  1. I like that fact that for a small corps 7th regiment has a very good distribution through the sections. I count about 30 horns 18 guard, and 12 battery give or take? I hate 22 person batter for a 15 person hornline with 4 guard members...
  2. Yes it still isn't finished, I couldn't believe it.... It ended on a very bland note. I'm stationed in San Diego

  5. So this was my first and perhaps sadly only drum corps show I will probably see this season, thank you Navy.., but it was still a good time. It could have used one more big name corps, (Blue Devils, or Blue Knights) to really make it a good night. A couple of observations, two corps, Incognito and City Sound never showed up, in my 14 years of being in and watching drum corps I've never seen that so hopefully everything is okay. The stadium and crowd was kind of smallish but considering there weren't many big name corps there this doesn't surprise me. Velvet Knights These guys had a lot of nice and funny moments, its the first time I've ever watched the Velvet Knights live and in person so I was excited about that. They are very small with only 15 horns or so... They need to recruit more. Revolution I initially watched the Fan Network broadcast of them and only saw about 15 horns and was really concerned about them, however to my relief, they had about 25 horns on the field today, 4 are still learning the show and I'd guess they have two or three more shows left, big step up from Velvet Knights. I think they should have beat Impulse to be honest. Impulse These guys had a nice show with about 25 horns. My biggest complaint is that I think most of the horns weren't really playing, almost no volume and they had a full World Class sized drum line, over powered the horns a lot! Gold I was pleasantly surprised by this group. I had never seen them and they came out on the field with about 40 horns or so. I wasn't to sure about the primary colors theme, since there uniforms have nothing to do with any primary colors but I still enjoyed the show. They put out a nice sound and I think they'll be able to compete well with the rest of the Open Class corps. Reminded me of a strong Division II corps from back in the day. Intermission Long, lasted almost 45 minutes, but this was good! I forgot my jacket in the car so it gave me a chance to get it and get food. Both very key since I was starving! and it got uber-cold... Mandarins So I had heard terrible things about this show but it didn't come off as bad as I had heard. They Electronics were a bit over done but you could hear the corps just fine and the blend was acceptable. I really like the guard uniforms, its a shame the corps can't get any bigger. I couldn't figure out if the singing was someone actually singing or just and electronic thing because it sounded like the words changed. I also didn't like how they had the singing going well the corps was playing ff at one point. All and all it was enjoyable and a nice way to start off world class for the night. Academy THANK YOU!!! These guys have a really nice show and are putting out some serious sound! Call me a sucker but nothing is better than when a corps is blowing your face off! Full sized corps, you can tell they are making a big push for finals. Hornline is good but its not tight yet, if they clean up the book a lot they will be great. Marching was a little rough to I think. All and all my favorite show of the evening. Pacific Crest These guys also had a great show. Not quite as loud as Academy but close. They are playing Asphalt Cocktail which I appreciate as a Bluecoats fan. I really enjoyed the end of the show when they had the full field guard coverage going well the corps was parked and playing my face off. Really nice full field effect. Santa Clara Vanguard Some people say this show is a bit out there but I actually enjoyed the classical nature of it. They have some really nice moments, one where the gaurd is on the 50 ish and the horns keep going and going into the form and moving about. There is a lot going on in this show. The girl I was with said that she couldn't have her eyes in enough places. There hornline was by far the best of the night although they never really let go that much. That being said though I imagine when they add the closer they will deliver what we want. On that note.... What a disappointing way to end the night. There show just stopped... and that was it. There wasn't an encore either... I mostly feel bad for the kids of the corps because I remember what that was like and you feel so unsatisfied to end a show like that. They at least could stand still the closer.. Oh well. All and all though I was happy with the overall show. Gold was my surprise of the night and Favorites went Academy then SCV and then PC. Hopefully I can make another show, I really need to see my Bluecoats :-) Mark
  6. Ha Ha, can't be that bad!! Beat the pants off of everyone there!! I think there is promise! Mark
  7. slotting from the year before happens all the time, it happened when I marched it still happens today. Scores will change a lot at the next one. Mark
  8. I've listened to them. I'm actually very impressed with the recording quality, brass lines sound great! Drumline does sound a bit subdued. The overbearing bass is there for the corps that used to much of it, although I don't think that is a recording problem, its just using a subwoofer to blast bass sound that is absolutely not needed. The worst I've heard so far is the Bluecoats, it ruins two parts in the opener... It sounds so foreign and super bad with subwoofers. I hope corps recognize that certain things do not record well and don't really add to the performance... Makes me sad I'm a big Bluecoats fan as well... Mark
  9. I remember begging my parents to buy a DVD player because that was the first year they put out finals on DVD. It was awesome of course. Naturally if they start making Blu-Rays kids will complain to their parents to get the Blu-Rays. You have to figure they'd cost about 150 though, comparing normal dvd prices to blu-ray prices.
  10. I was wondering the same thing!! I hope everything is alright and they get back in the show soon! Mark
  11. Eh, nothing is better than playing loud in my opinion :-) Great music helps too.
  12. Just some quick comments Lake Erie Sound (This is actually a men's accapela group). They were fun to listen to. The Erie Thunderbirds!!!! Man I love the thunderbirds, although back when I marched and we'd have to stand at parade rest waiting for retreat for 45 minutes because they never stopped playing sucked!! They went on first and played some nice tunes, and had some nice screamers. Capital Regiment Every time I see them they have 1 less Contra, for there sake I'm going to stop going to there shows, they were at 7 in Pittsburgh, 6 in Toledo, and 5 tonight. They are improving steadily, kind of weird between them, I thought Revolution looked cleaner and had a better sound but the musical message of Captial was much easier to understand and more clear, hopefully that makes some sense. They need to get more guard on the field as well. Revolution They had a nice size corps, 8 contras, but I don't think they had even 40 horns. Like I said earlier the musical message didn't really come through to me, I think its fair to have them scored about the same as Capital, I think Capital has more room to grow though. Teal Sound What a fun show, they had about 56 horns and had the first big horn sound of the night (They were twice as loud as Crossmen to be honest). They had three guitars which made me groan at first but it was actually pretty cool. I noticed the whole night I couldn't really hear any of the synth stuff that well. Teal Sound has an awesome Contra soli, I swear its just contras for about 45 seconds or so and I was talking to a member after the show and apparently they are going to add to it which will be awesome! however that part needs a lot of cleaning. Boggled my mind that they only won open class by 1 point... Crossmen This was an improvement from Toledo, its kind of hard to tell when the show starts but maybe thats the point? They get the award for most contras added in a three day span ever. They marched 9 in Toledo and 13 tonight which was nice. They really need to pump up the volume though. I think they are improving and it will be nice. I really like the ballad part where they are just standing there and playing loud, but it needs some more movement in my opinion. Glassmen These guys put out some sound tonight which I appreciate. Really its not that memorable to me. Typical Glassmen I'd say. Crown Why are these guys beating Cadets? Its beyond me. Don't get me wrong they are great and really put out some sound but they aren't as clean. I think the ending needs some more juice. Have I ever mentioned that I love 16 contras??? Well I do, and these guys are great. Looks awesome, I like all the green too. Cadets This almost hurts to say but this is a drum corps show! They added a little extra impact at the horn entrance to the show which really made it work well. They had synth problems and the beginning of the show was missing and when it came back it was way to loud! Other than that, great show. Every time I think West Side Story is played out, turns out someone finds something new and fun to do with it. Overall a great show, please don't take any of my criticisms to seriously, I watch more for entertainment than judging. Till next time. Mark
  13. Just thought I'd throw my two cents in as well. First off, I love the Baldwin show, Its my home town show and I always enjoy going back there, but I always feel like the sound is very flat there. There is nothing for the sound to reverb off of, so it makes for a slightly less enjoyable experiance. Second, I actually really liked the synthesizers, I thought they added alot, although for a couple of corps, (colts, and then maybe glassmen or cadets), they use the bass electronic sounds way to loud, it reverberated the whole stadium and to me sounded worse than the cadets narration last year... Please turn it down, a 100 contras couldn't reverberate like that so its going to sound dumb.. Third, Thank God for no narration!!! First time in 4 years I went to a show with none! Amen Cap Reg - Great to see them back. I think they had about 3 or 4 horn holes at least but they have about 40, lots of work to do there, someone else mentioned the 6 gaurd, hopefully they can add to that. Two of the tenors only knew the 2nd half of the show. Should be entertaining at the end of the year once everyone in the hornline starts playing, lots of indiduals sticking out. Drumline great, and great job on coming back. Colts - Nice to get the wake up call from the colts, like I said earlier, the bass synth was way to loud and foriegn during the loud parts, I overall enjoyed the show, thought they had some nice drum and gaurd moments. They have a big sound and could compete for finals come the end of the year. Boston - LOVED the opening horn hit, favorite horn moment of the night, This shoudl be a really fun show, they play loud, the crowd loved the apple bit, and the sound effects that went with it. Great job, I really thought they should have been within 4 or 3 points of crown. Seemed to end very upbrutly, I hope they change that, it was the low part of the show for me. Glassmen - Were closer to Boston then I thought they would be, very nice opening, hornline needs to work some balance issues, but overall pretty nice Crown - Favorite corps of the night, love the green plumes, Big big sound, loved the opening and how it comes back. The one middle section where the horns are playing loud and dancing about and move up to the front is just awesome. They just need to clean up there drill more at this point I feel. Cadets - Best marching of the night in my opinion, until they end... lol, they marched the end of the show for the first time tonight and it was obvious, it is some crazy drill and will be awesome, could be a little bit louder although at one point they do hold a power chord for about 20 seconds which really got the crowd going. I don't like the west side arrangments, to much wierd stuff going on, they should just replay the 84 arrangments in my opinion. Some phasing went on between the synths and the horns at one point too. All in all a great time, I think crown will pass cadets, the score trend seems to be going that way, although its way to early to tell on that one. Good luck to everyone, I'll be in toledo this Thursday. Mark
  14. Ha they can Boo all they want! Still gets the coats pumped up. That is the best part about it! Plus no other corps has a distinct cheer like that. Love it!!! And yes I do remembered getting booed for beating Madison in 2000. The easiest way to tell the difference is when they say "I'm not Blooing I'm Booing!" lol... Mark
  15. How is Vanguard beating Bluecoats. I don't get it at all.... Mark
  16. So for some background on this story, I marched for three years with the Lake Erie Regiment and 4 with the Bluecoats, my little sister far from a drum corps fan. I've been out for a few years and are in the Navy now and my sister lives in Erie. Anyways I get a call from my sister tonight and she tells me that she can hear the McDowell Band (the local high school band) practiceing in her window while she is studying and that it is really loud. I was like okay thats wierd, then I got to thinking and I said there is a drum corps show in erie maybee you are hearing the drum corps but the problem was the show was always downtown (at least when I marched). So anyways I did some checking and turns out the show was at McDowell highschool and she called me to tell me that a band was playing and it actually was probably the Carolina Crown. haha. Anyways I thought I'd share that story, all these years and I still can't get her to tell the difference. Mark
  17. The Colts were freaking awesome. I loved it. Keep up the great work!
  18. Here come the Bluecoats! Bluecoats will win and this is why. Bluecoats first corps to actually use amplification and make it cool. Seriously the first show I've heard yet where it sounds good. Cadets once again win the award for cheesiest use of vocals ever!
