  1. Some more nicknames - Snowball! More to come… Puppet
  2. I always thought those guys were off the hook. They were like a separate musical instrument. tuning, playing, retuning playing - they even played on each other's drums - I really believed that Eric was the only drum instructor of the time who understood what tympani were for and how to write for them. Always liked this night shot from 1972: Also no legs - Pre DCI everybody marched the whole show! You know?! Puppet
  3. I love you guys - short story could be long> but… After ten long years of being single again, I was walking out of a client meeting in downtown Miami and across the street were three women. I look at them closely and one turned and saw me. Her name is Sydney and we had dated when we were 15/16. We'd both gone to Music & Art High School in NYC. Time passed and when I got back from 'Nam she was married. So I got married. 30 some odd years later we're both single again and dating again - it is so great and I Love being in Love again. Anyway it's mushy but there ya go! this will be the only Non Drum Corps photo I will post. Thank you. Puppet
  4. The Audobon Bon Bons + Ontario Bandettes = Band O Bon Bons Argonne Rebels + St Catherine's Queensmen = Catherine Of Argonne Ontario Northwind + Baltimore Southwind + Miami Rebels = Miami Hurricane Puppet
  5. Well, for some, the 1974 season was not to be: An excerpt from the Brassmen 1974 web page: It was the end of the '73 drum corps season, going into the '74 season. After two consecutive years of being the bridesmaid at the World Open… after being evicted by two parishes in the Brooklyn Diocese… after losing a large portion of our personnel from Connecticut… after being dragged further out on Long Island for another shot at recruiting to fill the ranks and bring the Brassmen back once again from the brink, this time it was not going to happen. The last horn/drum rehearsal never started. It was an autumn night at a school that was located in Malverne, a town on Long Island. We had about 15 horns, maybe 10 drummers, and five in the guard. With tears in his eyes, Carman Cluna announced that he was "pulling the plug,” and walked out of the music room. Hy Dreitzer and the rest of us were silent. Left unsaid… That we were a #### fine organization that came from nowhere burned hot and fast and extinguished with three words. I'm crying even now as I write this. Puppet
  6. Don't know which is worse. I was married for 24 years! Then one morning I woke up next to a complete stranger. What the heck?! Puppet
  7. What's even more interesting to me is that during that time we were so insulated from most things political. I look back at all the stuff that was going on during the late sixties and early seventies when we were marching our butts off. Think about it, the only time we as the incredible diverse group that we were, were even visited with any kind of racism was during a stay over in Jacksonville Florida on our way to the CYO Nationals in Miami* and Father Schiraldi managed to keep that from most of us. An amazing time to say the least. And let us not forget about the Woodstock! show. Puppet * Oh yeah, remember that woman in the Howard Johnson's in Ohio who said to Konga (Raymond): "I've never seen a colored person in person before!" LOL!!!!!
  8. But, you know that at one time it was. Archives? Legacy? check out… http://www.fleetwoodsounds.com/ The history is still alive. Puppet
  9. The single most exciting show I ever saw included the entire field of drum corps on the field that 18th day of August of 1965 indoors at McCormick Place in Chicago - VFW Nationals - Wow, Wow, Wow! Royal Airs, Chicago Cavaliers, Troopers, Des Plaines Vanguard, Boston Crusaders, Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights, St. Joseph's of Batavia, Garfield Cadets, Skokie Imperials, Saint Kevin's Emerald Knights and there were more like a young Madison Scouts! If you can find a recording of that show - you will be floored! Unbelievable sound for the time! The show of shows - no doubt in my mind. Puppet
  10. And their drum line was awesome that year! Snares! Yikes! Puppet
  11. Oh yeah, from the Evening With The Corps shows in Newark to Madison Square Garden's Felt Forum, the Dream, U.S. Open, CYO Nationals and everything in between one thing, one person was a constant… Moe Knox and his camera!
  12. You're absolutely right. That's why we Brassmen alum went all out in our campaign for not only Mr. Knox's nomination but induction. The least we can do for a man who always managed to capture all of us at our best. Puppet
  13. I don't know what you've got going on but you might want to reach out to Moe Knox, the famous Drum Corps New photographer. In the middle of this, I goggled Sky Ryders and found the web site but there are no pics past 1984 or so. Sorry - hope it works out. Puppet
  14. Ok. Back to the nicknames! I've been searching for a better shot of this girl in the guard for a while The only girl with hair bigger than mine! LOL Puppet
  15. Snare drummers, first sopranos and Contra players. But then we got Mellophones! Instant stardom! But in reality, we never picked the girl, they picked us! Puppet
  16. Nothing fancy - just focused. I loved those uniforms! Puppet
  17. And then a friend of mine sent me a bunch like this one from a night show. These aren't the best shots, but… Check out the stick positions of the drummers! On the field 1965. Puppet
  18. There's something wrong with women in cars? Look me in the eye and say that. Puppet
  19. Virtually every living member of the St. Rita's Brassmen was included in our mass nomination. If you would like to add me to your list. Just send me a copy and I will join your effort as well. Puppet
  20. I also sent my letter of nomination for Moe. I can't say enough how much Mr. Knox has contributed to the world of Drum Corps. Please join in. Thank you. Puppet
  21. I found this stashed away. 1964 World's Fair. I saw for the first time the Casper Troopers and other great Drum Corps of the time that year. And this is a shot taken in the Youth Center. We were really a tiny Corps when you think about it. Puppet
  22. As I said in another post, if I had had a brain in my head, this was the girl I should have married! A member of the Guard. Joan. Puppet
  23. Hey it looks like the smaller folks were on top! That's too easy. Of course we also took time to look at our cars! This one's our Drum Major's '69 Dodge Dart. Please note that the guard girls stood alike even when they weren't marching. Ha! Puppet
