  1. Neither. Key of G is the way to go. This goes for all marching brass, IMHO. Bb instruments sound tinny outdoors to me, and I don't care at all for the timbre.
  2. I'd switch to French Horn and cut right to the chase. Happy Holidays!
  3. But the Blue Devils actually have "A Commitment to Excellence", unlike the Raiders. LOL.
  4. Came close a couple of times. Usually it was more of a treadmill type action, a la the Three Stooges. Worse yet, you'd have fallen forward and slid on your stomach. That would have been nasty!
  5. When I was in corps back in Kansas City, we marched the American Royal Parade. LOTSA livestock in that one - it's pretty difficult marching up a steep hill in the rain with "meadow muffins" all over the street...
  6. Ron Menke and Rick Odello, circa 1977. That's some major helmet hair going on there, Rick!....
  7. The arch-rivals of the White Stallions, the Black Stallions! Since we never had an actual horse, I'd have preferred marching in front - not behind them, if you know what I mean... <g>
  8. Fan-frickin-tastic! Kudos to Lee for the photos. I was meaning to track some down but haven't had time to scan. Perhaps on the weekend. These bring back a lot of memories, for sure. You still in the bay area? [reply privately so we don't get off topic too far - thanks]
  9. I'll bet you're right about that. My recollection was that they scrapped the show very quickly after that first trip. Too bad the pictures didn't pick up the disco ball hovering above the field... :-)
  10. I kinda liked the "disco show". Their version of "Mahogany" was nicely done.
  11. Yeah, the Fu Manchu was popular back then. Mel Stratton had one, and I think Mike even wore one for a short while. Ron Menke and Steve Chorazy also had Fu's from my recollection. We were just ###### back then, you know what I mean? I don't think Jerry would have looked right with a Fu - he did sport a moustache for a while and it never did look quite right on him.
  12. No mullets in the corps at that time. Prodigious amounts of long hair, yes - especially the staff. In particular, Mike Moxley had a rather impressive mane going on, from my recollection.
  13. Scott Johnson is fifth from the left. One of the all-time great snare lines, for sure.
  14. I'd go with "If" by Bread (like anyone would remember that group these days) by the Purple Lancers, 1974...
  15. Pittsfield, MA Atwater, CA (the "Hickdome") Alton, IL (I think it was Alton, baseball stadium with field that was too short from sideline to sideline) Sevierville, TN (Loved the class pictures with Dolly Parton in the school's front hall, though) Orange Bowl, Miami, FL Silverdome, Pontiac, MI (gotta love that echo...) Huntington, WV
  16. "Back in the day" (1970's) we BD had four buses, 3 "4103" models and 1 "4104" - Hound - Basically a horn bus, but had to be voted in Funliner - Drum Bus Salty "04" We were able to go to three buses when we got bigger models...
  17. I couldn't agree with you more. Luckily, back when I was judging winter guard here on the West Coast, there wasn't much confrontation or effort to influence by the units' instructors. Most of the time there was back and forth regarding intent and broad-brush concepts, which I found to be rather helpful in the development of many guards AND instructors. However, I do recall one critique in which I did VA and had a rather prominent show designer get in my face as to why I didn't place their group in "box 5" at the FIRST SHOW OF THE SEASON. I understand competitiveness, but the plain fact was that the group, while full of talent and potential, was not at that level just yet. I'm glad this was a very rare occurrence in my days judging, but situations like that could be commonplace in other disciplines such as figure skating. Drum corps wasn't too bad that way either, but some of the better staffs would either ignore or patronize you if they didn't like the results. Passive aggressive, no doubt - but certainly preferable to someone "in your face".
  18. Yeah, some "big hitters"... Always loved tapes from "Bernard Baggs, B-A-G-G-S". Classic.
  19. Speaking of Sandi, does anyone know her whereabouts? I recall her and Merc moving away to the east coast a few years back.
  20. ...and 80's too. We stayed there in both 82 and 83 when I was working with the VK. I recall it was only a short walk to the Black Forest Inn, a really good German restaurant. Killer strudel!
