  1. First, Let me say that Box 5 Productions is very excited to be offering our services to the fans and performers of DCA. I have been following these threads very closely for feedback and information that could help us determine the types of products and packages available, as well as feature offerings on the products themselves. We want to make it clear that Box 5 Productions is committed to excellence in all facets of this project. We view DCA as a partner in our business allowing us to showcase our productions to the world with the excellent performances that take place during the championship weekend. Great care will be taken to insure that all products meet or exceed our stringent requirements for public consumption. I saw a couple of questions in this thread I thought I would address to help you get a sense of the type of company we are. Looking at their website though, they admit that sometimes a DVD/CD can occasionally be bad and it appears that return shipping is at your expense even if it is a faulty disc. We do maintain a policy of asking you send the DVD back to us. This is for several reasons, however, the number 1 reason is so we can check the actual disc you are having an issue with. We are always researching and exploring better ways of producing our product and these discs help us to do that research. I can tell you that in the last 4689 DVD's that have left our office we have a 100% playback rate. Meaning that not one person returned a disc due to playback issues. We currently have a 99% accuracy rate on those 4689 discs. Meaning that 4642 of those discs went to the right home. Of the remaining 47 discs 65% were shipped incorrectly due to customer error (incorrectly filled out order forms, wrong year selection, etc). I wanted to get that out there, due to some questions and concerns in this and previous threads. Now if the DVD's come with camera selection (ie multi cam, high cam only, etc) like DCi DVD's, I could be persuaded to buy them again. I promise I am not picking on this person, he just happens to ask the questions that I am excited about answering. You will be excited to learn that we will be offering several products with multiple (selectable) camera options. I can't reveal too much right now because we are still shooting holes in our product offerings. What I can tell you is that the product offerings for DCA will be more streamlined, easier to order and less confusing. We are working on a product that will include high-cam, multi-cam, percussion & guard cam. EVERY product we offer comes with the high-cam option so you can rest easy knowing that this is guaranteed. I can also tell you that we are making the Mini-Corps segment of the weekend a huge priority. We will be offering a complete multi-cam / 5.1 digital product for this event. We feel very strongly that this event needs to be a showcase type of product and will treat it as such. During finals we will include a 25 foot crane / jib camera in our production. We are very excited to offer this to DCA and believe it adds to the production value of the product so immensely that it can't be put into words. We are very excited to be working with DCA as well as the fans and performers. We will be announcing tons of media offerings over the next few months so stay tuned. Be ready to order early and get your friends to order as this will truly be a memorable production. Tim Snyder Box 5 Productions

  3. To give some of you some explanations and let one of you know the reason behind it. #1 - The video was shot and edited in HD delivered in flash - looks 10X better on a large monitor with HD. These images are highly compressed. The downloadable file is an SD file, still highly compressed. The 3D that will be on the corps tour video's will be AppleTV format HD video files 1280X720 as long as the downconversion to 24 frames per second works like it should. If that doesn't happen they will be formatted in the quasi HD resolution of 960X540 for AppleTV. #2 - This video was shot in parallel, which means that the cameras are parallel to each other. Which also means that the videos you have are not always perfectly converged. We wanted to get this video out there very quickly so we opted for a quick converge to the middle of the field for all shots. We are in the process of converging each and every frame of the performances to maximize the depth and scale of the video. For example in the video we do a slow pan across the Vanguard and one member is very close to the camera, the convergence is set to the middle of the field so even with glasses he has a ghost next to him. We are working on fixing those things right now. #3 - I think someone has mentioned it earlier, your glass color will affect your ability to see the image as we are. Which is why the tour videos will come with color matched 3D glasses to maximize the experience. #4 - for GofanGo - Box 5 has been shooting with HD since 2005 and using tripods longer than that. As far as the Tom Blair comment, nobody replaces Tom Blair or even wants to. I have the utmost respect and admiration for Tom and take every opportunity to learn from him and love our conversations about video (I like the other ones too) as he is a wealth of knowledge and to be honest a real cool guy. Why did we do it? Because we thought it would be a cool thing. When you watch it in 3D-HD it literally feels like you are standing where I was during the shooting. Its nothing more than wanting to see if we could do it and make a little snippet on our tour videos. It will be like all the other extras on the DVD's. As far as those people that say anaglyph (red/blue or red/green) is dead and polarization is the only way. Keep in mind there isn't a way to get polarized images in the home unless you own a 3D projector or TV which is VERY few people. Coraline, the latest 3D movie to be released on BluRay is red/green. Everything released on disc is anaglyph as it is the only way to deliver 3D to the home right now, which is why we chose this route instead of polarization. I hope that helps. Tim
  4. Granny, I would love to do those types of things, however, I don't do this enough for DCI to warrant investment in other gear for this venture even if it is cheap. I am only doing (3) shows this year and only did one last year. Its hard enough to maintain the (5) cameras we have on the road without the additional thought process of other cameras. And to be quite honest I think we may not do this type of business in the future. tim
  5. Look, I am not putting anything on anything. If you want to know the bit rate at which my files are uploaded: I can tell you that. Audio is encoded today at: AAC Stereo Interleaved 44.100 KHz 96kbps In order to upload a full resolution audio along with the video, the resulting file was 850mb, way too large for upload. So we have to downgrade in places to make this happen. Once it gets to brightcove I don't know how it is delivered to you. tim
  6. No, I forgot the trailing Hz on the sampling rates I am not confusing anything. I have not encoded or uploaded any Cavaliers shows. The only shows I uploaded were Beverly, MA and Columbia, SC and will be doing Salem, VA. I am very competent at my job. Brightcove changes the files. Today I am uploading 44.1KHz audio to try and save space on the upload.
  7. 48KHz is what I uploaded. Brightcove reencodes the video and audio to fit their needs. As far as last year, I don't know how they did it. I only did one show last year and we uploaded in exactly the same fashion. Tim
  8. I personally think that you are being unrealistic. I didn't put the trailing Hz, I apologize about that, but I uploaded audio to Brightcove in 48KHz which is better than CD quality. Tim
  9. I have watched this thread with great interest. I will offer some help to you as I have intimate knowledge of the situation involved in this as we are a provider of some of these VOD videos as well as corps content. I can tell you the following: #1) DCI IS NOT throttling bandwidth at any point. They are committed to quality. #2) DCI HAS NOT specifically decided to not record certain corps and not post them to the VOD section. #3) The quality of the video and audio I can assure you is of great quality. I uploaded Beverly personally in (SD) quality in widescreen. The audio bitrate was 48khz which is better than CD quality at 44.1khz. The video was down-converted to 2500Kbps bit rate instead of the standard 25Mb bit rate. These files I am dealing with are better than 6GB a piece. They must be converted to something that can actually be uploaded through the network. It would take days to upload (1) video at full resolution. #4) IT IS NOT THE CAMERAS BEING USED. I have (5) people on the road at all times, all with matching HD Cameras. We are capturing great quality video and audio. I know for a fact that the DCI crews are using Canon XL1 cameras which are very good SD cameras. #5) In terms of upload times I can not speak for everyone only myself. In the case of the Beverly, MA show I had to fly the tapes back to Louisville and encode them for upload. They were up and ready for viewing by 5pm the following day. I am currently uploading Columbia to brightcove. These things take time. Some people have the gear to encode on-site, I do not, I have to get tapes and bring them in and re-encode them for upload. It does take time. Columbia ended last night at 10 or so. I met the corps in Orlando at 6am to start the encoding process. As we only have laptops on the road encoding takes a little longer. So based on what I am seeing right now Columbia will be ready by this evening - less than 24 hours after the show. #6) Everyone has a right to have their opinion on how this situation should work. However, those people that say they can do it faster are not on the road day in and day out working very hard for DCI and these drum corps. Internet connection is very hard to come by out on the road, specifically fast upload speeds. I can honestly tell you that anyone with better ideas to please let us know what they are because, I want it to be faster, I want it to be better, I want you to be happy. #7) I have watched all the streaming videos on brightcove and I am able to get video bitrates at a much higher quality than some are reporting here. You should also realize that brightcove decides which version of the video that receive. There are 4 different versions of the Holy Name performance in Beverly 468k up to 1500k in video quality. I don't know how you are getting your video but I am able to see all 4 versions. As far as the website uptime and other issues. I can't speak towards that as all I know is the video. I hope that helps some of your concerns. Tim Snyder Box 5 Productions
  10. Buy them at Fathom events through the DCI website. They were $10 a piece.
  11. Talking to some friends at crown, this was actually the MARCH camp, NOT april. Since the april camp is this weekend, maybe we can see some new stuff after this camp that will be even better. Keep up the good work Crown!!!!! Me likey.
  12. I was just out at Crown's website and they have some audio up. You NEED to check it out. It sounds like they are going to be incredible. :) Carolina Crown Website Its the first article on the page.
  13. I talked to a couple of staff members to get my information in and see what I could do to get ready, (BTW / they seem like a great bunch of people) and I asked them if anyone had marched 16 before. They said they knew 92 Star had marched 16 and didn't really know about anyone else. I then asked them about the horns, and they said they were 2 valve contras, in G. I also think they said they were King's or at least they were related to king horns. And for the kicker, they didn't get any new horns. They marched on the same horns since the beginning. Just thought you should know - I can't wait to get over there.
  14. A friend of mine thats marching Crown told me that they are marching 16 tubas this year. I'm going to the next camp and try to get one of those spots. Hopefully, I can make it. Has anybody ever marched 16 tubas, I have only counted 12 the past few years with some corps having 10? I can't wait!!!
  15. I need a person to come on tour with a top 12 drum corps and do podcasts. All gear is provided, and all expenses are paid for. Plus a salary. Please email me with your resume. You must know Final Cut Pro and be familiar with Sony HDV cameras. Thanks Robin
