  1. I am guessing, and this is just a guess, that Brabdt had a few too many things going on. Not only is he taking cues from the DCI timing director and possibly the corps director ( to get the timing thing down), but he also has an ear peice and is listening to Tom Blair in the television production truck. Its quite interesting, but the for the live quaterfinals show, Tom Blair is actually the person giving Brandt the "go" to begin his "On the field, from...". Its a very preplexed and interesting process at Championships. I can imagine that it can get somewhat confusing for the people behind the scenes as well.
  2. I have seen the video and pictures of Regiment playing "Elsa" to the Cavaliers at retreat... but was wondering if anyone involved could share their story of what took place and how it evolved? I am curious becuase I know that DCI has been VERY stern on corps leaving the field in recent years, mainly due to curfews and stadium commitments. The years when I worked the TV crews for Championships, Dan A. and crew were out on the field chasing kids off. Hearing about Regiment playing the Cavaliers off caught me by surprise. Did DCI have anything to say about it?
  3. Bravo Nikk! As always, that was beautiful and well said. Congrats Regiment, you made me a huge Phan this year!
  4. If it happens it happens, and we will all be better off for it. DCI and BOA are run by a group of very intelligent people, all with the interest of kids and music education in mind. If they think this is the right decision to push the acitivity forward, it will be studied, re-studied, discussed, and studided again, all in a way that will make it benefical for everyone involved, including the fans, and most importantly the kids. Not trying to be an apologist, but sometimes you have to trust that the people who have been put in power to make the decisions. If the current management thinks this is the way to go, they will get my vote of support.
  5. Well done, and it was an editorial none the less! Thanks Greg!
  6. I think the point that Stef makes, which is the most important, is that it takes commitment and a smart business plan to get things running. No "check", regardless of how large it is, will get a drum corps off the ground, let alone keep it running. The success of any orginization is based in no small part on the people behind that organization, period.
  7. Take a look at this on you tube... very funny stuff! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ou0Odk_sJ4
  8. Just the way they ended up was fine with me. I think the judges got it right.
  9. Isee the pro's, I see the con's. Having said that, and being a former Indianapolis resident, I do think people that have never been there will be suprised at how nice the city is and how much there is to do. The weekend prior to the Championships will be the Brickyard 400 race, so thoose of us that like racing will be set. As for the west corps, yes, this will be a downer... but before we had Denver and Pasadena, we had to make the trek across the country every year regardless. Nothing different than in previous years. I do think DCI should have staggard the championships, a year in Indy, a year out of Indy. Otr maybe two years in Indy, one year outside of Indy. That way we have some variety. As for 2014, I know nothing has been decided but I would not be surprised if it was Madison or Denver.
  10. They are urged not too (which I think was one of the reasons for the "Age Out Ceremony" at Semi's, but the they sill do anyway. A few years back in Denver, when I was on the TV crew we picked up shoes, notes, shirts, socks, letters, drum keys, mouth pieces, sticks, drum heads, uniform parts, dot books, underwear (yes, underwear), and a few other items.
  11. What do they need to do: Come out and BLOW OUR FACES OFF!!! I don't care where Madison places as long as they let the horns and drums loose! Weneed some old school Madison with a modern touch. There has to be a way to get a little of both? Myron: I love you man, you are a genious... but leave the SCV drill back in No Cal.
  12. Nope, it will still be there. The Colts have to play somewhere next year....
  13. Here is another example of opinion... I find your signature "art" the most hideious thing I have ever seen. But then again, that is just an opinion. See how that works? :P
  14. Just forget it, we are all losers... with the exception of the Cavi's, Impulse and Academy. I give up. With attitudes like this, no wonder this activity is going in the toilet
  15. Regiment, Cavaliers, and BD are all class acts! Congrats to all three! Nice to see Regiment "break" the rules just a touch to revive a long lost tradition. Sometimes, rules are meant to be broken, and should be ;) Bravo... well done kids!
  16. Glen, IMO, this is what happens when you keep things from others. If you won't explain what you do and how you do it to the general public, most people think there is some sort of conspiracy. As in most things, there is no conspiracy. DCI has a way of doing things, that I am positive can be justified and explained, they just choose to be very general about explaining things. I agree with Nik on this one... open up the judging sheets and explain to us how and why they are doing things. Allow the fans to know more about the judging system. Yes, you open yourself up to more criticism, but you also eleminate the nasty comnspiracy rumors and gain the trust of the fans.
  17. Well, myself and several others included don't care for the Ricky Bobby approach to life "If you're not number one then you're nobody - winning is all that matters". Build them up and tear them down? That doesn't make much sense at all. What do you think Hop told his kids last night? Or how about Pat Siedling? David Gibbs? What would Jeff Fiedler have said had they not won? Do you think they would have told their kids that since they were second, they can't be champions? "you're only second place, and although were proud of you, you didn't win, so we can't call you winners. Better luck next year." If anyone were to have said that to my kids, I would make it my life's work to make sure they didn't have a job the following season. On the grand scheme of things, these kids have accomplished more in one season than most of their peers ever will. They have learned responsibility, achievement, and the rewards of good ole' fashion hard work. That alone makes all of them Champions. So I ask you this, what attitude should we have with kids? As a parent of three boys, I can tell you honestly that if anyone ever pulled the "There is only one champion, you came in second, so get over it" attitude with my kids, they would get a piece of my mind and quiote possibly a little more than that (although, the real damage would come from my wife as she is the pitbull of the family). Accomplishment, effort and achievement should be rewarded, especially in this day and age when most kids would rather have things handed to them and done for them.
  18. Great points and I share your sentiment. One correction, Cascades made finals in 2002, and I believe Blue Stars were finalists in the early DCI years, which doesn't really count in the context of your post but worth mentioning.
  19. Hey Ken, good to see you on the boards. I think you passed me by at the Mt Sac show this year, but by the time I figured out it was you, you were long gone.
  20. Good for them.. they are a class organization with some very bright people at the helm. They will do what is best for their kids and drum corps in general. What ever they decide it will be the right decision. Congrats to Academy on a great show and a great season.
  21. You know what, that's not a bad idea at all! These kids bust there butts all year long, and only a handful of them have any shot at winning. Like a previous poster said, why not just send the other kids home for the summer since its clear that none of them have a legit shot at winning? I mean, based on your logic, that is the PC thing to do, right? Its obvious that you don't get it. The competition aspect is just the gimmick. The real joy is being entertained by these young people and watching them progress throughout the season. The real joy of drum corps is getting hyped about a show, getting goose bumps by clean beats, great drill moves, wonderful brass, awesome guard work, and shows that knock you off of your feet. If you that don't know what drum corps truely is, go back and take a look at what the Madison Alumni did last night. Look at the raw emotion, the tradition, the tears in people's eyes as they heard music from years past. Its about passion, performing, and creating a bond with people who six months earlier were complete strangers. If you don't get that, than I can't help you... no one can. If you think the only thing that matters in drum corps is winning championships, than you just don't get drum corps.
  22. You know, the intention of the thread was for those of us who have marched drum corps to express how proud we are of the "class of 2006". It wasn't about placement, or who the "Championship" winners were. Anyone with half a brain could have figured that out. And my apologies for calling you out, but just as you get annoyed by the "champions try and make you feel good PC comments", I get annoyed by people who aren't intelligent enough to decern the true meaning behind what is being said. You took a perfectly legit post and f'd it up. I don't know why I try here sometimes.
  23. You couldn't be more right, and more wrong, all in the same response. But that's your problem, not mine. Also ran corps? And does it really deminish what the Champion accomplished... for without those other corps, there would be no Champion. You are an ###, and it shows in your post. There were several thousand kids that marched, played, sweat, and put there heart and souls into there work this season, and they are all CHAMPIONS.
