  1. I have to say that this clip does nothing for me. I can only hope that the clip is not doing it for me because it is not a highlight og the show (save the good stuff) or possibly since it is still just May or the recording is just not doing it justice. I'll obviously have to wait and see it live, but based on that clip, I don't think this will live up to last year's triumph.

  2. While on the whole I loved the Cadets in 1996 and really feel like they had the goods to win that caption (and the overall title) that year, on Finals night, there seemed to be a massive tear in Red Pony that I just remember being absolutely shocked to have heard. So on Finals night, I think that tear alone should have been enough for them to lose that caption to either Phantom or BD. But that's just what I recall hearing on Finals night, it's not as bad on the recording.

  3. The Union Square theater in NYC was a smaller theater than last year (probably because they added an additional venue on 42nd Street), but the crowd was pretty good.

I was so happy to see Crossmen! I love that show.

The Mello soloist from the Cadets is probably my favorite ever. The crowd had several former Cadets in the audience and it was kind of cool to see people recognize themselves from 22 years ago. Wow that must be a wierd sensation . . .

Bridgmen, Star, Cadets and Phantom were best received. The Bridgemen are just surreal, I mean the dancing bird is classic.

My favorites were Crossmen, Cadets, and Vanguard.

My friend (who is pretty new to the activity) felt that Star and Bridgemen were the two tops for the night -- guess it just goes to show that the activity can be successful in reaching the audience in a WIDE variety of styles.

  4. Well, for what it's worth, I think that Boston had their best show during Quarters and Crown had their worst. Crown got much better and imho Boston slipped a little, so I completely agree with that one. Now, for the Bluecoats, I do think they improved during the week (they were pretty dirty at Quarters). Now, was it worth over 2 points? I think it really depends on where everyone else places. I don't think the actual number matters that much.

  5. I would just mention one that's not been mentioned thus far (I believe), the Cadets 1990 uniforms. I really thought that they really helped bust the mold when it came to "uniform" uniforms. I've always thought that they worked great with the corps proper (in color) and brought a bit of sophistication to the field that hadn't been there before.

  6. I too really like the Blue Knights. They're very different from other corps visually (both individuals and the way the drill is conceived and realized). I agree that it can take multiple viewings of BK to really appreciate the nuance of a lot of what they do, but I think that makes what they do all the more special.

Quite frankly, I think they have had some identity issues, but what corps hasn't struggled with their identity especially in an era where all corps seem to be categorized based on the general styles of the big boys. For example, while the Blue Knights were called the Cadets of the West, I never really saw them that way. In my mind, they had a unique perspective on the music of Copland and Bernstein and brought a completely different aesthetic to what they did with the tunes that were Classic Cadets. Unfortunately, we as the viewing public felt compelled to categorize them based on our associations of what they were doing with the Cadets. Then there was a period of time when BK started playing pure symphonic music and they essentially were out "Phantoming" Phantom, but once again, they were neatly in a category we as viewers could use. But recently, they haven't really fit into any of our preconceived molds and that is why we maybe perceive them as having an identity crisis. I think the crisis maybe lies in the viewer who maybe has difficulty with dealing with a corps that does things outside of the preconceived categories that exist today: the general categories are probably Cadets, BD, Phantom, SCV, Cavaliers. There are so many ways of doing this activity and I think that BK maybe doesn't get a fair shake precisely because they don't always fit inside these categories.

  7. I thought the video only showed people getting fitted for a uniform. My guess is that the uniforms in the video are simple the existing uniforms that were being tried on for sizing purposes only. Since the new uniforms are coming from the same manufacturer (I believe), they could do that without being too far off. So I don't think the video really helps answer the question.

  8. I think that this uni wil do wonders o clean up their visual appearance. While I liked the unique quality of the old unis, they really did make the members look not a crisp as the other corps' unis. I think this uni will give them the modern lines they need in order to present a clean looking visual package, but with their own unique twist. Very nice in my opinion.

  9. Well, actually, speaking of file sharing . . . I am amazed that the DCI videos are available on Google Video. That is just blatant copyright infringement.

But also, with the "original" music concept. You really have to be careful there too, you might get a little to close to one paricular work and your "original" music might turn into an infringing derivative work. It's a very precarious situation, I'm sure.

Also, as far as rearranging goes, I'd be interested to know if that's something in the individual licenses that these particular composers has or is it a general clause in the license for any work?

  10. You absolutely should include Madison's 1992 "City of Angels" show. That was a great show and actually stayed relatively true to the source material (although it is not as true as the 1991 version, 1992 was just a beeter total show).

In addition: 1984 Garfield; 1988 Skyryders; 1989 Cadets; 1989 SCV; 1991 SCV; 1994 Cadets; 1995 Colts (Sunday in the Park With George); 1999 MAdison; 2005 Spirit (a litle choppped up, but on the whole a nice B-Way show).

  11. I have to say that I think parity is ultimately beneficial to the activity because it spreads the wealth and makes more corps viable in an activity which, ultimately, is still about competition.

I am encouraged that the "haves" are ultimately going to be caught by the "have nots". First, the gap between 1-12 has been narrowing in my opinion, not increasing. Second, with the number of top staff members spreading out through the activity, the overall level of training is getting much better. Third, and probably most important, it seems to me that we have more kids choosing to age-out with corps such as Crown, Bluecoats, Scouts and such. Once the talent begins to stick with all of the corps through age-out, then I believe we will see some change at the top.

I think we're getting much closer to parity now than we were, say, in the late '90s. And I think the proof of that is the overall quality of the Quarterfinalists' performances. We actually had real quality shows and performances this year all the way through the lineup. I think that as the lower level corps continue to improve, the gap will continue to narrow.

And as for less emphasis on the score for the overall show design, I think that would actually keep the top at the top. Let's face it, a corps like BlueDevils or Cadets will typically have very strong performers. But all it would take is a bad design or a fantastic design from another corps for those inherent performance differences to be overcome. It must always be a balance of performance and product.

Perhaps if kids watching the Finals broadcast got to actually see some of the corps from the bottom and middle of the pack, they might really latch onto them. . . If the main recruiting/propoganda tool for DCI is the broadcast, and they show nothing but the top 3, why on Earth should your average kid be expected to even realize that there is anything else out there? Heck, I didn't even realize that there was a corps called the Crossmen until I happened to see them on the 1990 highlights, and after seeing more they became one of my favorites. . . Oh well, that's a different topic altogether.

  12. Well, I will go ahead and post on this topic since for me, the Guardsmen were one of the biggest discoveries I made while working my way through the Legacy Collection. They predate my histroy with DCi (1987), so I never saw them live. But I thoroughly enjoyed them each year they appear in the Legacy DVDs. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed them so much that they garnered one of my votes for the Classic Countdown. I think that they absolutley should be remembered and if you get a chance, try to check them out on the Legacy DVDs. The quality of the hornline was just first rate!

  13. I think SCv in green pants with the red jacket is fine. They have always played around with their uniforms: Didn't they go with white jackets and green pants in 1993 and in 1996? I mean, SCV changed pants during shows, I don't think changing them during the off season is too shocking.

As for going to darker pants, why shouldn't corps do it to gain a competitive advantage? I mean, the Cavies have been lauded on here as the best marchers out there, but how much of the individual marching issues are masked by the black pants/black shoes/no stripe and the crazy fast tempos that make it difficult to really see? Now when the Cavies come back with the broad white stripes down their legs, then we'll really see what's going on.

I wonder, if the Cadets do invert their uniform, will they keep the stripe down their leg? And will they keep the white shoe? Now that would be gutsy.

  14. One aspect of the show that I really love is the fact that they essentially used the traditional begin the show on the left and exit the field on the right. It's cool to see how the traditional can be modified and incorporated into something completely innovative. I think 1989 Vanguard does the same sort of thing. I love seeing that, especially since I only became aware of this element of corps shows when I bought the Legacy Collection.
