I think he was there in 2001 too?? I could be wrong. I hope this is a good move the Bluecoats. I've said many times on here, I thought their design was the issue. I know that the guard has a large part in these numbers, but vis performance and vis ensemble are probably effected the most by the caption head. I just sent mine saying how much I loved how they're opening up the activity with narration and amplification. I also said I hope they will support the rule change allowing electronics.

Any thoughts on who their new drill writer will be?

They looked like Native Americans to me. Maybe they were supposed to be birds, but it wasn't clear.

I heard Jamey Thompson won't be writing the drill in 2008. I'm not sure of any other details.

It's to showcase the activity. Why not just show the best? That's what would hook someone. Not a div2 or div3 corps. The same people that complain that div2 and div3 aren't getting enough exposure are probably the same people that didn't go to see them live in Pasadena.

Oh and to clarify, starting this year, visual performance was judged from the stands until July. Then the judges moved to the field. All three can vary depending on the judges background. Sometimes it's extremely color guard design/excellence heavy. Sometimes it's not.

Visual Performance is more than just technique. It is technique and excellence on the field level. It covers form control, space, etc. This includes the color guard technique, timing, lower body, drill. It also accounts for written vocabulary and demand. Visual Ensemble is half composition and half excellence. Visual GE is how effective the program is visually and also includes the visual musicality of what is written. Music can affect the Visual GE caption. Performance is also a sub caption.

And if it sounds the same, who cares?

Why? If the laugh was effective why try to find something else? If they would sound the same, who cares.

I bet they leave the roof closed for every performance. That would make the playing conditions equal.

It's a 0.6 difference. Yes, only .3 counts in the final score, but they were still .6 away. The "value of the tenth" in the judging community is the same regardless of the caption.

Then are there issues with the brass adjudication that we should be discussing? Rarely did any DCI brass judge agree.

Were they that great? The best brass staff? Head to Head They never beat Blue Devils once this season. They never beat the Cavaliers once this season. They never beat Bluecoats once this season. They beat Phantom only one time this season. They beat Cadets only one time this season.

Should they be replaced? They were 7th in brass. That and music ensemble were their lowest captions.

Why should they change their style? I'll still argue that their problem isn't performance. It's design and color guard.
