  1. I guess to me...yes Star may not have won in 1993...but that Corps would still place in the Top 6 today...you can't say that about an 86 devils verse 96 or Garfield 83,84,87 verse 93,94, 97...or better yet...what Corps do you think could have placed in the Top 6....15 years later??? I look at that show and feel that they could still pull off a Top 6 finish today...you really can't say that about alot of Corps...as good as they are for that year and maybe even several years afterward.
  2. There are many threads about when did DCI really change...and it just dawned on me...it really wasn't one, two or three valved bugles, trumpets drill etc...alot of things led up to the shift...but one of the most profound things i've come to realize is that as mentioned previously how far ahead STAR OF INDIANA was or is for there time when they left DCI and how much of a profound affect they would have on what is considered Drum Corps of today...as I watch the reincarnation of Star(Crown and many of todays Drum Corps) you understand what I mean...if you really go back thru the years and look at the shows whether they have themes, or not...pit up front or any other changes...it really doesn't seem to be the backlash for change that has occurred until there was a definate move to all this "body movement" and the like with this show..I am waiting to see a corps do the moon walk...and I don't mean VK in 87 or 88...1993 star had a unique emotion, music you really can't hum or repeat later... but it does somehow resonate within you from Bartok...I just find it odd all these years later...and the year Star packs up there stuff to go in another direction...and to me it really does seem that the pardigm shift started in that moment...there are alot of things that led up to that season...but now I watch the shows...and think that this was the NEW Drum Corps...and that which was OLD and Still somewhat Traditional, was now on life support...it is interesting that the kids of today speak of tradition...but the shift is definately more torward..."band" and not really that which most of us think as Traditional Drum Corps. This is merely a THOUGHT...not an attack or bashing of anykind..just an observation...as I have alot of friends apart of Star and Crown and I love what they do...I just miss that which I consider Drum Corps. But no matter what it's the kids that make the activity what it is...and will always be. I think that show would play very well today...but consider if you were able to bring back shows of yesteryear and put them against shows of today...how would they stack up? I know personally I would smile and go crazy...probably alot like most fans...which is probably the same reason we have so many people watching in the parking lot and not in the stadiums. But would Devils 86 SCV 89 Garfield 87 score as well as say 93 Star TODAY which IMHO...seems to fit right in to todays...Drum Corps World.
  3. C'mon folks...how about Devils 88...black with light grey and tuxedo shoes...now that was nice...
  4. Thank God someone finally posted the obvious...you can't choose the Corps for them...sometimes they can't even choose the Corps for themselves...a fine young horn captain from SCV (Amy) has once said that SCV chooses YOU...and actually, I think that is said for most any Corps except the ones who aren't fielding a full Corps by May...LOL(since even in championship years the Cadets have struggled preseason having to fill positions, at least back in the 80's/90's) I marched both Bluecoats and Cadets...for many reasons...but i watched BD Cadets and SCV in 83-87 and I was hooked...here is the excerpt from Amy...enjoy 7:37...she speaks for us all...past present and future your heart will ultimately bring you to your destiny...
  5. Not necessarily...as would be the case with the tick system...correct...start with perfect score and work your way down... are you saying that 87 scores were pushed to perfect based on the timing of the show?
  6. So this season's Blue Devils Blue smoke video got me thinking...was it better to have the Perfect Season like the 72 Dolphins...or, during it's time is the true mark...87 Cadets Perfect Score...likely never to be achieved again the better achievement? You don't have to ask me which one I think...i will give credit to both which are truly amazing feats...FHNSAB!
  7. If anyone else would be interested please submit a request to Discovery Channel Time Warp to show interest in High Speed Camera work of a DCI Calibre Drumline. I believe there already is a request under Drumline...
  8. Since there are some old ones...Marc Sylvester...during a rain storm while Cadets rehearsing in a parking lot at some random school...1989..."Water, Water everywhere and not a drop to drink...run it again"!!!!!!
  9. How about hearing the baby cry during Garfield 85, talk about a moment!
  10. I have posted this in both the Indoor Guard site as well as DCI site...As a member of Drum Corps from the 80's and having attended several WGI events...specifically 1989...I was wondering forget who is the best...but what other years does anyone feel, was it evident that a guard or corps should have won and didn't...taking nothing away from State Street Review in 89 or Madison Scouts in 88...but BLESSED SAC ruled and Dev's are you kidding me...sure DCI was in Whitewater in 88, but honestly...to this day...I am utterly amazed at SAC's loss in 89...just curious and as a Cadet...I'll eve throw in 87 could have been a tie!!! Naaaahhhh!

  12. Bottom line is that some people will always rather hear the Corps Warmup either Battery or Hornline than go some place and not get the same thrill and charge of that which occurs outside the stadium...it has nothing to do with a Corps spot in the lineup...fans of a Corps will follow them whereever!!! That in and of itself is the beauty of Drum Corps...I too am a person who stays "in the lot" and there is something beautiful about that...
  13. Here it goes again...what goes around comes back around...89 SCV great show...but come on if you get two years in a row to perform a show and make it better then it should be an improvement...but the best show of the 80's...you gotta be kidding me...there should be an automatic deduction just for redoing nearly the entire show...with a large population of returners...anyway...I still put 87 SCV before this show...but 88 Devs Rocked and did not even win...as for first place finishers...87 GARFIELD..
  14. Ok let's start with SCV 1987 Opening to Russian Xmas Music...fuggetabout it one of the best...The Cadets to Tame the Perilous Skies...can't even find it on You tube...Madison Scouts 83...Star of Indiana and Close Encounters...God Bless those days...
  15. OK what exact delusional status are you people talking about...for years Dev's have had on of the best and sharpist Contra lines ever....merely picking Coats and Regiminent is somehwhat of an interesting selection, as I believe both tend to have held 12 members in their lines this season...As the regiment has made the change from G Bugles to current Tubas the brightness of the Corps has increased...Regiment as a Corp has ALWAYS been centered around the Bass end...look at the music...but, I am not exactly sure what anyone is missing here...through the decades Devs have continued to produce a Contra line to be envied...'86, '88, 92 and on and on and on...and all this from a former CADET no less...hell SCV Contra line from 87 blows away most corps of today...and that was with two valved bugles...
  16. Ok wake up just like everything else...the narration will eventually be watered down...or does anyone remember how hard the books usually take shape during the Winter months...as is well known...beneath the narration the Corps is doing what it set out to...return to Drum Corps...the music is unbelievable and not to mention the drill...all that with East Coast Weather and limited ability to put the show together, and fewer kids attending camps...least we not forget that WEST Coast Corp Members usually get to move out much earlier than that of the Midwest and East Coast Corps...anyway...I am sure Hop will eventually removed excess narration...but there is nothing wrong with too much early in the season... as for the judges again return to musically what is going on...just because the narration takes away from a part of the entire show it should only account for GE otherwise there is little to argue...For O Holy Name Shall Always Be!!!
  17. I have to say that there is an aweful lot of narration that detracts from the music...
