  1. It's not Downtown, but you have to go there... Broadripple!
  2. I've been told by Phantom Regiment alumni that the corps prefers to be referred to as "Regiment" rather than "Phantom"... but I see most everyone use "Phantom" here and elsewhere. Not wanting to be politically incorrect or to offend FMM's, which is it?
  3. Very nicely done! You don't have to be a FMM to be a fan. Congrats on your upcoming Masters work and don't be a stranger! Fan or FMM, you're still apart of the family!
  4. This entire thread proves to me once and for all that all of us need to get a life.
  5. I love it when Boo out thinks all of us!!! Who would have thought the words "Yangqin" and "Boo" would be used in the same article! And yes Mike, I'm still writing that article for you (It's only a year late!)
  6. Go stand in front of the Carolina Crown hornline and after they play their first major hit and I'm sure you will have a much different opinion. These kids are by far a few decibels louder than Regiment, and I say that with much respect to the kids from Regiment. And for that matter, BD is probably a touch louder than Regiment as well.
  7. You're kidding, right? It's a drum corps show... don't get too excited there Sparky. If you're a BD fan, this show is the greatest thing since sliced bread... but if you're not, than it's just ok. Personally (and I'm a BD fan), this show is nothing more than "OK". The tunes are groovy, and after about five or six listens, I was into it. And the concept is fun (I dig the occasionally horn player running outside the set, and the tightrope stuff). But these past two years have left me wanting something more from Wayne Downey. I don't hate it, but it's no where near my favorite BD chart.
  8. Not surprising, coming from someone that has a Battle Star Gallactica photo as their avatar. (Just teasing :p ) Here's the thing, with this top 5, anything can happen, and we have two weeks to play out every freaking scenario in the book. It's BD's to lose right now, plain and simple. Can Regiment win... yes. But they have to push themselves to out preform BD. That is going to take some work. Is a Blue Devils victory a given? Based on tonight's recaps, not anymore, but they're still in the drivers seat. If BD gets too cocky, someone needs to remind them that there have been a handful of corps that have gone into Champs undefeated and walked out in 2nd or 3rd place on Saturday night. What I suspected after seeing them at the start of the season might be coming true... they are a #### good corps, with a really good book (but not a great book) and they are endanger of peaking to early. IMHO, the ending of the show is flat and doesn't match the intensity of the first 3/4"s of the show, and at some level, the kids know it and are translating it on the field. Regiments big problem with their visual program is their first impression. The first minute of the show is VERY underwhelming, and is performed as such. The kids have never quite hit or executed the opening sets, even after they made changes a few weeks back. It's very difficult drill to interpret from the box, looks even more difficult to interpret from the field. After the intro, they kick on the afterburners and let'er rip. But that first minute of the show just leaves me with a bad taste and lasts the entire show. Fix that and it's worth a good three tenths, at least. Cavi's just don't have the book this year. I hear that its a young corps, and if that's the case, we're in trouble because those kids are #### good. But's its just not their year... yet. Crown - The reason for the jump in scoring... they've cleaned more than the others in the top 5. This is a different corps than we saw last week in SA, and, they've added a new ending to boot. I love this show, though not as much as last year. Also, I don't think we should be reading into the scoring margins closing up... remember that the higher we get in the numbers, the harder is to climb a tenth or two.
  9. A Saturday night broadcast is not economically feasible because there is more money to be made on gate revenue than on pay-per view. If a pay-per-view was offered, the fear is more people would want to stay home than travel to finals. Ultimately, there just aren't enough people who would buy the pay-per-view broadcast to justify the production costs. Again, it's been studied over, and over, and over again.
  10. No it can't, otherwise they would be offering it. It's been studied, and rejected... for good reason.
  11. To the best of my knowledge, it would be both DCI, and the composer of the music. Would probably depend on how th contract was written up. I'm not an attorney so dont quote me on any of this.
  12. I've been waiting for the videos from tonights show to be posted and have yet to see anything? Am I missing something? Anyone else see them yet?
  13. Those are the cute moments that I think everyone is ok with. But 'm talking about the annoying band geeks that have to yell it for every freaking corps. All I'm asking is if we can get original... I'm not advocating crickets and the sitting on hands thing
  14. Drum Major is Your Corps Ready? "They're Always Ready!" Drunk drum corps fans, ugh! What are you going to do? I was just watching the Blue Devils "C" corps show on Fan Network, and someone actually took the time to yell this. 30-years ago, it was cool and funny, but now it just makes the people that do it sound like morons. My God people, can't we be more creative? It's old, tired, and frankly, sounds stupid. Wondering if we can start kicking people out of the stadiums for doing this? :P (*OK, sarcasm off). But it really is annoying that we can't come up with something more original. Anyone have any ideas? Post'em here...
  15. Which leads me to my next question... how do you judge GE? Isn't it subjective? On any given night, could you and I disagree who might win the battle in the GE department? If it is that subjective, doesn't anyone else see where this might cause problems?
  16. But I would like to know why entertainment value for the fans is not factored into the equation. If I understand what you are saying, there is no consideration given in this department. Which leads to a very interesting question, do we design the show for the judges, or the fans? Also, isn't it odd how quite a few comments on the board this past year year talked about how their favorite shows were placed 3-7 in 2007, and of those, most did not care for Cavi's and BD? Does this mean that in order to win, you have to give up a little of the audience connect (not all, just a little)... becuase I see the same thing happening this year. By the way, I'm waiting for you to take a guess at the corps I don't like. ;) Why does it matter which corps I like/dislike? Actually, its not about the corps, but the shows. I love BD, great organization, one of my all time favorite corps, but I really don't care for their show this year.
  17. IF DCI is not supposed to be a sport (or, I'm assuming you mean 'competitive'), we should do away with competition completely. not only will it end all of the debates, but it will save us waisted money as well.
  18. Really? You're kidding right? Award winning economists are screaming (and have been for quite sometime) that despite the growth (which is minimal), we are in a full blown recession. I don't need a textbook to tell me that my savings account is lighter, that my investments and 401k are hurting, that the dollar is about as worthless as the paper it's printed on, the government is bailing out Freddy and Fanny, banks are failing, and that moving trucks are frequenting my neighborhood because family after family is being foreclosed on. I don't know that we will get to a depression, but for the first time in my life I am truly scared for myself and my family. I don't need a textbook to tell me that we are in a recession, but feel free to wait for that chapter to be printed. While you're waiting, I'll go ahed and call it... We're in a recession!
  19. Like Ryan, I hate to be the one to yell "the sky is falling", but it is. Unless we see a dramatic turn on fuel and food prices (which we won't, even if the bubble bursts), this could (and probably will) be one of our last good years of drum corps. I would say there will be no less than three corps that will go inactive next season, and that's probably a low estimate. If the economy continues to struggle, the activity itself will be forced to go on hiatus in the next five years. The money isn't there, and things are going to get much worse before they can get better. DCI is going to be put into a position where they will need to do what's best for the individual organizations before they break the bank for a costly national tour. If they put the activity on hiatus for a year it might help curb some of the problems. Yes it's drastic, but these are drastic times. Folks, this isn't going to be an ordinary or light recession. It's about to get really bad... to the likes of which we haven't seen in 80 years. We are all about to learn that there are more important things than drum corps.
  20. It's obvious that none of the DCI judges has a clue what GE is. Can we all get on the same page? Can someone from DCI explain it? My impression was that its supposed to be about connecting with the crowd... but the corps that are winning GE aren't connecting with me at all. 20 years in this activity, and I really have had it with the judging system. Can we please just hand the trophy to BD so we can go on with our lives... sheesh. This judging system stinks to high heaven... and no one cares.
  21. Can someone tell me how in the hell Regiment placed 4th in Visual GE and Visual Ensemble? Music GE Scores are where they should be (my opinion)... Dev's win Visual, though I think Cavi's should have had them there. GE Cavi's BD PR SCV Visual BD Cavi's PR SCV Drums PR 17.1 BD 17.1 Cavi's 17.05 SCV 16.6 Horns BD 17.3 Cavi's 17.2 PR 17.0 SCV 16.4 Guard BD 18.1 Cavi's 17.7 PR 17.4 SCV 16.7
  22. Dude, he is real. Anything is possible after that scoring mess...
  23. That my friends is what Bulls*&t smells and tastes like, becuase DCI just rammed it down our throats tonight with these scores! There is no way BD and SCV are five points a part. There is NO FREAKING WAY BK and SCV are only two points apart. And there is no FUDGING WAY Cavi's are a full point back. I'm so sick of this judging system that it makes me sick (lol, yeah I just wrote that...).
  24. "First drum major to step off the line is a roten egg!"
