  1. my college band, the Syracuse University Marching Band (SUMB) applied but unfortuanately did not get chosen, we got beaten out by two groups from inner city NYC
  2. and here at SU, our freshman initiation is whats called the Dome Stomp and its harmless, what happens is all the rookies have to stand in the grooves of the carrier dome and jump and stomp on the ground after being told a story about something that happened when the dome was first built, I remember me and all the other freshmen in my group were really scared at first thinking that they were gonna do something to us and thought the upperclassmen were gonna ambush us in some way but after it happened, we had nothing more to worry about
  3. Being a college band member myself (Syracuse University MB, The Pride of the Orange) we were told at the beginning of the year that if our director had even any reason to believe that hazing or anything of the sort is going on, our director said he would immediately hand over the case to the Office of Judicial Affairs or the Syracuse Police Department (Not SU Department of Public Safety). I'm surprised a band with such traditions as Wisconsin did not have these strict guidelines. Also is that stuff about the Bluecoats really true, I've heard several stories about it
  4. Yea that and the fact that the corps wants to move back to the Northeast
  5. I am totally aware of that as I am trying out there myself, but I've also heard from a member of their staff that they are at the same time trying to move the corps back to New England in the next few years.
  6. can you make a 7th Regiment one please, that would be sweet!
  7. Not to mention, the Glassmen are also in Ohio and they are pretty respectable too, you might want to consider them as well
  8. Hey, since your from the Syracuse area, I could be of some assistance, Boston Crusaders are holding auditions in Rochester, maybe you should try that as well, and also I am a freshman at SU and marched 7th Regiment last summer and if you like I can help you out if you would like to take a look at 7th despite it being a hike from where you are, PM me though if you want more info
  9. at the Rome, NY show this year, 7th Regiment got announced as the Spartans despite the announcer making the opening announcement welcoming 7th to the field
  10. I'd love to go but I'd hate to see the game seeing as our football team just lost to Akron yesterday and is pretty much the worst team in the NCAA and USC is like what # 3, it would be horrible
  11. Actually, things have changed, the last time they went to a bowl game, I think everything was provided and payed for by SU. But now that our football team is where its at, which is pretty much at the bottom of the NCAA (they lost to Akron yesterday!!!) they have pretty much given up on the band
  12. Cool, I play Bass 2 in the SU drumline, I cant wait to see Joe Pa and the Nittany Lions in the Dome even though their gonna kill my beloved Orange, we're all looking forward to basketball season here at SU
  13. point being, it also depends on how much your university cares about you as well in order to spend a good amount of money on you
  14. [quote name='jwillis35' date='Sep 6 2008, 08:57 AM' post='2383489 Travel is another issue. Most college bands, even the big schools, cannot go to many away games. It costs an extraordinary amount of money, because you don't have public funded school buses and such, we must get charters. Our band needs 3 of them, so on average we need $3,000 or more just to leave campus, and another $500 or more to feed the kids if we are gone for any length of time. So it depends on your budget. Agree but at the same time, my band here at Syracuse almost never travels, i've asked some of the seniors and they've said they've traveled to if they're lucky one away game a year. Needless to say however, Syracuse is a wealthy university with many rich benefactors and they can afford to get two coach buses to take our awful football team from their practice facility to a hotel two miles from campus, put them in a hotel over night and feed them and then use the coach buses to transport them back from the hotel to the Carrier Dome and then from the Carrier Dome back to their apartments in South Campus, if they can afford this they can afford to send the SUMB to at least one away game, it would actually be putting coach buses to good use rather than using them as a shuttle for our awful football team
  15. Hey, cant wait to see the Blue Band next week at SU, are you guys gonna be there, I know your football team will destroy us
  16. GO STATESMEN, CRANK IT OUT!!! best of luck especially to two members of the Syracuse University Marching Band (SUMB) who are out there tonight with them, both of whom I am proud to call my friends and colleagues. GOOD LUCK EMPIRE, from your supporters at the SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY MARCHING BAND, THE PRIDE OF THE ORANGE!!!
  17. on tour with 7th Regiment 2008 A tornado siren goes off during a test, one visual tech suddenly announces: You hear that, thats the suck alarm During Ensemble Rehearsal announcing letter C to G in the closer, Lets take it from Cyphillus to Guanaria (spelling) After a successful rep of that segment: "Hornline, if shouting the name of an STD will make you play it that well, then by all means just wait until the show tommorow, RESET!
  18. Agreed, their drumline is one of the cleanest, most consistent drumlines in all of DCI
  19. or at least thats what every school that only values its football team says
  20. Yea, marching does destroy grass doesnt it? lol
  21. Howabout New York City Do Open Class at Hofstra U. in Uniondale, Long Island, do World Class at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ More than enough hotel space plus lots of activities (Broadway shows, Mets, Yankees, Central Park, Museums, Met Opera etc. etc.) Its a potential gold mine, why hasnt DCI thought of it? One problem is: in Uniondale the area around Hofstra maybe getting restructured due to the Long Island Lighthouse Project that is being pushed for by the town of Hempstead and the New York Islanders and their owner Charles Wang which would include a rebuilding of the complex that includes the Nassau Coliseum which is directly adjacent to Hofstra's campus Another Problem: The New York Giants hold practice at Giants Stadium in a bubble right next to the stadium itself, it would be unclear whether or not Giants Stadium is available at that time
  22. Idea...Bring Championships to NYC hold Open Class Championships at Hofstra U. in Uniondale on Long Island and hold World Class at Giants Stadium (Home of the Super Bowl Champs woo!!!) in East Rutherford NJ More than enough hotel space, plenty of activities (Broadway shows, Mets, Yankees, museums, shopping, dining) Its a gold mine
