  1. My first corps The Eau Claire Boys did the same. All of us in the guard went into the drumline or hornline and the new females were in the guard. The "glass ceiling" was shattered after one year when we became The Sundowners and females were in all sections. There were no males in the guard though which was pretty common in all co-ed corps until the late 80's I believe. I think the answer to the original question that was posed "the why" is that it was mainly for recruiting purposes.
  2. You are quoting a comment about 3 members in the Bridgemen. The situation was completely different with the Muchachos.
  3. I would say the question to ask is "if the staff who knowingly allowed a lot of overage members to march would have seen the effect on those members who were not overage would they have gone ahead with it."
  4. Don't get me wrong (or the person I overheard for that matter). I love VK and I loved when their DM's came walking out for scores with lawn chairs but I believe the Cavie alum was a little disappointed in his corps' lack of class.
  5. If the show in WW had "great changes" I'm glad I didn't have to sit through their show earlier. In a word "painful". I have been a cavalier fan since the 60's and have always loved their drum line but that was the dirtiest I have heard them in my life. 2nd place in drums - you have got to be kidding me.
  6. Overheard from a Cavalier alumnus while the DM's were "strolling" out on the field. "Now we're the F'n Velvet Knights! I can't believe this s#@%."
  7. I'll be parking buses. How 'bout we switch, I'll sit with your gf and you hang out with the diesel fumes and the asphalt? (See you there)
  8. List of judges tonight: Contest Coordinator: Dan Omillanowski Chief Judge: Deborah Torchia Color Guard: Deborah Torchia GE Music: Chip Crotts GE Visual: Lee Carlson Music Analysis: David Cooksey Music Brass: Steven Page Music Percussion: Jay Webb Visual Analysis: Jeff Young Visual Proficiency: Keith Baker
  9. According to the Scouts web site yes there will be a full panel tonight.
  10. I'm happy to report we had a very successful tailgate party this year. The alumni and fans drank up the 2 kegs of Spotted Cow an hour before show time and then proceeded to finish off the 2 kegs of Miller Lite and polish off almost all of the food. A special thanks to Robin and Marcia Goldberg for all of the hard work they put in every year putting on the tailgate so the alumni and fans can get together for a few hours to reconnect and raise some $$ for the Scouts at the same time. And it was great to see you Bill! I almost forgot: GO SCOUTS!!
  11. Hey Weedy - I miss you dude, hope all is well.
  12. I'm getting ready to head out and help set up for the pre-show tailgate. If you're coming to the show stop by for good music, food and drinks before the show. All proceeds (of course) go to the Madison Scouts.
  13. Scouts will be at the show site rehearsing. I believe they start at 11 am.
  14. 2 of those rifles marched in the Scouts in 1976 and were my roommates that summer (John Z. and Angel E.)
  15. 2 words - Head Chopper! Cymbal Player for the win.
  16. I believe up until 1975 the Scouts always traveled on School buses when they were in Wisconsin.
  17. Be sure to come a little early for the pre-show tailgate party with good music, food , drink and lots of old drum corps people talking about back in the day. The Scouts usually rehearse at the show site all day and always stop by and sing Never Walk Alone with the alumni. Its at fireman's park next to the high school and the parking lot that is full of buses.
  18. wompwomp is correct. Thirdcoast, myself and others loaded up Badger One for the trip to Indy for every days. There were 5 of us alumni from the 70's, 1 from the 60's, 1 from the 80's, 3 board members, a current Scout and a future Scout. There were no horns playing, flags spinning or drums banging but there were plenty of back in the day stories being retold for the umpteenth time. Always a great time hanging with my brothers.
  19. Hey Bill, How 'bout a call next week with a full report for this old guy. No fun up here any more in the winter, just unloading the bus and equipment truck once in a while. Show those pots and pans whose boss!!
  20. I love the hat dip but the guard hasn't worn hats for about 2 decades.
  21. As "noneofyourbusiness" noted above the Scouts have a camp next month within a half hour of Arlington. Even if you don't go to audition if you want to see how the Scouts run things, get a vibe of the corps etc. go check them out. If you can afford it then I'd say sign up to audition - you'll learn more in that weekend than you can imagine. The worst that can happen is you're right back where you are now but you'll have a list of things they will give you to work on so you'll be ready in 2013. You're right to start now rather than waiting 'til you're 20 or 21 like so many do now days and then regret that they only were able to march for a year or two. Best of luck.
  22. 1966 or 67 Troopers were housed a couple doors down from my house and showed me the difference between a big corps and a small corps (like the one I was in). 1970 or 71 I saw SCV in La Crosse and they showed me what drum corps was going to become. 1972 our corps was housed at the same H.S. as Anaheim and they showed me how champions behaved and performed, unfortunately that evening we went on after them - humility would be a good word to describe that night. 1974 I saw Madison in Milwaukee, where I had moved and was working, and they made me wake up to the fact that I still had 2 years to march. I was lucky enough to then march my last 2 years as a Scout. 2006 MSARP showed me that you can indeed go back in time and be a kid again.
