  1. Then I, for one, must have misread the post.
  2. Heck, I’m 62 & still don’t know what I want to do when I grow up.
  3. When we were 15, we thought we had life all figured out. But when we were 30, we knew that this wasn’t the case.
  4. Was it said whether those waiting in the wings were planning to sue Cadets, or could they be planning to sue other Corps?
  5. I think the best chance is for key designers/instructors to move as a group to an already established Corps. And for a lower-placing Corps w/ some $, this may be a way to get a score boost. SCV is sort of doing this currently- not a whole lot of vets, but a first rate instruction & design staff. We’ll see how it works.
  6. I was in Okinawa in 1995 when 3 Marines & a Navy corpsman R-d the 12yr old. They ended up serving 6.5 years in Japanese prison (which is much more strict than US prison). I think this is what led to the SOFA change. But I would also see US military members w/ very young Japanese girls off base, but I suppose they were 13+. And then there were the ones who went on leave to Philippines or Thailand. But just because it’s legal doesn’t mean it’s right.
  7. Agree - it wasn’t sold behind Target alongside a guy selling meth
  8. OK. And if caught F then straight to bus station & sent home. Even if it is the day of semi finals and the star soloist (with the entire show built around them) who gets booted.
  9. Was specifically asking how SSI addresses athlete with athlete allegations. We’ve seen several different approaches since 2018 (& before) yet the problem persists.
  10. Ok. So say we do this & it fixes staff/member issues. What about member/member (which is what was alleged to happen in several recent incidents)? Not trying to be difficult, but it seems to me that there needs to be more than just SSI. Or perhaps I don’t understand SSI well enough.
  11. As I said in SoA thread- many if not most youth sports leagues have minimum & age requirements. A 16 yr old isn’t allowed to be in a T-ball league
  12. Raising age to 18 would mean everyone is a legal adult & able to consent thus getting rid of adult-minor ‘consensual’ (where minor is not legally allowed to consent) problems. There would still be the problem of non-consent staff & member as well as non-consent member & member assaults. Raising age to 18 could help. Not a 100% solution, but at least a partial solution.
  13. Different youth sports leagues have age (both minimum & maximum) requirements. So could DCI - Open Class (say) age 14 through 17; when you hit 18 then you are in World Class. There would need to be cut off dates, just like there are currently for hitting age 22 during the season.
  14. DCI communications less than clear? Inconceivable! <<sarcasm off>>
  15. Open Class (with age capped at 17) is for kids. Like Trix, but different.
  16. I would keep the upper age at 21. If all members are over 18, that solves the problem of consensual acts between adults. But it doesn’t solve the problem of non-consensual assaults.
  17. Ideally you want to catch the predators before they act. But you don’t know that they are predators until they act. So, Corps put procedures in place to make it hard for the predators. But if a predator is determined, they will exploit the flaw in the procedures. What we don’t know is how many less-determined predators were stopped by the procedures - it is difficult to measure prevention. If there was 100% accurate reporting of assaults we could watch the numbers, but we all know that reporting is less than 100% accurate (how much less is open to debate).
  18. Posted abt an hour ago Spirit of Atlanta not getting any better. I’m sure we all recall the incident that happened not too long ago that resulted in spirit of Atlanta being punished for misconduct and being placed on a probation. However since I’ve marched last year, girls I marched with, and I can name numerous, were sexually assaulted and had sexual relations while they were underaged with legal adults. Legal adults who were also forced to sign the safe sport contract. Pure trauma is all that induces. Nobody is talking about it, nobody is fixing it, is this a normal drump corps thing? I would say not…
  19. I think the SoA lawsuit is much more likely to impact corporate DCI than Cadets. I suspect we’ll find out.
  20. But for that to happen Corps directors will need to give up some control. Good luck with that.
  21. The thing with the laws is that any incident must be reported to local authorities asap after it occurs so it can be investigated before evidence disappears, witnesses memory fades, etc. Add in that it may take a young person some time to process what happened, the Corps could be miles down the road by then. I think a solution is for each Corps to bring along an adult ‘member contact rep’ that members are encouraged to seek out asap if they even think something may have happened. The reps are not Corps employees, they report to something like a DCI Independent Inspector General, and have the authority to call law enforcement and secure access to victim plus evidence independent of Corps management. Yes this would cost money. But lawsuits also cost money.
