  1. Ahhh... the life a volunteer. Been there. I helped CPI for two weeks and only saw 3 out of 7 shows. I guess 3 is better then none.
  2. I don't have a picture of it but FMM and friend of mine has a licence plate that says: SPLOOIE I am sure the Sec. of State of Illinois had a hard time trying to figure out if this was an offensive word or not.
  3. 70's - 76 BD. Before this year drills were lines, echelons and files. 76 BD changed all that. 80's - 84 Garfield. Haven't been too big of a fan since but they were awesome in 84. 90's - 91 Star. Again, not a fan but they raised show design to another level. 00's - 02 Cavaliers. After years of fine tuning, took what Star did to another level.
  4. I think eveyone questioned the turnover in staff and management. Seems like their replacements are doing quite well in giving the boys a show that can win it all, dontcha think? I had no doubt especially since Mr. Gaines is still there doing his usual excellent work.
  5. My obvious choice is the Green Team but in all honesty I think BD will get a little stuck in the mud from here on out. Cavaliers, CC and Cadets will gain on them with the best performance winning on August 14th.
  6. As much as I disliked the Guardsmen (except a few that I dated :) ) I have to agree with you. That hornline in 79 was freakin' awesome.
  7. I think it was 77 since I don't think we had the "pickle" flags in 78.
  8. Since I married a Suncoaster, my answer is obvious. But a CLOSE second was 27th
  9. Interesting. People were saying that The Cavaliers style was stale as early as June. Seems things have changed pretty drastically.
  10. Here is a sampling of some "predictions" done early June: BD won't place lower than 2nd. Cadets won't be out of the top 4. The Cavaliers won't be in the top 5. crown phantom bd scv cavies cadets bluecoats boston madison blue stars blue knights glassmen Carolina Crown Blue Devils Cadets Santa Clara Vanguard Phantom Regiment Cavaliers Bluecoats Boston Crusaders Madison Blue Stars Glassmen Blue Knights BD- anyone who bets against them any year is naive. SCV- returns to elite status. Cadets- difficult and dirty. again. Bluecoats- another 06-like year. Crown- it's a long way to the top if you want to rock n' roll. Cavaliers- more turnover means the slide continues. Crown- On their current course since 04, this should be their year Cadets- If they continue in the same fan-friendly in your face drum corps show style from 09, theyll continue to be a favorite. BD- just not enough adsurbity in this year's show to pick up 14. SCV- (is the vanguard yell back this year?) Blue Stars- Frank Sullivan taking over brass, and Aungst taking over percussion= continued improvement Cavies-offseason changes mean a temporary drop for cavaliers Crown Santa Clara Vanguard Blue Devils Cadets Phantom Regiment Cavaliers (style change will confuse people at first)
  11. I agree with this. This topic has been discussed MANY times before on this site. I don't want to spend time searching but I believe anything that is subjectively scored is not a sport. Not saying that athleticism isn't required those activities (gymnastics, cheerleading, figure skating, drum corps, etc.) but I don’t consider them sports.
  12. I cheated but it was not Vince L. From Wiki: Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing is a well-known quote in sports. It exemplifies a form of unfettered competitiveness that has permeated American sports. Its assertion about the importance of winning has been touted as a basic tenet of the American sports creed and, at the same time, singled out as encapsulating what is purportedly right with competitive sports. It is attributed to UCLA Bruins football coach Henry Russell ("Red") Sanders, who spoke two different versions of the quote. In 1950, at a Cal Poly San Luis Obispo physical education workshop, Sanders told his group: "Men, I'll be honest. Winning isn't everything. (Long pause.) Men, it's the only thing!"[1] In 1955, in a Sports Illustrated article preceding the 1956 Rose Bowl, he was quoted as saying "Sure, winning isn't every thing, It's the only thing."[2] This credo has served as counterpoint to the well known sentiment by sports journalist Grantland Rice that, it's “not that you won or lost but how you played the game," and to the Modern Olympic creed expressed by its founder Pierre de Coubertin: "The most important thing . . . is not winning but taking part (in the Games).” The quote is widely attributed to American football coach Vince Lombardi; who probably heard the phrase from UCLA coach Henry Russell Sanders.[3] Lombardi is on record using the quote as early as 1959 in his opening talk on the first day of the Packers’ training camp.[3] The quote captured the American public's attention during Lombardi's highly successful reign as coach of the Packers in the 1960s. Over time, the quote took on a life of its own. The words graced the walls of locker rooms, ignited pre-game pep talks, and echoed from the rafters of banquet halls. According to the late James Michener's Sports in America, Lombardi claimed to have been misquoted. What he intended to say was "Winning isn't everything. The will to win is the only thing."[4] However, Lombardi is on record repeating the original version of the quote on several occasions, cited by Overman (see Bibliography). Vince Lombardi is so notorious as a winning coach that the Super Bowl trophy is named the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

  14. Yes she is BUT, trust, me no one would want the cute little thing in the stands sitting next to them. She is a VERY active, vibrant 2 1/2 year old (just like her dad ) and wants to talk to everyone around her. She has a habit of striking up conversations during the quietist parts of shows. We are little tired of those dirty looks that drum corps fans are so famous for. And add my wife, (born in Queens NY) is not one to hold back her feelings when someone looks at our daughter even just a tad sideways..... well, it ain't pretty. Indy will be fine because the wife and I can pass off the little one between us and we would still get to see almost every corps. I do get to your neck of the woods so I'll keep in touch.
  15. Stef, Great job as usual. I was not there last night but my better half was. Since I haven't seen a show yet there seems to be something wrong with seeing a show without my Green Team first. Plus, someone had to stay home with the little one. Added, my wife is a fan of The Maroon Team. Me, well, not so much but she loved their show as she always does. I'll form my own opinion since she 98% of the time focuses on the the guard being a former guard gal herself. Yep 90 SUCKs. On it a lot now that my job takes me up into Cheeseland. Call you soon when I am up there! See you in Indy!!
  16. I wasn't there but I heard that the ovation for the Cavalier Step-over w/hesitation in Monreal in '81 was pretty loud and long.
  17. Ahhh..... Whitewater. I need to drive up there soon to relive some great times there. A friend of mine who is also a FMM of The Cavaliers stayed in Whitewater recently for a Dave Matthews concert in nearby East Troy (Alpine Valley). He drove to the campus just to walk up that famous hill again.
  18. Cleaner and ending is a work in progress but taking shape.
  19. I think that everyone who were saying The Green Team was: 1) Looking at 6th to 8th place 2) having issues due to staff turnover 3) not loud enough 4) too dirty 5) presenting a disjointed show will be eating their words after tonight and Saturday. Obviously because of my drum corps roots, I will sitting back and ing
  20. Just asked her and yes she does. It's broken but she still has it packed away in her "old drum corps stuff" box. Doesn't everyone have a box like that?
