  1. I don't know if anyone ever posted this before... and if I am totally wrong about this, please don't bash me! I just heard it and I was like, "hey, he seems to be singing about Phantom!" I'll explain.. I may be taking this out of context of the actual meaning of the lyrics, but eh, this is what I thought. "The Black Parade" When I was a young boy, My father took me into the city To see a marching band. He said, "Son when you grow up, would you be the savior of the broken, the beaten and the darned [expletive edited]?" He said "Will you defeat them, your demons, and all the non believers, the plans that they have made?" Because one day I'll leave you, A phantom to lead you in the summer, To join the black parade." #1: I think I've heard people before say how DCI Corps are not marching bands, just imagine it for a second or something when reading the lyrics... #2: Phantom, in my opinion when watching some of their past shows, seems to have been darned [expletive edited] to 2nd place when their shows were just plain AWESOME; thus, they were broken, beaten, etc. #3: "Will you defeat them,/your demons..." Perhaps the Blue Devils, whom (or who?) they tied for 1st for their first and so far, only Championship? Demons synonymous with Devil... #4: "A Phantom to lead you in the summer" No need to explain there... #5: "To see a marching band" Well, no, maybe they are not a marching band, but the words "drum corps" probably wouldn't have fit there.... #6: The father, could have in theory, been a member of PR in the past and took his son to inspire him to join in the future. #7: "To join the black parade" Phantom, darkness, and if I am right, they used to wear all black uniforms, which supports the theory above, that his father was with PR. #8: "and all the non believers..." Like sports, some people "hate" a group/team because they are rivals. Also, members of other corps will truly believe they themselves will win; therefore, not believe in any other team winning. #9: "He said 'Son when you grow up/would you be the savior..." Perhaps drum major? Future corps director? Anyway, what do you think? This is just something to talk about during the offseason... Analyze away!!
  2. Sigh... I wish I got into music at a much earlier age! All of this technical talk and pure awesomeness of everything just gets me going! Maybe the Renegades can be my first target... I'm going to be 21 in January (age-out right?) and there is NO WAY that I have the talent to compete in any corps right now. I've talked to some people with the Renegades and they said that I should try out regardless of my skill. I've been only playing an instrument for 3 years total! Off topic for sure so... very great to see SCV's and everyone else's potential! Too bad summer seems SOOOO far away right now! BTW: 04 SCV is what got me into DCI and will forever have a place in my heart... Just... absolutely..... awesome Blue Devils feet/lower body work: Based on assumption on how lower body work/clean feet should be, BD is DEFINITELY great and VERY clean compared to some others I see. There is a part in BD's 06 show, between the 10minute mark and 10:20 mark (based on the DVD multi-cam show), they did something that I personally thought was very nice'n'clean... if anyone can check, is that what was being talked about earlier?
  3. In general, which "group" is the most alienated within a drum corps? Now I am not trying to start anything negative at all or anything but the question comes from my backstory... When I was in high school, I gained my entrance into music through colorguard/auxiliaries. We were, honestly, the most alienated group from the team, if that makes any sense. There would be ongoing jokes about us or the band just generally disregarded us as anything important. In short, they disrespected us. My quest was to eventually become a part of percussion, which I finally did in my senior year. I mean, I know that the backstory to my question can'/should be seen as typical high school [expletive acronym deleted] immaturity; however, alienation of groups prevail in modern society so I can imagine that groups within the microcosm of drum corps can potentially be alienated as well. I don't have experience, unfortunately, in drum corps whatsoever so I really don't have any idea if that happens. It happens at work, that's for sure... Any thoughts?
  4. Does anyone out there wait until finals to watch a show of ANY drum corps? I can imagine someone from refraining to watch a show until finals so it won't "spoil" the show if that makes any sense. If I had the patience, I would most definitely wait until DCIWC to watch the shows, that way I wouldn't be "biased" and what not. In reality though, I can't do that, I HAVE to see a show! For 2007, I plan to go to a June show, then the Stanford show, then the finals in Pasadena! Well, Pasadena is probably unlikely... ah well. So what do you think?
  5. do drum corps ever ask any members before or duringthe season to switch instruments that the director may feel they are better at? you know.. like the NFL and how they swtch players to different positions even though they have played teir position practically their entire life+?? thanks!
  6. Quick question... who is Sly and how is he/she historically? What's his/her technique? I really don't know, sorry. = Me = Inexperienced one
  7. Hey whats up? Yeah, I used photoshop to create that montage (thanks for getting me the right word for it cuz I've been thinking of one for a while and came up empty) I still need to change The Academy's logo because I coudln't find it; however, someone told me of a place I can find it and I'll change it soon, probably when I finish finals! Any requests? Any modifications I should make to it? Eh, off topic, sorry.
  8. COOLEST DRILL: The Cavaliers Santa Clara Vanguard EXTREMELY CLEAN DRILL (at least to me): Blue Devils Phantom Regiment HONORABLE: Bluecoats Carolina Crown SURPRISES: Bluecoats - At first, honestly, I thought their show was kinda boring; however, I was really sleepy when i watched it. When I watched it on the DVD, man oh man, their show was pretty cool! Loved the music and drill! DVD Critiques: They need to shoot this in HIGH DEF AND/OR AT LEAST 16:9 aspect ratio!! Widescreen will look AWESOME and we will definitely see MUCH more of the field. The camera seemed to be a bit close; thus, I was not able to see much of the colorguard movements. FAVORITE: Santa Clara Vanguard - Again, like the pre-dvd poll I posted, it was dizzying and darn cool. CHECK OUT THE RESULTS FROM THE PRE-DVD POLL Favorite 06 Drill? (Pre-DVD Release), Top 12 Corps
  9. SWEET DEAL! I just got a HUGE parking ticket today ($250) and seeing this email and playing with my new Nintendo has definitely made up for that ticket.... Now I'm just broke. Here comes Xmas.
  10. D-I DVDs are COMING!! WOOT WOOT! I just recieved my confirmation email! Edit: Ack, it's just a confirmation email saying they charged me.... but still.. GETTING CLOSER TO SHIPMENT! Sorry if I got too far ahead of myself :(, I've been so anxious is all.
  11. I haven't read all of the arguments here but tradition is cool but equal opportunity is the key! They should try to have an all-female corps... is there already such a thing?
  12. GO EUROPE! I love watching videos of awesome corps in Europe! Hopefully Cavaliers make videos out of it like BD did back in 05. Was there a corps that went to Europe this year? I don't remember.
  13. Ah yes, but dreamers are the most dangerous as we live life pursuing it as everything is possible. The pessimists, ah the hell... I swear I've heard or read something like that in the past... I dream to go to Pasadena next year!!
  14. I've always wanted to see PR and Cavaliers in live action... can't go to Pasadena next year unfortunately :(... nor can I go to AZ. Ah well, BD, SCV, Cadets and so much more! Woot!
  15. If you had a choice, WITHOUT considering money, distance, etc. which one would you rather go to? Which show would you rather see? I personally pick DCI PHOENIX because there are several corps performing that I've always wanted to see and it will be a while before that happens because I won't be able to attend DCI World Championships at Pasadena. DCI West Lineup: Blue Devils Santa Clara Vanguard Bluecoats Bluenights The Cadets Crossmen Glassmen Mandarins Seattle Cascades Troopers Vanguard Cadets Blue Devils B Blue Devils C DCI Phoenix Lineup: The Academy Blue Stars Boston Crusaders Carolina Crown The Cavaliers Colts Esperanza Madison Scouts Pacific Crest Phantom Regiment Pioneer Southwind
  16. Sorry if this has been posted before! Admin, please close if so. I am pretty unfamiliar with the etiquette/rules/standards of DCI so here is a question of mine... Do Division II/III Corps get judged on a more lenient scale when compared to Division I Corps? I would assume "no" because there are less age differences; thus, overall experience should be the same. Please correct me if I am wrong!! If "Yes," what would the curve be? Thanks! Oh and the reason why I ask is because high schools, at least when I was there which wasn't too long ago, schools were separated by band size and as far as I knew, we were all scored on the same basis.
  17. GEEZ, all of this sounds amazing!!! I wish I got into DCI much earlier! I have been only watching for a few years and have watched some classic shows. Here is my list... SCV's final push in 1989 Bottle Dance Cavies Drill in the past couple of years don't know don't know Next conquest... get all of those DVD's of previous Championships! Save save save!
  18. Hey everyone, I'm really bored at work so I decided to do this... Comparison: Baseball & Drum Corps! The Cavaliers: Region: Chicago White Sox - Well, the Cubs can't be related to them because they haven't won anything, like ever. Historically: New York Yankees - The Dynasty!! Boston Red Sox - 3rd Most Championships in DCI history Reputation: LA Dodgers - I'm a Giants fan so go figure :) Overall: New York Yankees - Most Championships in the decade The Blue Devils: Region: Oakland Athletics - They've won and were a dynasty. SF Giants - They, to me, seem to have a white collar feel about em. Historically: New York Yankees - The most championships in DCI History! Reputation: New York Yankees - The Godfather, Jazz, Gangster Chronicles(?) Overall: New York Yankees - The Evil Empire! (just kidding) - Ties to the city by music, pop culture, and attitude. Santa Clara Vanguard: Region: Oakland Athletics - They've won and were a dynasty also. Historically: NY Giants/Cincinnatti Reds/Pittsburg Pirates - 4th Most Championships in DCI history Reputation: St. Louis Cardinals - Incredibly classy and honorable Overall: St. Louis Cardinals - Great fans, incredibly knowledgable, classy, with a history of winning. Phantom Regiment: Region: Chicago Cubs - Not meant in a bad way, but they WILL get new rings one day. Historically: Chicago Cubs - Although they don't have the rings to show it, they are incredible and get VERY close to winning. They will one day. Reputation: Chicago Cubs - Die-Hard fans, great attitude, classic! Fan favorites! Overall: St. Louis Cardinals - Great fans, incredibly knowledgable, classy, with a history of winning. Make your comparisons!!! Am I right? Wrong? Don't hurt me if I'm wrong... :)
  19. I know the DVD hasn't come out yet, but from what you have seen to this day, which corps' drill did you like the most? For me, it was a tie between SCV and Cavaliers. Also, if this has already been posted, please remove or give me a link to the topic. I couldn't find one. When I watched SCV's drill when the Quarterfinals were playing in the theatres, their drill, at least to me, was sorta dizzying and cool. The Cavaliers' drill was funny, cool, and matched the theme very well. BD & PR had some really cool formations but didn't quite please me as much as the top two.
  20. Has a judge during a show ever accidently trip or cause an accident (like not getting out of the way in time) during a show? If so, has it ever happened at a finals performance? And if something like that does indeed happen, what happens to the corps/judge? Consequences? Penalties? So far from what I've seen, I have never seen something like that happening; however, I've been a fan for only 3 years. i hope it never happened/s but when I watch some of the judges on the field, it seems like there are some close calls.
