  1. No....Suncoast continued for a couple more years after their 89 finals run.
  2. Member San Francisco Renegades ans San Jose State marching band. Got the word this morning...passed last night.
  3. Kinda glad BD's name wasn't in the article, since the accusations had nothing to DO with BD. Of course, the question from our side is...was BD aware of these accusations while he worked for the org, or did they bounce him upon finding out? If they legit didn't know until he was let go, no blame should attach to BD.
  4. BD pecking order...rookie, vet. Period. For feature or solo work? Can you do the job? Good, you're in. John Hendrickson of the La Fiesta opening trio was as much a rookie to drum corps as I was...yet he got that feature. I tried out for the Latin Implosion solo when it was a duet...on the lead part that ended up being a Duane Schimmel solo. Not only was I not dissuaded from going against multi-year vets for the spot -- especially since I was a 4th sop and the established guys were 1st -- I made the first cut. If I'd gone for the LF trio I would've gone for the part Stymie got (dude with the full beard)....and as it was right in my range, I would've stood a good chance at getting it. BD was a meritocracy...if you were good enough you were good enough....that was all.
  5. And you'd think, with all the clear successes BD has in every area of the activity -- from corps culture (and even when we weren't winning in the 87-92 time frame we were till supportive...we didn't eat ourselves), fundraising, management, staff consistency, etc -- other corps might actually try to replicate those mindsets...since they WORK.
  6. I think the closest we had in BD was the years we marched down the left sleeve of our member jacket. However, I don't remember any toxicity attached. There was no diff between a single year guy like me and someone who started in the C corps and aged out with the A...a one-and-done rookout to the activity like me was no less important than someone who started out in the A corps at 14 in 1977 and aged out with me and 4 rings. More importantly, i was not TREATED like i was less worthy to be in the line -- less of a Blue Devil -- than a far more experienced vet. That holds true to this day...and while we older alums certainly feel for those who were going to age-out in 2020 and never got to hit the field for even a single competitive run -- particularly those who were in their only year in the corps -- none of US feel they're any less a Blue Devil than we are.
  7. 1973 was BD's first trip to DCI....that doesn't mean they were inactive. Hell, they only added brass in 1971. Don't know where you got the idea they were ever inactive, unless you were confusing them with BlueCOATS.
  8. Great info....but too many won't care. And a side note...if the corps owns their own fleet of busses and semi tractors, those costs are identical, especially on something like fuel, THE COSTS OF WHICH ARE OUT OF CONTROL OF THE CORPS. But sure...keep focusing on elements that are almost non-issues from a percentage standpoint and ignore something like the above.
  9. You DO realize you just proved his point, right?? That just because it's on the website doesn't mean they follow it?
  10. Oh man...if I'd flown the airline and saw THAT on a playlist in the air...."THEY'VE GOT MY RING!" would be heard up on the flight deck!
  11. To clarify...84 BD was my first time EVER marching corps-style. My HS and college bands were squads of 4, facing direction of march, etc. I'd never marched a slide or backwards until BD...it was a steeeeeeep learning curve.
  12. And that was the first year SCV even had a SHARE of the Ott (but really...a three-way?? Even an uber-rook like ME was shocked at that one).
  13. Me at 2004 DCA prelims with SoCal Dream and somehow surviving Gulf Coast Sound's podium....scariest thing I'd ever been on. 03 or 04 (forget which year) and Renegades with "Niner-Two"...forget her name (everyone called her "Trinity" because her uni looked like that of the character fro "The Matrix") and differing rhythm patterns on EACH HAND. Freaked me out whenever i saw her do it! 2016 Academy...just for being SUCH a showman and a #### fine conductor!
  14. One of the rare times DCI has actually put it's foot down. USA Fencing HAS banned a number of people -- mostly for sexual issues -- https://www.usafencing.org/ineligible-suspended-list DCI needs to stop protecting it's own when they cross the line.
  15. Sadly, we have this issue in fencing as well.
  16. Happy to report that the campaign has surpassed the target amount!
  17. Wow....looked like I've been banned from the drum corps subreddit....for posting this fundraiser. Seriously? I've never posted anything there that garnered even a warning, and I get banned over a fundraiser for Tom Float's WIDOW? Who's moderating over there...Catherine Burr?? I regret nothing.
  18. Don't know if this is allowed here....don't care. https://gofund.me/2850dcc4
  19. You guys are missing the obvious chart...."Catching the Sun" by Spyro Gyra (VK 85 closer).
