekend warrior corps... I believe that the success of these corps has been by and large due to a blend of youthful talent and sage experience. By not dotting their positions with an occasional veteran, who knows what is required to accomplish a quality product with minimal rehearsal time, they are - to this point - limiting their success somewhat. The key to this has been looking at their deficiencies and - although it must be stated that each year they improve and were most successful this year which I put to bringing in Rich Templin with his vast knowledge of how to make an all aged corps work - but still performance visual has been a decided negative... That being said, I expect them to continue to improve and continue to contend... quality programs with quality teachers should work... especially with the influx of teachers who are used to what is necessary to accomplish without 7 day a week rehearsals... They are already élite... further success is inevitable... but I repeat... this success would come faster if they had more experienced dotted in the program for the younger less experienced to lean on and learn from... again... their age requirements are a disadvantage...
  25. In the earliest performances beginning with the one on the streets of Allentown... there was no money... but from day one of charging admission like Andy said almost 100% of the funds went to the alumni corps... so effectively "Grumpy" if you're trying to make out like DCA refused to pay the alumni corps... you're simply wrong... Never was there a charge for an Alumni contest when almost all of the gate didn't go back to the corps... Yes, I was one of those running the show...
