  1. Did not like... BD 1999 BD 2003 Cadets 2005 BD 2010 Cadets 2011 BD 2012 BD 2014
  2. Does anyone use this term anymore? I recently went to a showing of the Scouts movie. Got into a conversation with a group of new age-outs and was talking about Scouts' 2012 OTL -- a term I had to explain since they'd never heard it. Evidently, no one uses it anymore? (Clearly, I've lost touch.) So what other drum corps terms aren't used anymore?
  3. I only marched one summer in high school - the summer before my senior year. Even though we had a very good, very competitive high school band, it was apples and oranges. And for whatever reason, I had the presence of mind prior to coming back that it wasn't going to be the same and to not expect it to be. That said, being back from tour was a general let down. Very similar to the feeling I always had coming back from four weeks of summer camp. Everyone at home was less interesting and just didn't "get it" like my summer camp friends.
  4. There have been a sizable number of winter guards who have gone inactive for a number of years and come back strong.
  5. It won't be a show I'll go back and watch, but judging from other posters' comments, it may be a favorite of others. There's about a dozen other BD shows I do go back and watch but nothing since Winged Victory.
  6. Seriously bad poll. Indiana isn't even on the list. Where is DCI? Where is BOA? What state consistently has multiple BOA finalists? Shun.
  7. Wow. After perusing through a handful of top 12 corps' 990s, it's remarkably how much better funded SCV and BD are than pretty much anyone else. 2012 revenues were $3.7M for BD and $3.9M for SCV. Net assets were $1.9M for BD and $2.9 for SCV. These are very stable organizations.
  8. 1983 Vanguard - Giannini 1984 Vanguard - Fanfare and Allegro 1986 Blue Devils - Happy Days are Here Again 2008 Phantom - Sparticus 2014 Bluecoats - Tilt 1987 Vanguard - Russian Christmas Music 1992 Cavaliers - Gavorkna 1991 Star of Indiana - Roman Images 2004 Cavaliers - 007 1996 Blue Devils - Club Blue
  9. I had no idea this was a thing in drum corps. This is the first marcher-perspective video I've seen. It's been a long time since I marched, but it viscerally took me back to being on the field. I'd kind of forgotten what it's like to march a show. it was fun to relive that feeling.
  10. Can someone steer me to an explanation of judging? It occurred to me last night that I don't know the difference between GE 1 and 2. Thanks!
  11. I don't know whether BD's philosophy is win-at-any-cost, but I do think they are very surgical about constructing shows that will position the corps to optimize points. And I know I haven't found their shows consistently entertaining since the '90s. More interesting to me was the much discussed guard feature in "Be Italian." This was my first viewing. Holy freaking cow. I was at the theater tonight with a friend who's a former Laker girl. She was like...wow, we never did anything nearly that bawdy. THAT...my friends...is saying a lot. My reaction was...if any of either of my girls wanted to be in that guard...the answer would be heeeeell no. I don't have any over-18 kids yet..but even when they're adults, I don't imagine providing $$ to do that.
  12. Too funny. I pulled Google Maps up on my MacBook, and it's a totally different shot of LOS. I was like, "You all are a bunch of lying liars who lie." Then, it dawned on my to try my PC. Sure enough, Google Maps comes up with a totally different shot, and there's all the pits and guards and archs.
  13. I've never written a "back when I marched" post before, but there's a first time for everything. : ) When I marched, there was so much more movement in placements. I've wondered over the last few years if current marchers get bored. After mid-season, there's so little movement.
  14. And don't forget his Amway franchise. It's network marketing, not a pyramid scheme!!!
  15. Ditka with two valve bugles, no electronics, no narration and 128 members would beat all champion corps from from 1996 - 2013 combined, except 1999 SCV, which would still lose to Ditka but only by the very respectable margin of 1 million points.
  16. Well geez. I was considering chiming in, but I don't see the point since you know this activity and all.
  17. Neither Cadets nor SCV have been guilty of shying away from innovation over the long haul. It's silly to even suggest otherwise. I have no problem with either doing an old favorite occasionally. I kind of like it, in fact. BTW, crazy as it may seem, I don't tire of Alvin Ailey doing "Revelations" over and over either.
  18. Objectively, I think there is no better or worse. Myself, I especially respect people who commit to one organization and see it through over the long haul. I'm not sure we're better off as a whole or individually when we promote what-have-you-done-for-me-lately values and motives. That said, I do also respect people who want to move to Div I corps after having marched II or III.
  19. 8. Star '93. Oh wait... Maybe we've gotten over that one, which actually has to give some hope that we will eventually get over 1 - 7.
  20. Were you being ironic...quoting esoteric psych theory and speaking of others' arrogance in one post?
