  1. It seems Surf had a good run! I have my fingers crossed they "hold their own!"
  2. $2500 is consistent with other groups. Spirit Drum & Bugle Corps (soon to be back in Atlanta) has $2100 for tuition, an $80 one-time audition fee and then a $75 dollar fee for each camp Cumulatively that puts Teal in the same "ball park."
  3. What was really exciting about following Open Class this year was all of the "switching off" on the "leader board." With the exception of the BDB and SVC, some of it was anybody's game. Looking at the recaps, Revolution actually took 2nd in percussion with Capital Regiment and Oregon Crusaders taking 3rd and 4th in brass respectively. Also, at least one judge had Teal in 3rd for music. Add in Citations taking 1st in guard and you really get a sense that this was quite the contest. Congratulations to all of these peaceful warriors in OC!
  4. Kevin, Thanks for performing this service - it is a nice way to help us all feel a bit more connected to the event!
  5. VK in their finals and Troopers back in finals to - excellent!
  6. First off - I think we're just looking at a very mediocre journalist. So the article is written by the "third string." <laugh> As far as the Citations - there is a strong foundation relating to both the marching program and the guard program from their area. There are many people from both Boston and 27th Lancers that have gone on to teach people whom have taught other people, etc. The New England area is also the land of Peggy Twiggs and Georg Zingali both whom left a legacy of very well taught people who have passed it down. Citations clearly understand the value of a good basic block and how to relate that block to the technique they use in their show. A strong marching program often translates to an increased sense of pulse which, in turn, enhances ensemble. Teal is doing something right or they would not be in the top 5!
  7. I am just "tuning into" the show on the DCI fan network.
  8. I am a U. S. Marine veteran - we're one of the oldest active Corps I know!
  9. Well done - whomever "stepped up to the plate" it is a thing of greatness you do.....
  10. What a great opportunity for VK to gain public recognition! Now get that Mayor on your side and get him to say something positive and quotable about VK so that you can use it when you seek sponsors!
  11. Good stuff. I remember seeing Revolution (whom I had never heard of....) two years ago when my daughter was with Teal Sound and I was volunteering on tour. After their show I mentioned to others that I thought they were a group to "keep an eye on" - of course since I am partial to percussion (my gig) I had especially noticed that I thought their percussion program was very solid. I am glad to hear Revolution is continuing their momentum!
  12. Your "random" question brings up interesting possibilities. You caused me to think about the "Foley Pit" concept that began back during the old radio shows when they had to have all of their sound effects done by a "Foley Artist". Now movies use that concept and even though much of it is digital, for customized sounds in fight-scenes and such, they still use Foley Artists. Reference link: Foley Sounds
  13. I saw the new uniforms in Jackson - I thought they looked great! Now - I am not sure if the drum major's outfit would get him behind the "Velvet Rope" (sorry Bobby) even though I am sure his dazzling smile will help! David V.
  14. I like the uniform a lot in the picture. I am looking forward to seeing the "look" in motion at the Jackson, NJ show!
  15. OK, in the championship performance by the Oakland-Etobicoke (spelling?) Raiders in 1976, there is this kind of "airy sound" (very distinctive) in the drum solo. I never could figure out what it was or find anyone that knew.
  16. Amidst all of the hype surrounding the passing of Michael Jackson, I suddenly remembered a performance of "Billy Jean" done by the Boston Crusaders. I am remembering this correctly - or was it some other drum corps? What other drum corps have performed any Michael Jackson tunes? Surely someone has done Thriller. David 27
  17. I think it would be really cool for a guard to spin rocket-propelled grenade launchers (RPG's), but the extra insurance rider that would be required would probably bankrupt that corps. Once again innovation squelched by finances! David
  18. You know, that could be the case - regardless this is indication of a strong start. It is often natural that, as the "frame of reference" becomes more clearly and richly defined, the additional gradients impose limiting factors on evaluation.
  19. I just saw the uniforms the Madison Scouts are fielding this year. Considering the image the Scouts have developed over the years - I just can't "get past" the uniforms. In marketing terms, this seems to run counter to their "branding." It reminds me of "New Coke." New Coke is what led to the reinstatement of "Coke Classic."
