  1. Congrats Mandarins on an absolute beast of a season.  Fav show of the year for me!

And, on an odd note, I'm so happy also that Brandt Crocker finally pronounced the show better! When I went into Stanford, I was pretty much blind on what all the shows were. I seriously thought he said Cinnamon. Then I heard similar pronunciation in Prelims and Semis... like Sinnermun.  Then I'd chuckle to myself because he would then pronounce the "Man" in "Mandarins" correctly.  I'm sure it's probably just regional accents and stuff but I found it funny.  Then in Finals, he said it correctly and it almost sounded like he had to catch himself from saying it incorrectly.

  2. Went to Stanford to see them this year... just WOW.

They have come so far from the first time I saw them in 2006 (I think?).  Their show just oozes bad@$$ery (or it could just be the fedoras).  And I absolutely LOVE the uniforms. They had a few fedora issues but perhaps it was a bit windy on the field and I'm sure they'll perfect it as the season progresses.

I just enjoyed this show from top to bottom.  Their color scheme just really pops ugh... just so good.  Fav show of the night for sure.

  3. CORRECTION:

Here is the caption spread that each corps needs to have from the current leader to surpass them on Finals Night:

    GE Leader: BD

    • BAC > BD by 0.925
    • Bloo > BD by 1.675

    Visual Proficiency Leader: BD

    • Bloo > BD by 0.175
    • BAC > BD by 0.625
    • Crown > BD by 0.925

    Color Guard Leader: BAC

    • BD > BAC by 0.425
    • Crown > BAC by 1.075

    Brass Leader: BD

    • Crown > BD by 0.375
    • BAC > BD by 0.675
    • Bloo > BD by 0.875

    Percussion Leader: BD

    • Bloo > BD by 0.075
    • SCV > BD by 0.225
    • BAC > BD by 0.625

The predictions at the bottom chart are unscientific.  Basically it's showing, except Percussion, that any corps that's currently trailing caption leader... If they were to get a perfect score for caption and win the caption, the current caption leader would have to score, at most, what's entered (sorry if I am not very articulate)

For example, in GE, for BAC to overtake BD, they would have to score a perfect 40 at Finals and BD would have to score a 39.050.  Barring any catastrophe, that is unlikely to happen.

The only caption that seems to be very competitive is Percussion.  All others seem to be "in the bag."  Again, completely unscientific and probably ignorant predictions.

I was trying to think of any of the attending corps' recent shows that may fit with that style of tour shirt, and the only thing I could think of where a tree could apply would be SCV's Force of Nature show. Can't seem to find anything on their shop, though.

Thanks for looking!  That would have definitely been a good guess.

  6. Let me preface that I wasn't able to take a picture on time so I am purely going on description only.  And unfortunately, I saw this from a distance so all I have is a fairly vague description but it was an awesome T-shirt!

This guy was wearing a black t-shirt that had a multi-colored tree that looked like it was styled like a subway system map.  The lines represented the branches but they were all different colors.

Think of these two images combined:

The tree had a pretty close shape to the Golden State Warriors' "The Town" logo:

But the lines representing the branches were like this:

I am only guessing that this is a corps tour shirt but I wasn't able to see words or corps logo.  I only caught a quick glimpse.

  7. Mandarins... I just want to say.  I LOVE YOU.

It feels like it's been so long since I've seen a show live and Mandarins were the first (and only show) to floor me.

That ending had me tear up a bit.  Reminded me so much of that mello sustain by Vanguard in their championship show.  Based on the scores, they are poised to place decently high in Finals.

Hands down, best show of the night.  I arrived just before intermission.

    THANK YOU MANDARINS!

  8. From the e-mail:

Over the course of two weekends in June, a team of Vanguard designers, staff and performers came together to produce Vanguard's 2021 program, "Wait For Me." This 7:30-minute film, set to the simple and sentimental piece by Galen Hooks, journeys our performers back together after two long years apart. The project celebrates the heart of our members and our community, as well as their commitment to each other during these times of adversity. It is this strength that ensures Vanguard's presence remains strong and forward-moving throughout the activity. "Wait For Me" is set to premiere at DCI's Celebration this Saturday, August 14th!

This show needs to be seen live before fair judgments can be made.  I've watched the flo video plus some others that are floating around and they just don't do it justice.  I think this hornline has a better ensemble sound NOW than they did at finals last year.  They sound like everybody else in the videos, but when you're sitting in front of them and they hit that first impact, you're just floored by how incredible they sound.  I can't imagine what they'll sound like as the season progresses.

I made the "pajamas" observation the first time I saw their uniforms as well but if you sit up close, they look better.  But, frankly, you should be sitting up close to watch this corps anyway.  You'll be missing a lot of the detail otherwise.

I'm looking forward to seeing them put the closer on the field.

Side note:  There's a reason Mandarins are getting the love they're getting right now.  They're really good.

After watching it live at Stanford and even on YT, their hornline is definitely a cut above the rest. And I'm hearing that with no music educational background.  Usually it's difficult for me to notice the quality  differences between the top groups. They are danged good.
