I believe the penalties were for being overtime. The staff was continually tinkering with the show all summer and left too much in the show. The penalty for overtime is one tenth for every three seconds of overtime.

A Great Article on The Cadets
traverbanking replied to Terri Schehr's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
The judge gave exclusive rights to the name "27th Lancers Drum and Bugle Corps" to the Bonfiglios. However, the judge refused the Bonfiglios' further request to forbid the Light Brigade from playing "Danny Boy". The judge explained that the court should not involve itself in artistic decisions like repertoire. -

In 1981, the Madison PBS station, which was producing the annual PBS presentation, did not want to deal with the cross-border aspects of producing its presentation from Montreal. So, instead, they broadcast the finals of the DCI-Whitewater contest. -

In '75 there were two field percussion judges. I believe there was a contest where one of the two field percussion judges found zero ticks for the Muchachos. -

Jim, The reason that the Boston Crusaders had to resort to calling themselves the Boston Drum and Bugle Corps for several years in the mid-80s is because the former corps director who legally owned the name "Boston Crusaders" withdrew permission for the corps to use that name because the corps in the early 80s flew the corps to Europe and the check given to the airline bounced. It took several years to sort this all out. There was a court trial. Eventually the former corps director gave the corps permission to use the name "Boston Crusaders". -
The infantry (soldiers who marched on foot) used fifes because it takes both hands to play a fife. The cavalry (soldiers who rode a horse) needed one hand to hold the reins of the horse, so they could not play fifes. They played bugles.

Will DCA be around in 5 years?
traverbanking replied to GetOFFmyDot's topic in DCA - All-Age Corps Discussions
World Class - 86-128 members Open Class - 65-85 members Class A - 26-64 members -
One of the reasons the junior corps left the VFW and the American Legion was their refusal to go to full-show prelims. DCI had full-show prelims since their beginning in 1972. DCA continued with the American Legion policy of shortened-show prelims through the 1976 season, In 1977, DCA changed to full-show prelims.

I believe the explanation for the VIP pass is as follows: Every inductee into the DCI Hall of Fame is given a life-long VIP pass which gives the inductee free admission to all DCI contests. Since the pass allows admission without a seat assignment, perhaps there is a designated area for such VIPs to watch the contest. It appears that GH did not surrender his VIP pass when he was removed from the Hall of Fame.

On page 46: Each corps must have a minimum membership as defined in the DCI Rules Manual, Contest Rules and Regulations, 1.0 Eligibility, 1.3.2 Corps Membership for Open Class Has a DCI Rules Congress voted a change from '30' to '50'? -

I believe the raised minimums (one minimum for open class, a higher minimum for world class) pertain to corps that have to go through DCI evaluation. Current corps have been "grandfathered" unless, for some reason, a corps has been ordered to go through evaluation. As far as I know, the corps minimum of 30 is still the competitive minimum. -
