Empire Statesmen, Matadors, Minnesota Brass... the three I miss the most.

My definition of "entertaining" has always been "I would pay to see that show again." Those three corps fit that definition, for me.

If that's your criteria would you pay to See Matadors 77 again?  i know I sure as hell would!

  2. Just my opinion, but is the marching band programs in Texas, is their primary goal to compete, or to provide entertainment at half time.  No high school in Texas is providing a 25 million budget for their music programs like many of the stadiums that are being built so that a bunch of 18 year olds pituiraries (sic) can entertain Daddy.  If I was 18 again, and I'm not, I'm 66, I would refuse to do half time shows just on principal.  I think I'm going to take some flak but it is my opinion.  Hehehehe so flame away.

That was the first show I ever saw! My parents, sister and I went and had to sit on the back side as concert side was sold out.

Yep booing and blizzard of thrown programs is what I remember. And sitting on the other side got a real good look 😳

And i forgot to mention that was Red's hornline.  I'll never forget Richie playing the solo in Requiem one of Red's greatest orchestration

Reading was playing “Requiem” my first year and heard comments from “years ahead of everyone else” to the dreaded “that ain’t Drum Corps”. Time to put in the 1974 Carlisle DVD to watch it again.

One of the greatest shows and hornline in DCA history with a killer drum line taught by Flowers IIRC.  What I remember about 74 was the corp beating Cabs in Hershey and being booed off the field.

I haven't seen anyone state yet:  Is there a suspicion that all of this is related to the Fred Morrison issue?

If it's all speculation at this point, I don't really care about it.

This appears to be another venerable org going down; I hope someone has actual first-hand facts.

Forgive my ignorance but what is the "Fred Morrison issue"?

They were in close (13th....six tenths out) in 1975....unfortunately, I was not at that championship.  Also, in 1977, we had several shows together,

and they were respectable, and nearly beat us (Crossmen) a few times, and did beat Garfield during the season........

I was there in 75 for prelims and finals and they were very very good.  I thought they had beat Troopers

    Jeff,

I get 20 of what is now the standard "Corona Virus Update" a day in my E-Mail.  DCI said nothing new, or helpful.

Can't you find something constructive to complain about ?

    Regards, STLDRMN

I know it's been almost a month, I didn't get the sense that Jeff was complaining.  I got the impression that he just trying to find out what's going on.

Argonne's interpretation of the total show concept was different than the vast majority of corps in 1971. Sandra believed that the total show concept was about the merging of of the musical components (drums and bugles) with the visual to achieve an integrated musical presentation. It was NOT that you needed a themed show. In the 5.0 LP, Sandra held the '68 and '69 Kilties up as examples of corps with a similar approach.

In the late 60s, it was generally believed on the Great Plains of Kansas that the road to the top of the brass pile went through Racine, Wisconsin. It was clear that these young men where getting instruction that others were not. They were very, very good.

Oh, that's right....the Kilts played that.

BS was at the start of their rapid decline after staying up there in 1970. Their 71 show was primarily "The King and I", though I think they also did "Stars and Stripes" and formed a big U-S-A on the field as their color pre.

My predominant pre-DCI memory of St Joe's was of them being known for a larger-than-normal drum line that was VERY good.

Mike their drum line wasn't just "very good".  They took high drums at VFW Nationals in 68 and were undefeated!  That was a killer drum line.

  10. Fran's brother-in-law lived across the street from me.  He asked me if I wanted to join a drum corps?  I asked him "what  the hell was a drum corps?"

I got hooked quickly.  Bucky Swan was my 1st horn instructor and like fran and his brother I marched with the Crusaders and then
Sunrisers.   Of course I also marched Reading Buccaneers for 2 years.  Without question my favorite time in Corps.

She was indeed a GREAT DM for Blue Rock.

I know this is off topic but her predecessor was a DM named Betty Ann and I stand corrected Mike,  Vicki was the early 70s.  Vicki had what we in the military called "command intonation".  When she gave a command on the field you heard her clearly and distinctly.

I think all the opinions in this thread matter to some degree, and show us just how complex this issue has become.  On

one side, the alumni (very outspoken in many cases), and then the fans with enthusiasm, and in some cases unconvinced

about the changes in place.  This has become as big as the Madison Scouts legacy itself.  I find that its understandable

how alumni would forever resist this change, and see where current trends in our culture influenced this change as well.

I have personally accepted what has changed knowing that this is here to stay.   My thoughts lately move to the plight of

the Cavaliers.  Will they now find themselves under scrutiny, and a demand for the same changes?  Will the concede?

When you consider the definition itself of  "Cavalier",  it seems obvious to me how they will respond if pressed.

WOW!!! There really is a first time for everything...lol
