  1. Please close this thread, it has been reduced to blatant corps bashing.
  2. So personally, I think the percussion judging system needs some revising. The judging currently is based on a system of "reads" as the field judge goes back and forth between the pit and battery. Judges can miss extremely strong or weak moments in the show if they are with the other section of the percussion ensemble and time that could be spent judging is spent running back and forth between the sections. Rarely does a judge split his time between the two sections equally, and will usually spend the majority of his time with one section or the other depending on his or her own percussive background. Would having two percussion field judges fix the problem, or would it just put unnecessary green shirts on the field? Would adding a second percussion judge lead to adding low brass/high brass judges or weapons/dance/flags judges? Post your thoughts. Edit: pretty bad typo in the poll section, it's supposed to be "Only one judge, there is no need for a "percussion ensemble" judge and the music ensemble judge should take care of the Perc-2 judge's responsibilities"
  3. How about this....randomize corps within their respective 'packs' during finals week. That completely fixes the problem of similar quality corps performing next to each other. If we used the sets of 4 idea this past summer, there would have been serious scoring gaps within these groups. What if the blue knights pulled the last time slot in group two and BAC pulled the first slot in group 3? If we create groups where similar scoring corps are randomized, judges would be able to effectively compare corps without worrying about performance slotting. Hell, to shake things up even more, we could randomize the pack orders. I guess this method would pose a problem for corps who are trying to move up a pack, but if we only use this model during finals week, then the scoring gaps between corps would have already been established throughout the entire season. Honestly, was there anyone who thought any corps under the first pack was going to take gold this year?
  4. There are so many factors that make a good drumline.... When it comes to musicality, no one can beat Phantom 06. While their book might not have been as difficult as many other drumlines, the touch and control displayed by that battery is unsurpassed. When it comes to a drum line approaching the drum with passion and aggressiveness, SCV 04 wins. It's hard to ram a bunch of notes when you are teaching a groove based technique package, but it's because the entire drumline is grooving that they approached their playing the way they did. Overall cleanness, I'd probably say BD 97. From a compositional standpoint, Cavies 00. Metrically this book blows others out of the water. Wierd time signatures and uncommon tuplets are everywhere in these notes, and the line pulls it off without a sweat. Sound quality wise, the Cadets 01-03 and 05 drumlines beat the hell out of their drums. No other drumline really puts that much velocity behind their stroke. From a drill and listening situation standpoint, I'd say star 93. Having a line that stretches half way across the field with 2 separate tenor lines one each end must have been #### near impossible to clean. In addition, all of the stuff with the line splitting and coming back together.

  6. It's got a lot to do with the book. Scott loves to write very dense books, lots of notes. More notes = more chances to tick. If Scott dumbed the parts down a bit, I think BD would have a lot more drum titles in their book.
  7. You always have to remember that DCI judging is based on the judge's personal opinion. Just as someone may have hated the Cavalier's music or phantom's drill, there are people who felt the other way. Judges are supposed to be objective but objectivity is very hard to pull off when you're looking at drastically different shows. Phantom lost by less than half a point, when scores are that close, one show is not necessarily better than the other and the winner is decided by the judges' personal opinion.
  8. If the electronics rule passes next year, there's probably going to need to be 1 to 5 more people in the pit depending on the corps.
  9. This rule will not help those inconsistencies. DCI should be more concerned about the little guys while they're still around instead of passing rules that alienate them more. That might work, but I don't think that'll fly with DCI. There's all this talk about tradition being defiled with these new electronics rules. DCI has had the 21 age limit since day 1, a tradition I think many marchers hold dear. Changing the age limit would probably just result in an even bigger outcry about the destruction of all that is holy in the activity. Besides, that rule would lead to giant talent inconsistencies in the 2/3 corps. The experience of a 2/3 before a div 1 would be completely different than marching one afterwards, and I don't think it would really be as enjoyable after marching a Div 1.
  10. I'm more concerned about base memberships of smaller corps. It's not a matter of the kids where Div 1 is all or nothing, it's the kids who are in the smaller corps as a spring board. All of the leaders of the 2/3 and lower 1 corps would be more likely to go try out for their dream corps because of the additional spots. More people would make the high Div 1 corps, and there would be less people who don't make it and then go back to their smaller corps for another year to get better. Less time in these corps results in less members all together, results in less lower corps. Sure, maybe phantom could melt your face off more, but more and more corps would also being going the way of KK, Magic and Capital regiment. Size does matter. A bigger look and sound = GE. As for Hopkins weaning us onto woodwinds, I really don't think it's worth it to worry about that rule for now. There are many less agenda-driven directors than George, and they realize how much this rule would alienate the activity's fan base. Drum corps will always remain a niche activity (like it or not) and this rule would definitely make that niche much smaller. It would be a bad financial move for DCI to pass this rule altogether. I don't think there is going to be one moment where woodwinds are just *BAM* in the activity, but it will be a much more gradual change if it happens at all. Whether or not this is the beginning of that change, well, I guess that's up to interpretation.
  11. Here's the thing I don't like about amplified vocals. The best part about drum corps in my mind is that it is many individuals coming together to be part of something that is bigger than themselves; an ensemble of musicians. All the individuals are supposed to work as one performing unit. Now, what happens when one individual is made more important in this ensemble? Featuring one individual for an extended period of time with the rest of the corps just being a background takes away from this idea of a corps as one unit. Blue Devils 2005 and Cadets 2006 are both examples of a show where a narrator is put above the rest of the ensemble in the show. This doesn't only apply to narrators, but to the musicians on the field as well. I don't like shows like BD 89 and ECJ 2006 for the exact same reason. I enjoy the tasteful use of short solos(Think recent cadets drum features) and I liked the use of vocals in BD's show this year for the exact same reason, it was tasteful. I'm going to keep an open mind about the vocals in the cadets show this year, but if it is going to be like most of the shows that have had vocals in the past 3 years, I don't think I'll enjoy it.
