What makes DCI of today musically inaccesible?
Mello Dude replied to WOOHOO's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Interesting, how many drum corps are doing silent drill teams? I mean they are VERY cool. -

Mello Dude replied to WOOHOO's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I personally think music should be weighted more because without a solid foundation the drill means nothing. So, in other words if the drill gets in the way of the music being played as it could be or should be music should take priority. -

Actually, I don't remember having to explain (to the then dino's) to anyone what the show was about in my 10 years marching junior corps. -

This. It's REALLY hard to appreciate most (not all) top 12 when you are driving down the road (listening) with absolutely no visual to support the music, when in reality (I believe) that the visual should be there to augment the music in all it's glory. -

What offends me? I don't think ANY corps has offended ME personally, but possibly quite a few of the original arrangers the music sprang from...ya. I suppose what offends me most is people telling me they get it and I'm too old and/or stupid to understand what is going on to enjoy it. This, of course, coming from some that have FAR less musical education and playing experience and only repeat what they are told to think from the people putting that mess on the field without having a knowledgeable base to draw from to draw their own conclusions. -

Why do I get the feeling of someone looking down their nose at me (and others) without a tata's worth of arranging or playing time? -

Well, I appreciate the people that apparently don't know anything about music chiming in. Good to see that DCI as it is today will have a few people that appreciate noise rather than music. -
What does Pioneer do now?...good question. Quite honestly, there is nothing WRONG with doing what they are doing now but, if it were ME making the decisions and I was OK with taking last spots I would #### well go back to G bugles, mylar heads, lose the electronics and do shows like Madison 95. If I am not gong to win I will make #### sure I have the kids getting butts out of the seats and at least feel good about everything they are doing by sheer performance and entertainment value.

Win +1 These are the same people that have a zillion posts espousing their supposedly superior intelligence regarding music on how much they think they know vs you. The funny thing about art is that it's pretty #### subjective (psst successful art is usually just liked by most for no other reason than they like it or don't). These people, of course, are the same people that failed to read or glean any wisdom from "The Emperors New Clothes" from grade school.

Has DCP ever changed your mind on something?
Mello Dude replied to Bruckner8's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Agree 100%. I would also add there are people that have never marched a day of corps, that have friends that run do things for an organization (corps) then use that as first hand knowledge/experience of what its all about. These same people discount others that have marched 8-10 years of junior corps as "irrelevant" and their opinions (based on a rather lengthy time in junior corps) the same. While at the same time elevating their opinions to equal to or greater than those that have actually done it. That is what I consider laughingly stupid and arrogant. -

Has Drum Corps Lost Its Soul

Ah Master! Looks like you have most of reality on ignore as well! LMFAO! Thanks for the enlightening response; as they say, "ignorance is bliss". -

LMFAO. I have never seen ANYONE on here waste so much time complaining about someone else complaining in my life. The idea of a forum is for ideas to be debated etc., not shut down because someone doesn't like what they read. I would consider YOU a prime example of a dino and not quite comprehending what forums and blogs are for. I have never seen a clear cut case of closed mind in my travels here on DCP. Just...amazing. -
Yes, you hate electronics, but...
Mello Dude replied to skywhopper's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Actually, no. The fact they were GOOD enough (unamped accoustic and guard) to overcome the EPIC fail is what is remembered. -
Has Drum Corps Lost Its Soul
Mello Dude replied to ColDan's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
..and how little you understand music and/or the propagation of sound and what is required to make it sound "GOOD" on a football field. It's not small change to say the least..but they try..and we have for the most part epic fail and ANOTHER expense that has to be endured to be considered "competitive". -
Precisely. The lies, distortions, mis-truths, ignorance, changing the story..whatever, make those instruments only good for outside playing and makes the resale MUCH less viable. While at the same time a start up corps using just regular band grade instruments (remember how we were all sold this bill of goods for those that are history lite) will be penalized for not having a "specially" made band instrument for drum corps or marching band..oh the irony.

Drum Corps Future and Smaller Corps
Mello Dude replied to JimF-LowBari's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
The Cadet Corps used to fill a VERY important role teaching new talent to feed into the larger corps. Today, talent is simply shipped into the area to form a corps. The days of a top corps supporting the local kids and community are over...and we can plainly see how wonderful that is going. -
Actually, to make a quick point. Drum Corps is a TYPE of band that falls under MARCHING band. It is ONLY uniqueness at this point is all brass percussion guard. If you add woodwinds you are simply a marching band and no longer a drum and bugle corps. Words have meanings FYI. One would assume DCI would have to drop the Drum and Bugle Corps name in this instance regarding corporation and branding. Actually, to anyone with a music background understands that YES it was unique on G bugles. The overtone series is quite different on those instruments giving G horns a unique and characteristic sound. IMHO, you are incorrect. Even an aircraft carrier take a while to stop after it's been torpedoed.

Favorite Decade of Drum Corps
Mello Dude replied to DrumManTx's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I would go with the 80's. Just huge leaps in the evolution of the activity without morphing into BOA. I mean, you can listen to endless tapes of TONS of corps and never get tired to listening to those music books. Not to mention, the corps seasons were an entire month longer than today and the local circuits were thriving.
