  1. I think he just wanted to see if anyone here has done the same thing before. He didn't ask anyone for help, but clarification.

    In it

What luvs me some mellos doesn't realize is that sometimes the friend actually helps. :P

    for the

Asking questions on a public forum such as DCP is a good first step in trying to solve this problem.

The OP wanted to gather information first before bothering DCI.

    Why so negative? doh.gif

Isn't it better to try and be kind to your fellow human being than being the way you were here?

  2. I got to be honest. While there are some well run OC corps out there, too many of them (especially the ones always on the verge of collapse or the ones that do collapse and come back only to collapse again) are NOT quality institutions and the "experience" any kid would get there will likely be a waste of time and money. Even worse it very well might turn that kid off to marching all together. We've all heard the stories that are far too common but no one really talks about.

    so...

Want to march DC but can't afford a WC corps? Need to work on your chops and test the waters before marching a WC corps? By all means, OC is perfect and you should put just as much time and thought into choosing a quality group to march with.

Mandating people march OC would guarantee a bad experience for far too many students.

  3. Some day, when it would be economically viable to do so, I'd like a start a group of ensembles that uses three-valved G horns. Since these instruments are virtually no longer produced and will soon be unobtainable, do we run the risk of never being able to produce these instruments again at a time when it is appropriate?

Put them in a museum where they belong alongside other instruments that we look back on and chuckle, and from time to time, play just for the novelty value. You could set up a whole exhibit that includes:

    G Bugles

    Key'd bugles

    Metal Clarinets

    Brass Vamp Horn

    Valved Trombone

    Natural Horn

    Marching Tenor Horns

    The Glass Armonica

To name a few. I'd pay to see that exhibit. Sounds fun. Especially if it were interactive.

  4. What would the training regimen be for becoming a metronome technician? Are there any master metronome technicians for hopefuls to look up to or seek advice from?

You have to run up steep hills carrying 2 weighted long rangers.

Instead of disassembling a rifle you have to disassemble and store away a met/long ranger set-up.

Maybe they have a standard for how fast your battery change time should be?

  5. I'm trying to remember a great movie or book that didn't have a good vs. evil type of theme and am coming up short.

Perhaps the OP is after more of a straight-laced British drama type of show.

"A Room With a View With a Staircase and a Pond," perhaps.

+1 to anyone who can source the quoted reference. :)

Archetypes aren't just limited to good vs evil.

Forget a room with a view of a pond. This is America. Give me a room with a view OF HELL

  6. Kind of funny, but just as the world needs ditch-diggers, the drum corps world needs "metronome technicians." Why pay for a rookie staffer to do it, or an alternate member, when you can find a willing kid who'll do it? There's no glory in the position, but it's a way for someone to be exposed to a quality drum corps that might not otherwise get that chance this summer, I guess.

It's not "ditch digger," It's "Trenching Specialist."

  7. Ok....I am getting tired of ranting out here(Believe it or not) but I just can't contain myself when it comes to reading another show description of dark vs. light. Really ? I mean how many times have dci corps drank from this well ? Did a rule pass a couple of seasons ago I missed requiring all dci corps to play a good vs. evil, light vs. dark show ?

Is this the best the creative staffs of dci can come up with ? man.....

Am i the only one ? Does anyone else out here feel the same ?

They're called Archetypes. They're found in every book, play, opera, TV show, Movie and even drum corps show. They aren't going anywhere and they don't really change, just how they're presented.

    Move on.

  8. People amuse me!

Yes, the back field drum major usually would be the person to run the met. That really doesn't work with how Crown runs their rehearsals. There are usually three fields of rehearsal going on simultaneously. If a back field drum major could run back and forth between three different rehearsals, he/she's amazing! But with that said, an extra body to cover the met at one of those rehearsals is essential! Perhaps it sounds insane for someone to even want to do this, but while I was marching, the individual who held this position was given much respect.

    Psssst....

The joke is in the wording of the position, not exactly the position itself. ;)

  9. I dont know why people continue to use this video.

Carolina Crown is loud. Possible having the biggest sound (granted they use the same easy chords..) Their brass is terrific. Their brass is my favorite thing about the corps.

This video was shot with a terrible camera. You hear static, not the hornline.

    Perhaps this one, then:

  10. It's better than making an alternate, who paid the full tour fees, do it IMO. Still kind of funny tho.

I don't think the person gets 'mad props' for doing it tho. I don't remember ever hearing, man... we couldn't do it with our met b***h lol (and I've heard the met guy/girl being called the met b***h from most corps, unfortunately)

I think there are plenty of people who would love this opportunity, and enjoy doing it, however.

Which is why, if you know this, then it makes the announcement hilarious.

    Garbage man = Sanitation Expert

    Nurse = Medical Technician

water boy = Hydration Expert or Training Assistant

    Met B***h = Metronome Technician

  11. Care to explain this one a bit more? Not really trying to pick a fight, I just think you have an interesting opinion here, that could make some more sense if you explained it out. What about their shows either doesn't do it for you, or makes them seem over-hyped? Is it just cause of their history, 38 years in Finals, 6 championships, that just makes people love them and hype them as when they'll make the jump back up? I don't know, I'd just like your read on it.

They're usually hyped from outside of the top 3 each year as the "Corps that's going to win our next championship. This is the year!" But they always end up about where they were last year + or - a rank or two. Sounds like the definition of hype to me. The show can still be very enjoyable, and I have enjoyed SCV shows this decade more years then not, but still be over-hyped.

Also add in the fact that BD is the bigger powerhouse and just down the road and it seems the reason fans over-hype that year's product is so they can pump themselves and their fan-base to try and put themselves over "Big Brother BD" again.

Kind of hard to quantify but I totally get what he is saying. Both are California powerhouses but SCV just always seems to be sucking hind titty to BD. Can I say that here??

    Yep.

Well, apparently you can. I just wonder when the change happened. Cause I know back in the day, SCV was the top, and BD was chasing them, but when did it switch? And I think another part of the problem is SCV itself. Someone else mentioned it about Phantom, but i think that PR and SCV are pretty much the Chicago Cubs of drum corps. i think that when we see them at the top, it's amazing, but there are so many people out there that love them, they try and turn every year into "that" year. And when it doesn't happen, "there's always next year. next year's show will be the one. This corps will take them to a ring," and that's a ton of pressure for the corps to operate under. Just my read on it.

I agree. But regardless of motivation, it's still hype that goes unfulfilled. I guess I see hype and a following for a product that didn't do as well as advertised the same as an "over rated" product.

  12. Crown - Metronome Technician - "Crown is looking for a college aged student that can come to spring training and go on tour with us for the whole summer as our metronome technician. Cost? $0.00 But you really need to know how to run a DB-90 or be an aweful quick learner. Tough job, but you tour and hang with Crown all summer."

  13. From Carolina Crown's Facebook:
