  1. Not sure if you accidentally quoted the wrong person or I didn't explain well, but I think we're saying the same thing. In fact, I will no longer play music that has a G7 chord. (Sorry, gotta throw a little humor in because this is depressing.)
  2. The way the proposal is structured the G7 will be in a position for more visibility which means more sponsor money. They will have exclusive nights for super competitions which means more money for them and less for the non-G7 corps. While not impossible, in practice it will cement them as the top and make it extremely difficult for anyone else to break in. Should someone be able to break into the elite, there's always the 2/3 vote rule to help "correct" the situation. I'm not sure if this is a money grab or a power grab. Maybe they're both the same. I'm not sure how you think it's an insult to the judges.
  3. I think it's funny that Hop's blog: http://hopsblog2.livejournal.com/413482.html Where he quotes Lincoln in an obvious attempt to support the G7 action turns out to be fiction. http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/l/lincoln-quotes.htm How appropriate...
  4. I agree completely. But there is something in marching band that can draw people in. I've seen several consumer electronics stores use the showdown at the end of Drumline to draw people in. They'll play it on a big screen TV and crank the volume on the sound system. It's like moths to a flame and people will stand there and watch the entire showdown. Mainstream America likes something about marching band, but I'm not sure that we could ever attain the intensity of a choreographed scene from Hollywood.
  5. Instead of adding lasers, smoke machines, Taylor Swift videos and text voting to make the event more exciting why not make the individual shows more exciting? Stop writing for the judges and write the shows for the people in the stands. Even if you line up all the Hooters girls along the sideline, you're not going to get people to attend that have no interest in drum corps or marching band. It's a limited, fickle market so listen to them and if you give them a good, solid product they will come. They will buy your souvenirs and send you money during your donation campaigns. But if you shaft your loyal base, don't expect mainstream America to come and replace them in the stands. They don't care.

  7. Then maybe that's the problem. Actually, I'd argue that any activity that requires you to pay $3k to work 16 hour days all summer is by very definition not financially sustainable.
  8. You can get a lot of support from the community. Think of the support given by communities of NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB organizations. Hell, they'll build $350 million stadiums. Ignore your community and you're ignoring your potential best friend.
  9. So they're really proposing this for 2011?? There's no way in hell they'll get everything together in time to make a major change like this for 2011. They can't even put together an clean slide deck. The only thing worse than this being attempted is this being attempted in a half ### manner. Thanks to whoever leaked the document. You did the right thing.
  10. SCV 2000 "Age of Reverence" is my favorite drum corps show. To show how underrated it is, I was at Finals in 2000 and I didn't remember the show until I caw it on the Fan Network last year. How could I not remember Barber? I love that music... You know what, I just remembered why I don't recall the performance. When we went to Finals, I didn't know that there was a Vanguard and a Vanguard Cadets. We saw the Vanguard Cadets warming up near a truck that said Vanguard something, so that must be SCV, right? It just wasn't up to the SCV of years before. So when it was time for SCV to perform and my daughter wanted something to eat, I volunteered to get refreshments. SCV wasn't going to be that great this year... Ok, one of the more stupid things I've done. I missed *the* show for a hot dog and pop corn. Dude!!! I missed it for a hot dog and pop corn and I probably overpaid for the hot dog and pop corn.
  11. That pretty much sums up my thoughts. I don't know all histories of the various directors and their backgrounds nor the details of the politics involved. But as much as I try, I can't come up with a good outcome should this proposal pass. All along I thought that fuel prices would be the death of drum corps. Maybe it's just a ploy to make woodwinds seem like not such a bad thing??
  12. . [deleted - nothing bad, I was just 100% wrong in what I was saying.]
  13. Death of the smaller corps followed by the death of the activity all fueled by greed of the top 7. They want big stadium events. They'll start out "in addition" to the smaller events but fans will tend to go to the stadium events instead of the smaller venues. Not 100% of course, but in significant enough numbers to kill off the smaller events within a few years. Forgive me, but I'm not clear on the voting process for a proposal such as this. How many voting members are there and how many do they need? If they don't get the votes, will they do their own thing "in addition" to DCI? This is depressing...
  14. I think it sounds great. But one thing that struck me is that it sounds great even with all of the the reverb inside. Are they composing with LOS in mind or is that just coincidental? Really looking forward to Phantom's show.
  15. I can understand the university's stand. It's just like a job, if you can start when you're needed they'll hire someone else. Don't just post here, send a letter to DCI and express your concerns. Obviously it won't do anything this year but it may change policies in the future. Unless DCI has the schedule set in stone for LOS, which is very likely. Then you have to choose.
  16. I wouldn't worry about drum corps dying. DCI could, but that wouldn't mean that the corps would cease to exist.
  17. Check this robot mini corp: Obviously a nod to Crown's show complete with the green plume: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-mC1PkYbnM...feature=related
  18. In competitive cheerleading a fee is paid by the company that produces the music for the show, a lot of times that is fudged. A performance fee is paid by organizers of a competition and if that competition is to be broadcast, a special license is required. I'm not sure about the companies that record the performance, but I would guess that a portion of each sale goes to licensing. What's interesting, IMHO, is it seems very fuzzy is to whom you pay the licensing fee. ASCAP, BMI, everyone that represents anything music-related? I think it's silly that I can't use music in a video that I want to put up on YouTube. Give me a reasonable method to purchase a YouTube video use license for personal use. But instead, we're just told "No, you can't do that."
  19. At the risk of being a "me too", Phantom 2008 by far.
  20. Exactly, because there are football fans complaining that LOS is too quiet. Who do you think will win that argument??
  21. If it were in my hometown or close to it, I'd go. But for the price of tickets plus travel plus hotel, I'll just wait for the results. It's not like they will do something different at finals that's not done the rest of the year, it will just be a little better or a little worse and the judges will pick the winner and I'll wonder how the hell they made that decision. Forgive the run on sentence. Now if it was going to sound really good, that might tip the decision towards attending. Bottom line for me, too much effort for crappy sound.
  22. I think a large part of the Olympic success is rooting for "my" team. "My" team is easily defined by the people representing "my" country. If you haven't marched in a particular corps, there is little sense of "my" corps. There is very little variation in placement in DCI. Corps X beats corps Y and it will stay that way through the rest of the season (for the most part). So there's very little thrill of victory and agony of defeat. Right now before seeing any shows we can pick the top five corps with reasonable certainty. But the real killer is that everyone can relate to the Olympics more because everyone has participated in sports or skied or ice skated. Most people's experience with something close to DCI is their local high school's marching band and most of them are not the kind of organizations that inspire you to go out and see more. People can relate to the Olympics.
  23. IIRC, the last few years it was on PBS the only complete song was "On the Road Again".
  24. 20 contras is crazy. I can't wait to see it!!!!
  25. Sweet! I never knew this existed. I have it working on my iPhone now. Thanks!
