  1. THIS! Hopefully, being as introverted as drum corps is, they an see what stuff like this is doing to the activity as a whole. Rewarding, BORING, is not healthy, for anyone.
  2. Me too, as to why they are scoring so high for an incomplete show when it's almost July.
  3. No equipment?! Well WGI and DCI are pretty much there now...I say go all the way after this!
  4. But, they are supposed to be the best of the best playing? Yes, we can see how well corps are doing finance-wise by replacing horns after every 1 or 2 seasons. A GOOD musician can play a variety instruments in any key. Trumpets especially as we are required to play C,D Eb etc. The easy button seems to get pressed a lot in drum corps today, there is NO surprise here about mic'd brass at all. And again, this G vs Bb debate will never go away because we never had these issues to the degree we see them today. Volume of the horn line, soloists that can't be heard over a pit that is out of control, drums that don't project or have any sort of real musical identity (snares here). Bb instruments were a business decision, not a musical one. An identity lost is something hard to come back from. Many people from both sides had to weigh the good and the bad of dumping G horns...and year after year it looks to be a another bad decision that further makes drum corps NOT drum corps, IMHO. So, I will be putting my 88 BD music, with those terrible G bugles, on right now. Because I would rather listen to it than 2010 BD any day....you know I like listening to actual music...but I digress.
  5. I dunno, I and quite a few others leave the stadium empty a tad when a particularly annoying Cadet show comes on but will not leave when I see Madison.
  6. I was thinking that in the midwest area without Phantom and Cavies you could have a hell of a local circuit still. DCI Blue Stars Colts Madison Pioneer Glassmen Blue Coats Blue Knights (a little far) Troopers (a little far) DCA Kilts Govenairs Minn Brass Just a few...sorry if I missed anyone or the cadet corps.
  7. LOL, I wonder how many posts are for it compared to against it? Should be rather telling to see who protects the emperor in his new clothes.
  8. Not sure if this response was directed to me so, I will try and answer these..... 1) It's not semantics if you are calling DC a "youth activity" or speaking in the context thereof. Myself, and the US Government pretty much conclude that 18 is the difference between "kid" and young adult. 2) Life education can be gathered in MANY different ways. I learned A LOT about life and DC in DC...which of course helped quite a bit for marching band. To say DC is the be all and end all of "music education" is a bit of a stretch. Quite honestly, while learning LOADS about proper breathing and technique (and marching also etc...DC stuff), there is really little in reality between DC and the world of music IMHO. Did DC help me on my way...sure did. Did it teach me excellence..yes. Did it teach me more about music than school and life experience...no.
  9. God has this been used forever. Quite honestly, what defines kids anymore unless you go to a cadet corps show that actually has "kids" rather than young adults.
  10. Well, change isn't bad if that change doesn't morph into something we already have. Quite honestly DC is nothing more than a brass marching band, and we have had that for years. Change for the sake of change got us into the pickle we are today, but I won't delve into American politics. :). The problem I have with some people's definition of drum corps is that it's so amorphous and dare I say "open minded" to have no definition at all...which is a hell of a weird way to lead one's life but welcome to the modern American society. So, in essence, words have no meaning unless you can read minds.
  11. Nice link. Hard to really tell how it's gonna sound on the field in the gym. Hopefully the trumpet parts aren't buried with everything else going on. Aslo, IMHO if you are doing a performance, lose Dr Beat.
  12. Yes, and I applaud you on that, you were the ONE person that answered his question without questioning their ability to make a decision on purchasing 2 horns.
  13. Gee, and we wonder WHY DCP seems to come off like it does to outside people...perhaps remedial reading class should be required. OP AND Topic Topic: First sentence of OP: Responses: I mean folks you can't make this stuff up.
  14. The whole argument about creativity being squashed because it has to be in a particular medium (rules) is a COMPLETE lack of creativity, of that person(s) for a given medium. I'm sorry you have a judged art form that requires SOME rules to compete in to make sense. That is Drum Corps guys. It's like saying every painting that can and should be done CAN'T be done because of the limitations of canvas and paint. They could take a REAL lesson from watching the food network on the show Chopped. They are given a certain amount of time, a certain ingrediant list, and they are to make WONDERFUL food out of stuff that doesn't fit for what they are doing.
  15. See that would be a closer analogy than what you mentioned before but you still miss the mark. How many years DID you skate and did you do it competitively for 5-8 years? I also noticed they didn't motorize the board.
  16. per2100: Well, to make this a valid analogy, did you play 5-8 years of football with LSU?
  17. Heh! Well, you would want to stay away from Bb because the idea of falling to your death would be bad.
  18. I don't think I have ever met an individual, as much as you post on this subject, who cannot stand someone else having a viewpoint other than their own expressed. Quite honestly, it's nice to hear both sides rather than sticking your head in the sand, or surround yourself with "ditto" heads and wonder why you are losing your bread and butter fan base. Terrible way to go through life...... IMHO.
  19. 1981-1989 I picked these years cause corps changed so much in these 10 years.
  20. Somewhere in the show...you'll laugh, "Home Sweet Home" by Motley Crue Carrie Underwood
  21. jpaul wrote: Yet, drum corps and yes guard, is a judged competition. Someone is making these exact decisions, albeit probably not quite using that terminology. So yes, there is good and bad as judged by DCI, and yes in the end it DOES matter as reflected by the score. Is one considered a dino by pointing out reality?
  22. Actually, you are a selective progressive. Having benchmarks to compare something to, is how you define and measure progress. Appreciating everything you see without discerning taste and/or history to judge that "progress" isn't "progressive". Simply giving out the latest PC term for advancement or maturing (transformation) for the activity isn't a carte blanch term to not use past benchmarks as a comparison. The present can be put into reality by understanding human nature and the past. I dare say anyone who thinks BD's show last year (no offense to BD and a fine performance within the buildup score and rules per DCI) made any musical sense needs to go back to music 101. See, that's called discerning taste and reality, not a dino.
