  1. I am facing arthroscopic surgery on my right shoulder next week. I suspect hanging a drum with a sling on it for 50+ years has somethng to do with it. My question is, has anyone on here had that surgery, and can I expect to be able to carry a drum on it again, once healed?

As if that weren't enough, once the shoulder heals, I need (left) hip replacment surgery. Again, pushing a drum with that leg may have contributed to my problems! If anyone has had that surgery, I'd be curious to know if wearing a drum with a sling and leg rest will be possible? Will I be able to march and play once again, or will I be forever consigned to a stand from now on?

Any information or advice from my fellow drummers will be appreciated!

Thanks in advance, and Happy Holidays to all!

    Hello John,

My name is Rick Tabor and member of the Bridgemen bassline for the past 6 years. I recently (oct13) went thru shoulder surgery for 2 bone spurs and a frayed rotator cuff. I made it thru this past season after being shot up twice with a 50/50 cortizone/and a numbing agent.... Surgery went well (they give you enough happy juice so you dont care)......its after you start PT thats when it hurts..... im still out of work because im in the well drilling business but i would say if you have an office job you can be back to work in a few weeks.....

Now with both of us being drummers its really important to get our range of motion back and brother does it hurt so get ready...... now i heard for a hip there isnt any PT involved i guess you would just have to walk and build yourself up again.....I tried playing on a pad like 3 weeks after surgery and all the easy stuff went without a hitch...but when i started doing roll exercises and getting faster and faster thats when i felt it..... My Dr said it would take between 3 and 9 months to feel 100% with an outside chance of a year.....

So with all this being said....im out for the 2011 season....with the Bridgemen having split bass parts I dont want to be a burden on the line....no weight on my left shoulder for awhile.... Maybe we can sit together at some shows and watch our corps out there sweating while we have a nice cold one and enjoy the shows !!!!!

I hope this helps a little and bottom line is that your going to be fine

    GOOD LUCK

    Rick Tabor

  2. I put that fire out right away. Should have been the most nerve-wracking moment of my life, but I was SO angry that I just went to our rival (at that time, we've since buried the hatchet) and spoke my mind. It actually worked. LOL I was the only one in uniform, because it was a drum major retreat that night. Their DM was not there when the confrontation took place.

Of course...I WAS happy that Pugsley decided to accompany me on my trek into the ranks of our rivals, though!

HAHAHAHA Jimmy.....your lucky it was Pugsley and not me that went into those ranks that night :) just saying lolol

  3. Grandchilden? Yes we do! I love drum corps. I have played in many over the last 54 years but I have to agree with my grandaughter when she said - "We like your Yellow Band best, Grampa". So sorry I can't make it to the HoF dinner and meet Jim Brady. Now that would be a real treat.

    Dan

You will be missed buddy.....cant wait to see you next time you come down to the states :) Be well my friend !!!!!

  6. I want to march there SO much, but I might be helping out an Open Class corps instead. I think my services are best placed there first. Drum corps is about the kids after all...

    JamMan,

As much as we would love to have you, its most important to you to try and get yourself into a Jr corp !!!!! world or open dont matter.....those were some of the best years of my life and i wish you all the best !!!!!!

The post was intended for people who for whatever reason dont have enough money or didnt make the cut and age outs.....the commitment is small and you can build your chops up with us and try again next year for a Jr corp.... but the standing O's are addictive :)

    Thanks for your post

    Rick #3

  7. I'ld encourage kids to try and march with a competitive Corps first, then try an Alumni Corps.

There are plenty in that area that they could help and get that competitive feeling.

DO encourage the kids to march competitive first and formost !!!!!! We want them to try and live their dream......BUT if money is an issue or they dont make the cut I want them to know that there is a place for them in the Bridgemen.....we will help them build up what their weak in and for the next year maybe they will make it....we have several members from Jr corps in our ranks as I type this !!!!!

    Thank you for your post

  9. Hey Rick, I had an instructor who claimed to be the QB for that game. His name is Daryl Hernandez and I think he played baritone. Know anything about that?

Im sorry Bill, but i dont remember who was the QB .....wish i could help ya ......ahhh i'll ask around the corp, maybe someone remembers...

    Rick

  10. So as I sit here eating breakfast watching old shows on FanNetwork I just realized that I've never seen a recording of the 1980 DCI Finals go long enough into Bridgemen's post-show football game for me to find out who "won"! Or rather, what exactly happened in the game after the broadcast cut them off and they had to let the next corps go on. I can only imagine what it must have felt like to watch the Bridgmen play a game of football while waiting to go on for your performance

So anyone who was there care to chime in as what happened?

Great show! Shame it didn't win (no offense to BD & 27). Though honestly think the female DM grinding up on a sop (and then some) might have been a bit too raunchy

it was a great show !!!!! The Bridgemen played the alabama fight song for their warm up before the show and it ended with said football game.....

If i remember correctly Bama was one of the teams the other didnt matter cause it was all for the fans in the stands....Bama won !!!!!

and as tommy stated...you seen like 85% of it...the rest was a pass, catch....and the whole corp ran off the field....

Not to many corps wanted to go on after us....even though they were better, the Bridgemen usually took the crowd at most of their shows....maybe didnt win the show but we got what we ALWAYS WANTED...."THE CROWD" !!!!!!! Most of the members in the corp would concur even now with the alumni corp....its wasnt about winning, it was about getting the people in the stands on their feet and enjoying what they see..... sure winning a ring is great, but how many get strangers come up to them " me as a lowly tenor player" and get asked for their autographs ? happened all the time....

at warmups...tons of people watching the corp warm up...it was like a mini show for us to get those people hyped up as they went into the show...

maaaaan I talked to much....sorry to bore you, but you brought up a favorite memory for me ....btw it was the 1st of 3 high drum wins in a row for the Bridgemen....just threw that in for ya :)

    Rick Tabor

  11. The two tenors on the left are my buds Rick Tabor and Edmund Mindiak.:cool:

I'm pretty sure Rick's last year marching was '78 and I know Edmund marched 1980, becauase I remember shaking his hand and his brother Donald's when they won the drum trophy.

Hey John hows it going buddy ?

My last year on the field was 1979 1980 and 81 i helped with the tenor line.......

    Hope to see you soon

    Rick

  12. The STINGER WAS A SUCESS. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED AND CAME TO THE SHOW. Bridgemen you were awesome and Cabs glad to have you back. Reilly and Archie and Sac we can always count on you. We sold out of everything in the kitchen and we are glad that everyone enjoyed the food.

I know you all are still resting after the show and party....a well deserved rest...!!

But I just wanted to let you know that this was my first performance at the Dixie Stinger with the Bridgemen, not knowing what to expect, all of the Yankee-Rebels should be proud as i know you are ...of the people that worked the show...you all are some of the nicest people i ever met !!!!!!! it seemed to me that I was at a family picnic not a drumcorp show !!!!

Being from the NYC area, its refreshing that people still take the time to BE NICE ..... my time at the Stinger will be remembered for sometime to come.... and I do hope that my corp will be there next year as I for one, will hope that we do ! The food was outstanding and plentiful !!!!! it seemed that you didnt run out of anything "specially diet pepsi's lol"

    Kudo's to the planners !!!

Thanking all of you for a great time

  13. Hey everybody!

Giving this one last shot...I believe that we are closing our ranks, after this weekend. We presently have over 120 members!

So, it's March 18th, (Happy 91st birthday (in Heaven), Mom! LOVE YOU!), and the Bridgemen are doing really, REALLY well!!!

We've got a great show, and our best corps, since we've gotten back together!

We still have a few openings that we're trying to fill, so if you're still interested in doing drum corps, but on a very limited schedule, (and budget), come down to Bayonne on March 21st, and see for yourself! We'll be rehearsing from 12 noon, until 6 pm, and then we have a St. Patty's Day Parade on Sunday, March 22nd.

We'll be rehearsing at St. Andrew's Church, 4th & Broadway, Bayonne, NJ 07002.

We currently have openings in our snare line, contra section, color guard, cymbal line, and the #4 bass spot might still be open, also.

We have a very simple, workable schedule. In fact, we only get together for rehearsals, or shows for 19 more days, TOTAL, until our season is over. That's less than THREE WEEKS of your time, for a chance to perform with the Bananas! And that's only 19 days out of almost 200, between now, and our last performance at the DCA Alumni Spectacular, in Rochester, NY!

Don't think you have the time?

    Think again!

Hope that you will come and check us out this Saturday, in Bayonne!
