  1. No, the big boys have licensing rights covered. They don’t show the band because of two reasons : 1) relatively nobody cares and 2) it would cut into advertiser revenue.
  2. First, I'm not asking for links or anything, just commenting on the absence of DCA videos on YouTube. Does DCA actively go after the videos or do people just not shoot anything? I use them as an advertisement on whether I want to go see a show or not. With the lack of videos, I never get past "remote interest". Maybe that doesn't matter because DCA is a pretty niche event.
  3. Are there limits on the wattage or number of speakers?
  4. This year, I'd be cool running the grill. I think that's more of a reflection on me than on DCI.
  5. And they have electric bass with a killer audition. If I were single, I'd love to give it a shot.
  6. Looking more like Cirque du Soleil. Not sure if that's a good thing or not, but Cirque du Soleil is still in business and doing well while Barnum and Bailey is defunct. Personally, I'd like to see a nod towards their traditional unis, but it really doesn't bother me too much. Just put something on the field (graphic or whatever) so that five years from now when I watch a video I'll be able to remember which corps it is. So, I dislike Troop's uniforms - too much of a deviation from traditional, but I absolutely loved SCV's last year. Maybe it's just that you take more of chance on love or hate of the uniforms for a given year when it's all new and abstract each year. I guess we just need lasers and fog machines, but please, please, please, no woodwinds.
  7. How about this? It was better after the renovation.
  8. The stadium guys are really, really picky. They would much rather not have the #### marching bands messing up their fields. So, to keep them at bay...
  9. Oh, I'm definitely part of the problem. I just don't go because I didn't find it to be a very enjoyable stadium. My honest to god favorite place was the Chambersburg PA high school. Great acoustics and you were close to everything.
  10. Generally it's between the white lines, including the white lines. That's where they're afraid that an 1/8" depression will cause a football player with a $35 million contract to trip and break their leg.
  11. Baltimore Ravens Marching Band for seven years - trust me, they never show the band. And I played electric bass so if the camera was anywhere in my general direction, it was on the guitars.
  12. It's been awhile since I've been there, but the seat numbers were made in a time when the American bottom was less "robust". Still the case?
  13. I enjoyed DCA finals at Annapolis. But, it was also super local for me and that may have factored into my enjoyment.I enjoyed DCA finals at Annapolis. But, it was also super local for me and that may have factored into my enjoyment.
  14. In two years, we'll have mainstream 5G networks, phones will be even better than the 4K capabilities we currently have, and the livestreaming capabilities from Facebook and others will be even better. Unless they confiscate cell phones at the gate, we'll just watch someone's live stream and Facebook et al have blanket licensing agreements for the content that is broadcast.
  15. There are actually three (main) parts. There is the upload from the event, the CDN (content delivery network) that distributes the feed and then your download over your ISP. This is also a simplification, but close enough.
  16. For finals, they're in an NFL stadium that has cutting edge connectivity. They just don't want to (or can't) pay for it.
  17. In a few years, with 5G rollout, we'll just watch someone's Facebook livestream of the event. Your iPhone (and droid) can do 4K video.
  18. A 4K stream requires around 24Mbps, 1080p, roughly 6Mbps, 720p about 4Mbps. Those numbers are on the high side assuming a higher frame rate. 4G LTE networks can give you over 5Mbps upload speeds. I would doubt that they're using satellite uploads as that's really expensive. I watched a behind the scenes video of their coverage of a FloSports cross country event and saw no indication of satellite equipment. Most likely a leased line and possibly cellular backup. I've been behind the scenes at NFL events and they have a huge production going on, multiple semis, fiber lines run all over the place, wireless frequencies controlled in stadium, etc. No satellite uplink though, the stadiums are equipped with high speed, redundant fiber optic lines. But, when 5G finally arrives, maybe they'll be able to better delivery of a higher bitrate stream. Then again, maybe the limitation is on the content delivery network and the associated costs for higher bitrate streams.
