  1. Just thought I'd post this. Texas Color Guard Circuit, East Championships Hopson Field House, Missouri City TX March 19, 2016 "My Affliction" Music: Car Radio by Twenty One Pilots 3rd place, White Round (13 guards) 5th place over all (39 guards) So proud of these kids. They took on a very mature subject and just ran with it. It was written specifically with members of our guard in mind who all suffered from or still are suffering from some form of mental disorder. That includes the guard captain who happens to be my daughter, (anxiety and self harm). She goes into every performance knowing she has a 99% chance of having a major attack and seizures after the performance is over, yet she is always rock solid! We also have a couple kids with autism in the guard and it was amazing to watch their growth over the season. Including the young man on the rifle who, up until December, had never touched one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HINJuJvkHJo (Before anyone questions video copyright procedure, we have the permission from Twenty Pilots, their management, and label to post the video)
  2. Well, at least the DCIFN is still up. The WGIFN has been pulled off the air period... WGI Fan Network subscriberWe are writing to all past subscribers to inform you of the status of the WGI Fan Network service for the 2015 season. As valued customers, we feel it important to share with you a progress report on the challenges WGI is facing in the ever-changing world of “new media”. Due to copyright considerations that we are diligently attempting to find affordable solutions for, the WGI Fan Network was suspended onDecember 1. Unfortunately, it now appears that we will be unable to provide online streaming performances on the Fan Network until further notice. We are investigating the possibility of a limited webcast from the WGI World Championships in April. Please know that we are committing considerable resources towards investigating the copyright challenges everyone is facing in this evolving world. Our suspension of the Fan Network is proactive one on the part of WGI. We remain committed to providing our customers as many online performances as possible while adhering to all copyright requirements as prescribed by law. Thank you again for your continued support of the WGI Fan Network. The WGI Fan Network Team
  3. 1984 Suncoast Sound- Requiem followed by the release of the white balloon. Still gets to me 30 years later.
  4. It's been a while since I've posted in DCPland so thought I'd chime in. For those of you who know me, you know I can't stand the use of electronics. Especially mic'd vox. For those who don't know me, well now you know. I'll put it simply... I LOVE this show! My dark-horse of the year.
  5. Here is the video of our show, "Warrior" George Ranch High School Winter Guard 2014 TCGC Eastern State Championship Silver Medalists The 4 year old guard consists of: 1 Senior (on rifle and the only male) 4 Sophomores (2 on rifle) 7 Freshmen (2 on rifle. One is my daughter, front left in the circle at the beginning) 2 8th graders (both on rifle) Hope you enjoy it! This was my daughter's solo performance at The Lone Star Toss-Up on April 26. She was the overall intermediate champion. In fact, The Ranch took all three divisions, Advanced, Intermediate, and Beginner. There was a 3 minute time limit so that's why the song is edited the way it is... Sarah Young - "Somebody To Love" by Queen (Sorry the recording isn't the best. I recorded it from my tablet)
  6. When we design the shows for our guard, I purposely steer my wife towards unusual or older music simply because I don't want to copy or be copied by another group. I can't tell you how many times I heard "The Cave" the last three seasons! This year our show was called "Warrior". We started off with a haka that went directly into a song by Vanessa-Mae called "Emerald Tiger". The crowd seemed to eat it up.
  7. Our guard, George Ranch HS, Richmond, TX (Scholastic Reg. A) just finished it's season last weekend. Sadly we can't go to WGI. Our district only allows one out of state trip per year so it's saved for the band and color guard. In just our 4th year, the kids had a fantastic season. Three shows with three first place trophies and then a silver medal at the TCGC East Championships. There were 24 SRA guards divided into two rounds of 12. We were the #1 seed going in but, without going into it, "something" happened and we brought home the silver which we are still very excited about! This was done with one Senior, four Sophomores, seven Freshman, and two 8th graders. Seven members of the guard touched equipment for the first time during the prior marching season and had never done winter guard. Needless to say, we're very excited about the future of the guard at The Ranch. As soon as the video is available, I'll post the link. I'd post a show from earlier in the season but changes have been made since then.
  8. I can't remember who they were off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure there were a couple corps that used them last year.
  9. A lot of you seem to be forgetting, ww's already are allowed. Granted it's pre-show only, but passing this proposal puts them one step closer to the main show. Anyone laughing now and saying "Just get over it. It won't happen" (you know, like you did when you said a&e, and mic'd voice will never pass?) are having their day, but I give it another 5 years or so. Then those of us who said "told you so" will welcome you in with open arms. And once the ww's hit the field, I'm hitting the exit stands.
  10. The final vote was 17-3 in favor. Cavies, Pioneer, and Racine voted "no" in the instructors caucus Cavies, Pioneer, and Colts abstained in the director's vote
  11. Will you still be saying that when the "all instrument" proposal eventually gets passed? Because of this rule passing, that issue now comes to the forefront. My guess, because of this passing, woodwinds will be on the field within 3-5 years.
  12. Pandora's Box revisited! This just opened up the door wide open for woodwinds.

  14. Going old school... Suncoast Sound: 1984, Requiem 1985, A Simple Song At Sunrise (from A Florida Suite) Garfield: 1983, Simple Song (from Bernstein's Mass) SCV: 1984-85, The Tender Land Freelancers: 1984, With You I'm Born Again
  15. I've actually had faculty from our HS and feeder schools (the Jr. high and elementary schools that feed into our HS) complain that we don't play enough because some of the schools out of our division we've played don't follow this policy. I had a ridiculously hard time trying to make them understand that we have been told by the coaching staff not to play when we have the ball. The problem this season has been that our team is 5-0 and have scored 35+ points in every game with the closest win by 18 points. Their points for/points against ratio is 210-70. That doesn't leave a lot of playing time. However, the fight song is coming along nicely. Being a CA transplant, the first time I heard an entire stadium go silent during an injury came as a complete shock to me. Love the respect that it shows, though.
  16. eesssh! Thanks for the visual reminder! If I recall correctly, she was one of the Bridgemen table top dancers from '82. Letting Gary Meegan go was a huge loss as well. He was one of the reasons I joined up in '83. Was also not too happy when I heard we went to a cadet uni. Especially when people did start calling us "Garfield West". It was amazing how well we were doing before adding Bobby and losing Meegan. I'm still trying to figure out how pink boas and life-size dancing dolls fit in with American Overture and Alexander Nevsky.
  17. Having known JW since my VF days, SoA couldn't have found a better guy for the job. Best of luck, Spirit. Do me one favor, JW... bring back the delta/baby blues!
  18. Vanguard- YPG, Pictures At An Exhibition, Giannini's Third Symphony (4th mvt.), Grover's Corners, The Red Pony, Tender Land BD- Just some old school jazz... PLEASE! Phantom- Symphonie Fantastique Crown- Although not from FL, I'd love to see/hear them take on "A Florida Suite". Cavies- Variations on a Korean Folk Song SoA- Georgia, Let It Be Me, Blues In The Night, Los Hermanos De Bop, Porgy and Bess Troopers- keep going the way you did this past season but add a touch of "Shenandoah" in there somewhere. Cadets- Bernstein's Mass, Candide Madison- Strawberry Soup, Through The Eyes of Love (with DM led company front) Hmmm... who should cover the Freelancers? You Are The Sunshine of My Life, Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, Power Suite/What Is Hip, With You I'm Born Again
  19. You must be right because the crowd's reaction backs up your statement 100%! </sarcasm>
  20. Wow! Bitter much? John brought up DCA because he was responding to someone else's post about starting a weekend only circuit. John mentioned that a circuit already existed, and if you would have bothered to read Mike's post through those seething red eyes, you would have seen that a lot of "kids" get their start in DCA. Some move on to the Jr. circuit, some decide they like it and stay with DCA. Nothing to get disjointed about. I also see you conveniently skipped over the part of John's sig that mentioned he also marched in 2 of the best Jr. corps out there. That's Ok. Hopefully your anger will subside a bit and we can continue on.
  21. <brief thread hijacking> I'll chalk this up to being a newcomer to DCP and not knowing the members yet. While not always seeing eye to eye, John is one of the more respectful and intelligent posters in this forum. And since you're new, I'll drag out the beaten horse and say that you can't compare DCI and DCA. One is on the field non-stop during the competitive season. The other rehearses on the weekends during the season. Allowing those who can't commit the time or money to do a full blown tour a chance to march. You give a DCA corps the same amount of rehearsal time and there'd be no question they'd be in the finals mix. As John said, go check out a DCA show before you rush to judgement. Maybe even take in finals coming up in a few weeks.
