  1. Paula, You dont by any chance have any pics of the Freelancers from '89 do you?
  2. Good God Dave, we really need to get you out of Oildale! b**bs
  3. Its fine to have opinions, but its not always fine to share them if the intent is anything but positive. get a clue!
  4. Dude- You have to be kidding me, right? People DON'T wonder why they win brass or come close becuase that is not part of the criteria for being a great show or a great corps! Take a look at the other posts in this thread and how many peolpe appreciate this show and the work the kids over the summer in 2003. Go back and read the archives about how this show gave almost everyone that saw it goosebumps. IMO there is no place for that kind of negativity in this activity. It might be your opinion, but the Golden Rule should always apply... if you don't have something nice to say... <**>
  5. Ah, the 'ole starter pistol days! Remember when corps used to just let'er rip after the closing pistol sounded!!! Go get'em, Hop!
  6. I have to concur with my good friend from Southern California on this one... this could have been done with a little more tact.
  7. Let me tell you all a little something... This kid had more hype in him than any other drum corps member in the world. We used to tease Scott becuase he was a tiny guy, over hyped, and talked about nothing but the Freelancers. I remember him being the first person up at camp one morning in 1989, sop in hand, ready to go before any of us were even out of bed. "Dude, you need to take a pill". Scott was all drum corps, all the time! Now in my old age, I look back now and know that Scott Stewart was a model Freelancer, and a model drum corps member at that. Miss ya Scott, it was a pleasure marching with you.
  8. The wierd noise is probably a siren from one of the fire trucks at the firestation back behind the stadium.
  9. 1).Yes, indeed, I am the managing editor of Drum Corps Planet. What is God's name does that have to do with me expressing my opinion? This not an editorial, not a column, not a news piece, nothing that represents DCP in the slightest. I was representing my own personal opinion, based on stories I have had heard from Kingsmen Alumni and their parents. I never once said that these were true, just that this is all I have ever heard about the man… period. If someone has a great story to tell about Rocco, by all means, do it! I have nothing personal against the man at all. But based on what I have heard, I would not allow my kids to march if he was the director. As a parent, that is not only my right, but my responsibility. If you are wondering where those comments came from, there you go. 2). If you rally want to know my credentials, I would be happy to supply you with them in private. I am sure you will find my education and professional background as a journalist more than credible. 3). I did not take any offense from your comments, nor was any intended on my part. My personal feeling is that the Kingsmen were a corps that died way too early, and it is my hope that they can rise again and serve the youth of Orange County. I think we all forget sometimes that it’s about the kids, and the experience. As an Orange County resident, I will do what it takes to support this corps, as long as it is done responsibly with the intention of serving the kids and the community first.
  10. As long as Rocco is not involved, then I seethis as being a positive. I dont know if it is true or not, but some of the things I have heard about him make me wonder how DCI put up with him. I am just saying that this is what I have heard... would love to be proven wrong becuase its hard to believe that anyone could be that bad. I have met him once and he was the nicest man in thw world... Anyway, would be good to see the Kingsmen back in their rightful place!
  11. 88 was a great year, except of you were touring in the midwest and the south!!!!! We (Freelancers) were trading paint with Hutch (Sky Ryders), Crossmen, and Dutch Boy all season. All four corps battling to the death for the last finals spot. No one knew who had it until we got to KC. Bit of trivia for you.... Which corps holds the all time high score for a DCI Finals Week Prelim contest? 1989 Freelancers with an 89.9
  12. Hey Chez. It was great to meet you the other night (I was the TV guy standing with Dennis right before the rehearsal with the Marines). Don't sweat it man, it was great, and a treat to see a two-valved g bugle again!
  13. This has to be the REVIEW OF THE YEAR!!!!!! How often do we see an entire paragraph where the reviewer bags himself!!!!! Two thumbs up.... WAY UP!!!! This is a classic read!
  14. Ryan- Isn't it amazing how those little innocent acts that were ok as a teenager, suddenly become a major deal the seciond you become a parent? Since I have boys, I am not too sure I am all that worried about it, and i would still trust my kids marching drum corps over anyhting else in the world. But you can only control them for so long before they are going to find out about "things" on their own. As far as what I did on the bus.... I am sure that Elaine would not be too happy if I published any of it here. But seeing as I am 6'2 and she is about 5'6, there wasn;t too much we could do.... Oh, and we played the game a lot.... you all remember the "GAME", right? "The back of the bus hates the front of the bus and the fromt of the bus hates the back of the bus... but everyone hates BILL!!!!"
  15. Hi ya Kristy! Long time no see!!! How have you been!
  16. I have my own reasons for this, buyt the 1989 Freelancers hornline was pretty dang solid!
  17. Much love and prayers to them. Awful news... We are all thinking fo you.
  18. Hey Gale- I remember sharing a few moments with a alto player in 1988 at a McDonalds somewhere in Ohio following a show one night. Some of the nicest people I had ever met that year were from the Sky Ryders, and had it not been for the fact that we were competing agasint you all for the last spot in finals, I think we would have all had fun together. I look back on the 1988 Sky Ryders as a group that deserved to be in finals, if not for anything but the hard work you put into your show all season (I seem to remember watching an impomtu marching rehearsal during warm-ups at Whitewater before you went on the field that night). Now, I have no idea what happend to the Rainbow (god I hope that wasn't us, although I have heard "rumors" as well), but I think I can tell you about something involving a "note".... ;)

  20. I can give some insight on 1988 and 1989. 1988 was a great year, and what made it great was the fact that no one knew what to expect from us. We didn't have message boards or chat rooms back then, so rumors didn;t run quite as rampant. Wehnwe debuted our show in Glendale in 1988, we were pretty #### dirty. But by the time we got to Colorado, we were beating Sky Ryders, and everyone was talking about us. In fact, we were beating Sky most of the year, and at one point in Texas, made a six point jump in one night and beat them by four points. But in the end I think we had reached our peak a few weeks before finals. We were all proud of our accomplishment, and the vets that year knew that 1989 would be our year. 1989 - We started that season just as CJ described it. The hornline was probably 70% vets, and the expereince paid off. Early rehearsals rocked, and we came out of the gates charging. You could tell from the outset that there was a different attitude among both the staff and the corps. Things were more serious. Our scores were better, work ethic greatly imporved, and desire to be a finalist was huge. That corps bonded more and felt more like a serious drum corps. But the real turning point happend in Dayton Ohio, a couple of weeks before the end of the season. The hornline had peaked, and our scores weren't really going anywhere. I remember John Zimny telling us later that he thought there wasn't anything else he could do with us. But he was wrong... Richie (horn tech) took us out in back of the high school one morning for an unusually early music rehearsal. After he warmed us up, Richie said "its about time we add some volume". We spent the next two hours on impact points, and learning to breath and fill the horns up with more air. Richie, who was usually pretty relaxed, was FREAKIN INTENSE, and pushed the crud out of us. But it worked, and by the end of that small horn block, a new hornline had emerged. When we joined the rest of the corps for production run through's, the staff nearly fell off of the scaffolding. Our guard instructor Greg yelled "Oh my god, we have a F'ing hornline, and it is LOUD!!!!" From that point on our scores improved, and by the time we reached Kansas City, we knew we were in. We scored the highest score in prelims history, placed 8th or 9th in quaters, and ultimately 10th overall on Saturday night. But as CJ said, to appreciate the show, you really had to see us at Semifinals. That was by far our best show of the season. There was more heart in that show than all of our others combined. Marching it felt effortless, things just seemed to fall right into place. Everything was right with the world for those 12 minutes. Anyway, I could go on, but i won't. Those were the best two summers of my life.
  21. God I wish I could march that reunion corps, but I am not a Star Alumn. Would be fin to say that I had a chance to March with Star though... lol. That contra line was just ripe!
  22. I too am not a fan of the new Uni's, and think Cesario should be benned from making uniforms for a year for this one. Plain and simple... Yuck! But gald to hear that the Scouts are doing well.
