  1. A year of cheerleading costs more than a year of drum corps. The top cheer squads don’t go on “tour” but they usually fly to two or three competitions and do 6-8 more regional competitions that are drivable.
  2. Quality first followed by as much quantity that can live up to standards. As long as WC corps are having difficulty filling every slot they have, then there is no reason to add additional corps unless they think that by including woodwinds on field that gives more potential members to choose from and the potential to field 2-3 more WC corps not larger size, but additional members that can be spread around to fill out a few corps that step up from OC to WC.
  3. You're determined that there is a vast conspiracy. Encorps went from 60 something to 30 something members between 2018 and 2019. There are internal issues going on, not the evil all-powerful iron fist of DCI member corps, but it sound scarier that way.
  4. 1. Because next year it will be another rule or another corps. 2. They shouldn't, but the rules that would affect them are likely more major rule changes. A 55 member minimum isn't that high of a threshold. DCI wants a quality product on the field and with 30 member corps, it's going to be 8-10 color guard, 10 percussion, 10-12 horns. That just doesn't have the draw for ticket-paying fans. So they owe it to the fans and the other member corps that there will be a quality, entertaining show on the field. Some rules physically take more than a year to implement. Which rule(s) specifically are you speaking of?
  5. I've heard drum major and field conductor, but never heard drum majorette. It's probably been a 50/50 mix of male / female drum majors for me.
  6. Not every non-scholastic marching band venture is going to be successful. When one fails, maybe it's just a failure and not a vast conspiracy to ward off future competitors. My blues/covers band isn't playing Madison Square Garden and it's not because Jason Aldean is holding us down, it's because we suck and have a sub 400 likes on Facebook, so we're doing local bars aka Sound Sport.
  7. From 2018 to 2019 their number shrank noticeably. Solve that riddle and you have the reason why they decided to shut down.
  8. “Extortion” and “exposed” make it sound scary. I don’t understand how it’s difficult to understand that the corps are getting paid according to their draw.
  9. No thanks. But you have to set a threshold for what people are going to pay to see.
  10. But the transportation costs do not drop to zero and people still need to eat. When they get back, they still need a place to sleep. I just don't see where a WC corps will save money versus doing what they really want to do - play on the field or hone their show on the practice field. An OC corps or DCA corps with a more local presence could meet in the morning, go parading and then send people home at night. Then parades might be more profitable, especially if they could have everyone meet at the parade and only need an equipment truck. Getting four buses on a holiday weekend for 50 miles each way is going to cost $6k if not more.
  11. Tour math holds up for OC, but assumes best case for WC corps and ignore double sales. Those would be zero on parade day. Housing would likely be easier to obtain in conjunction with an event rather than a parade.
  12. Will it? Who among us has not looked at the schedule and decided that they can show up by 8:03 or whatever?
  13. It seems like you're proposing that the World Class member greatly limit themselves for the benefit of the Open Class and SoundSport participants? I don't think that has a chance of passing.
  14. https://www.dci.org/static/bylaws-policies-procedures Policy 216 states that it was updated Oct 2019. I don't have a revision history of the document to be sure that the 55 member requirement was announced then and not before, but I *think* that is when the membership numbers and financial requirements for moving up to World Class Participant / Member dropped.
  15. They definitely should have given them written notice as to their status. I'm not sure of the timing of the rule changes versus when they requested status clarification or the mechanics of how the members would vote. It would be the committee making the decision, not DA, right?
  16. But the rules state 55 members, they only had 39 in 2019 and were concerned that they wouldn't be able to field 55. It sounds like they wanted an exception. Maybe WGI is a better fit? You can get a lot more impact from 35 members indoors than outdoors in a full stadium.
  17. Agreed. You can do everything right and it still doesn't guarantee success, just a shot at it.
  18. Looking at Encorps' Facebook page - only 741 likes. Facebook has about a 2/3 penetration in the US, so extrapolate and about 1000 people like Encorps. The "big" corps have 150k-200k likes. Also looking at the 2018 YouTube vids versus 2019, they look like they dropped in size by a half. I don't know about their history other than that, but it looks like Encorps failed themselves rather than a vast DCI conspiracy.
  19. I get that DCI doesn’t want to dedicate a lot of resources to smaller corps. But if you can’t field 55 members, I wonder how serious your organization really is.
  20. I actually drove past Williamsport yesterday for the first time. Went to Milheim to see a friend play at the Elk Creek Cafe. Didn't realize that I'd be driving past Williamsport until I saw the name on the exit. So, I guess I'll drive longer than Williamsport to see bluegrass/nügrass, but decided not to go to Williamsport for DCA. I think two hours is my limit. BTW - Elk Creek Cafe is a hidden gem. Milheim is a town of ~800 people not really close to anything and the Elk Creek Cafe is really, really good. Great beer, great food, good sound system, great staff.
