  1. I believe Todd Ryan was their M & M guy (or whatever that is called today) in the years you mention. Probably the reason you were amazed at the way they moved.
  2. The topic name is pretty funny to me because most of the corps listed are not "barely heard of" for me but rather a what corps did you march against list. alankarls list of the corps in upstae Wisconsin and the UP is missing a couple from that time, the Hurley Ambassadors, the Blue Knights from Ironwood, the Brass Regiment from Park Falls, and the Durand Silver Sabers all girl drum corps. The Sundowner's first year was 1971 after the Eau Claire Boys added girls midway through the 1970 season. If I remember correctly there was a woman named Annie Mixdorff (or something like that) that ran "Parade Specialties" which was a small Wisconsin circuit with the Parade/Contest format in small towns. Maybe the vast Knowledge of Northern Thunder could help me out with the facts.
  3. I know that there were a few alumni (if not more) that decided not to march in 1976 after attending the first one or 2 Scout camps after the 75 season. They were all asked to come back for show #2 when we had our 2 week camp in late July - and a lot of them did. I certainly don't think there were any hard feeling from the members who had to march that first show - maybe a little jealousy though.
  4. My idea for the 75th anniversary would be for every living man to have ever marched with the Madison Scouts to donate $75.00 to the Scouts in 2013. If only 40 members from each year donated that would = 40 x 75 yrs x $75.00 = $225,000.00. I'm sure Chris and Dann wouldn't object to that.
  5. Jerry, You nailed it on the head - Dave's sense of humor and inspirational speeches made that summer just a little more special than it already was. I remember that Dave was with the Scouts in 1976 as well. I don't remember if he wrote the drill for the first show but if you watch the "Super Fine Line (1976)" [which was posted on The Madison Scouts Alumni facebook page this week] you can see Dave teaching us the drill for show #2 in 76 at our 2 week boot camp at LaFollette HS. In that video they show a lot of great shows at Whitewater in 76. I believe WW was the 2nd time we performed show #2.
  6. pistol, rifle, flag, bass drum, timpani, timpani, cymbal, bass drum, bass drum.
  7. Kristensen dumped the drumline by over a point in Atlanta and put them in 13th place.
  8. Madison, WI. west side They're showing it on the east side this year too so hopefully it won't be sold out like last year.
  9. Page 4 is just wrong. GO SCOUTS!!! Max out these rehearsal days and kick some arse this week.
  10. I'll add the judges (from Scouts daily schedule: Contest Coordinator: Tony DiCarlo Chief Judge: John Phillips GE Visual: Kyle Miller GE Visual: Michael Stone GE Music: Glenn Fugett GE Music: Ken Turner Visual Proficiency: Bruce E Jones Visual Analysis: Sal Adamo Visual Color Guard: Lee Carlson Music Brass: Paul McGarr Music Analysis: Andrew Cook Music Percussion: JJ Pipitone
  11. Contest Coordinator: Tim Meals Chief Judge: Lee Carlson GE Music: Paul McGarr GE Visual: Lee Carlson Music Analysis: Ken Turner Music Brass: David Orser Music Percussion: Giff Howarth Visual Analysis: Sal Adamo Visual Proficiency: Michael Stone Just a FYI, the scouts usually have the judges listed on their daily schedule on their web page. They usually post thier schedule for the day on their face book page also.
  12. Couldn't agree with you more on this one BozzlyB. This is NOT a thread to bash other corps especially our neighbors to the northwest. The Blue Stars and the Scouts are currently rehearsing in or around Rome NY. Where they rehearse in the winter is due to the fact that its much cheaper and convenient for the members and staff to get there and it isn't as f'n cold and snowy as it is in Wisconsin. They are still the MADISON Scouts and LA CROSSE Blue Stars and we can just hope that they'll continue to do everything in their power to be with us for a long time to come. As with everything in life you must adjust to survive. And by the way its nice to see the Blue Stars are cleaning things up and making a push. As far as the Scouts greeting people after shows I know their drum majors starting doing it last year. Maybe our friend Weedy could enlighten us as to when, who's idea it was etc.
  13. RIP Geno. It was an honor marching with you in 06. This is a good time to remind everyone to sign an organ donor card.
  14. Of course the 1997 picture of the crowd was a "reframed" moment from the 1980 show. I'm proud to say I marched with both of those DM's in the MSARP show in '06.
  15. Exactly. If there were ushers doing their job no one would be allowed into the seating area while a corps was performing. It is difficult to control people getting up and leaving during a show but a few reminders from the announcer wouldn't hurt. And thanks TerriTroop for setting the record straight - it was the people sitting in the so called culprits seats that were the problem.
  16. I&E results are up on dci.org. Hit the "news" tab on top and it's the first thing listed.
  17. Those 50 yard line seats must be REALLY expensive.
  18. Where did you hear that? I know Komnick has committed to staying thru 2017 but hadn't heard that anyone on the musical staff has.
  19. could you repeat that, I didn't get it the first 15 times.
  20. I think the Scouts will be better next year than they are this year. 3rd, 5th, 7th who knows. Remember last year at this time they took 8th in Mpls but were 10th in Indy. I had a conversation with Donnie VanDoren last week in Whitewater and he told me that the goal of the staff is for the corps to improve every year. They have no control over what other corps are doing just what they are doing. 2011 was a nice improvement from 2010 but they were still in 10th. I think they have improved a lot from last year as have a few other corps. If they keep improving like they have been under this new staff I'll be a happy alumnus. The one thing I would like to see announced is that the staff (Mason & Co.) is joining Chris Komnick in committing to another 5 years.
  21. Here's my prediction for Mpls. 1.BD 2.Crown 3.Cadets 4.PR 5.SCV 6.Bluecoats 7.Scouts 8.Boston 9.Cavies 10.Spirit 11.Blue Stars 12.Blue Knights 13.Bones 14.Troopers 15.Glassmen 16.Colts 17.The Academy 18.Mandarins 19.Pioneer 20.Cascade I hope I didn't miss anyone. I've grouped those I feel will be real close depending on performance and whose judging.
  22. This discussion reminded me of my thoughts while listening to the Scouts encore in Whitewater last week. The Scouts played 2 of Ray's arrangements (updated of course for the new instrumentation)- Never Walk Alone and Brian's song. I saw lots of tears during both of those tunes. Ray could really find and express the emotion in the tunes he arranged.
