Some questions to members of the Cadets
Drumcorpsfan471 replied to MisterA's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
When you joined Cadets in the year that you did, were you aware of the direction they were going to be taking? Were you aware there were going to be major controversies surrounding the corps? When I joined, I knew the direction we were headed. I LOVED the 2005 show, and I knew that the Cadets had a history of pushing the limits of the activity, so I was comfortable with it. Were you ever stunned by the booing by some of the crowd after a performance, especially when you knew how great you had performed? The only time I was ever surprised by the boo's was quarterfinals 2007. If you would have known how your season would turn out(and I am not talking about placements at finals, but at the controversy), would you have still joined the corps? Absolutely. I loved everything about being a Cadet. Do you ever regret marching Cadets? Absolutely not. Never have, and never will. And last, if you could say a couple of things to some of the people who have had such negative reactions to the shows, what would you say to them? Everyone is entitled to their opinion good or bad. I would just say try to keep an open mind about it. There are a lot of good things in each of those shows if you are willing to look for them. Did you ever really care about all that stuff, or did you just want to be the best your could be?! There is a quote from Marc Sylvester that sums up how I felt about everything. "It's not about scores or who you are going to beat - it's about whether you are going to be the greatest Cadet corps of all time. Whether you will have the performances of '83 or '93, whether you will have the proficency of '85 or '98 or the passion of '89 or '87. Will you have the intensity of '92 and the tradition of '90 or will you be able to connect with the crowd like in 2000 or 2002. That's what is important now - not what some one else is doing, but whether you are going to choose to be legendary." -Marc Sylvester Hope this helps! For Holy Name Shall Always Be -
I'm in the middle of it as well, and I really do love it. That being said, you really have to be careful with it though. There are a lot of high impact moves and different variations that haven't been exactly friendly on my drum corps knees. All in all I do think it would benefit people to do it (I mean realistically nothing is going to prepare you 100% for spring-training, but every little bit of preparation is going to help).

Bringing back memories of weekend camps....
Drumcorpsfan471 replied to bccadet09's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Mine is when I was traveling to a Spirit camp in '04. Basically it was about a 2 hour drive to Jacksonville from my house, so I left right after school. As I was getting down the road a bit, I got really REALLY sleepy. Well I try turning the radio up, rolling down the window, etc....but nothing worked. I kept feeling my eyes close, and next thing I know I feel a huge bump. Apparently I fell asleep and drove into the median. Luckily I didn't hit anything or mess up my car or anything. The best news was that i veered into the median, and NOT the other direction....cause there was about a 50 foot drop. Scary stuff. But I had a great camp from what I remember! -
So I ran across this on facebook today. http://apps.facebook.com/chasecommunitygiv...harities/373167 If you are on facebook, it really only takes a few seconds to vote. If they are in the top 100 in early December (can't remember the exact date) they can get a free $25,000. Also, look for Phantom Regiment in the search bar. They need votes too! If you know of any other corps on there, post them here so we can vote for them!

Like it a lot. Classy and brings in the fundamental ideas of The Cadets. Very cool

Randy Nelson with Colts

Does anyone know the full story with the trial and verdict? I think we need that information before we jump to conclusions about the guy... -
Sort of a spinoff of the Which corps would you march thread. If you could have marched any other instrument what would it be? And for what corps? Give us your original instrument as well! For me, I played trumpet but always wished I could have played snare to march in the Cadets line. Their book is always pretty legit, and I wish I could play it!

Age-outs, who WOULD you audition for
Drumcorpsfan471 replied to Bob J's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Edited because I am an idiot haha. If I could march anywhere now, it would probably be Dev's, because a) they march like MONSTERS and b) their brass sound is pretty great. -
I played 3rd trumpet, lower lead, and upper lead over my years. I could comfortably play a C when I was a 3rd, but never came close to playing that high. When I was a lower lead, I could play up to an E, and when I was upper I played up to a G. It doesn't matter how high you can play, what matters is what kind of tone you produce in that range.

Colts announce a new brass caption head
Drumcorpsfan471 replied to mellowbugle's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
There should be nothing wrong with coming back to see watch your friends practice. I remember people coming by in other corps jackets when I was at Spirit and it never bothered me. If they were my friend at Spirit, they were still my friend if they went somewhere else to march. And if they wore their corps jacket when they came to watch, no biggie. I was just happy to see my friend again. -
I always thought MOST corps do Dot, then make adjustments to form. Dot takes priority, but if everything is a half step off, get in the shape. The only group that I thought was strictly Dot is the Cavaliers.

Cadets ( Hopkins )
Drumcorpsfan471 replied to GUARDLING's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I just hope that they continue to do what they do. A name is just that, a name. I marched one name, but consider myself a Holy Name, Garfield, and of Bergen County Cadet. So if they do or do not keep the name, I am just happy they are still able to field a great group of Cadets year in and year out. -

I know we did record it minus the voice. You can probably check one of those video websites for a vid of rehearsal without voice.... -
Are the World Championships real?
Drumcorpsfan471 replied to Ed from Kansas's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
True. I guess my only other guess is because we have corps from Canada and occasionally other countries compete. Thus officially it is no longer a "national" title... -
Are the World Championships real?

Maybe it's World Champion because the members aren't necessarily from the States? Just an idea. -

One of my favorites is Crown '08. Loved that opening. -
SO I know there have been many topics on here about jazz run technique and what not. What I wanted to ask about was what people thought of corps that jazz run a 6 to 5 step size. I have noticed (or maybe it is me just paying more attention) that more and more corps seem to be ditching the idea that a 6 to 5 is a marchable step size and instead jazz running it. I am curious what you guys think. Should corps only jazz run 4 to 5? Does it really matter? Do you notice it? How bout it....

King Trumpet Question?
Drumcorpsfan471 replied to BlueByYou2000's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Any trumpet is ok for beginners. A lot of people have different opinions on how good different brands of trumpets are so really it is going to be what your kid learns to like. I know Bach Strads are really popular, but I never really liked them. Always preferred a Yamaha Xeno over them...but like I said, any horn is a good horn to start off on. (Atleast for me! )
